I have studied so many styles of playing, played in bands professionally throughout the country, and can teach you to play with amazing technique so you don’t injure yourself!

I will guide you through the process of practice, learning by ear, or learning sheet music. I have a classical background so can work with classical players who want to learn fiddling.

My linguistics background really helps me with understanding how we learn fiddle tunes, how to get a fiddle “accent”, looking at the elements that makes one style different from another, etc.

I’ve taught 40+ students a week for the past 20 years, won numerous competitions, and performed on the BBC Alba and other venues.

About Amy

I am the great-granddaughter of a musician who used to play with Ella Fitzgerald and Benny Goodman in NYC in the 1930s and 40s! I believe every person has the right to be musically fluent, and to have music available to them as a tool for self expression, emotional expression, stress relief, and

Lynn gets down to basics from the get-go. Starting with tuning and the correct way to hold the banjo, she progresses to proper finger positions and chord structure from fret to fret. By the way, she's also very personable, and seems to enjoy a laugh from time to time.

I am a fiddler and vocalist for internationally-touring and award-winning folk groups, Tullamore and Brackish Water Jamboree. In addition to my performance schedule, I am also honored to play first violin for the Hampton Roads Philharmonic. I run a thriving online teaching studio, which has been kicking since 2003, after earning my degree in violin performance from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Students describe me as patient, fun, and encouraging! As your teacher, you can expect me to work with you from where you are, and with subjects and curriculum that match what you are interested in learning. I teach traditional classical, using either Suzuki or Essential Elements, depending on your learning and self-motivational needs, and I also teach fiddle music, including Celtic, old-time, bluegrass, and alternative styles. *Please check my availability before signing up, as my time slots are quickly filling up!* I look forward to meeting you! What's the Difference Between the Violin and Fiddle?

Is that a fiddle... or a violin? It's a common question, and one that baffles many beginner musicians. So what's the answer? When it comes to the actual instrument, there actually aren't any differences. What distinguishes a violin from a fiddle is what kind of music you're playing with it.
