About Andrew
I've been studying music for 10 years now. Having come to music later in life than most, I find that I am more empathetic to the perspective of the beginning student than many teachers. I spent the Summer of 2009 teaching music fundamentals to groups of severely physically and mentally disabled children of all ages. Since then I've completed my Bachelors degree in Music, taught privately and with several established music schools.

To me, music is above all about transformation. Beautiful sound transforms our experience of the environment, and learning an instrument can help students approach life as one big instrument they need to practice to master.
Learning to play an instrument is also an experience of training one’s nervous system to gradually act and respond in new ways, and that kind of persistent, focused
, training is applicable to any new skill.
Last and definitely not least, playing music is fun.

*** Lesson Details ***

I plan my lessons around getting students to enjoy playing music as soon as possible, whether that means learning how to strum a chord rhythmically, playing their favorite song, or how to take a blues solo.
There are steps that have to be climbed to do more complex things and I encourage students to practice a little every day rather than for a long time once or twice a week. Developing a love of music and steady practice habits are more beneficial over the long term than practicing until your limit.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I currently have a living room space where I can teach, but it's small so it might be preferable to travel to you.

*** Travel Equipment ***
If necessary I can provide amplification, cables, and a microphone.

*** Specialties ***
Jazz, Folk, Blues, Rock, Hip-hop, Funk, Reggae.

As an educator, Matt is different from other teachers in his ability to inspire and motivate. Learning to play and master an instrument is challenging and can be a very frustrating experience. Matthew has techniques proven student after student to be successful in overcoming learning obstacles so that the student is able to meet his/her individualized goals. Lessons are provided in a private studio in Astoria, NY or your home. Once, a location is established I work with each student to identify his or her goals and objectives both musically and personally. Students are assessed to determine where their individual ability is at the time of assessment. From there, I work in partnership with the student as we begin mastering the guitar or the piano in a fun and supportive environment. Whether you are interested in learning to play the blues, classical or jazz guitar or any other genre or just learning how to play songs on the piano, I can help. If you are a beginner, don't worry it won't all be scales. In fact I guarantee you will be playing a song within your first lesson. If you are an advanced or intermediate student, I can help you master your skills. We (you and I) will revisit proper right and left hand techniques; utilize exercises to improve your speed and accuracy. You will learn new methods to strengthen your improvisation abilities. In short, you and I will make sure to build on your strengths and undo any bad habits that are hindering your ability to grow as a guitarist or pianist.

*** Specialties ***

I begin with meeting the student where they are in relation to their musical experience. After establishing trust, through encouragement I empower students to recognize their potential with out pre-determined expectations or limits. I am comfortable in various genres from classical to punk.

I've taken private music lessons for the past 15 years with world class musicians, among them David Weber and Howard Hirsch. I usually use either the Alfred or Rubank method books to supplement a curriculum that I tailor make for each individual student. Any question or confusion a student has about anything during the lesson will be explained in detail and dealt with until he/she understands the concept. Started working with Marjorie on a whim. It turned out to be one of the best spur of the moment decisions I've ever made. To start off, I had absolutely no background in singing. I do a lot of public speaking so wanted to work on my enunciation. So I decided to go the extreme and learn to sing. If you can sing in front of people, you have no problem enunciating.

Marjorie has a wide range of students, from beginners to advanced. One thing you can be certain about her is that she has a passion for teaching and loves teaching beginners. The commitment to help you improve is there. In my opinion, that is what you want in a teacher. I have the utmost confidence in recommending Marjorie to someone who is looking for a teacher.

Marjorie is a delight. From the moment I walked in she had a smile on her face and I felt very welcome. From just one lesson she showed me techniques that extremely enhanced my voice with no pressure on the throat. I had not really sung for ten years and I felt like my voice is still there. It made me very happy. I am using the techniques daily until our next appointment. I highly recommend her!

About Alessandro
From the age of 6, I received lessons in piano and music theory / ear training at the Brooklyn College Preparatory Center for the Performing Arts.  In the early 1990's, hearing legendary musicians on former radio station 104 WNCN made an indelible impression on me and inspired a long-term passion.  My sensibility for jazz and popular music also developed during this period, since 101.9, the "smooth jazz" station, was also listened to at home.  I accompanied the Stuyvesant High School choir until my graduation in 2000.   In January of that year, I performed the third movement of Sergei Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto with the school's symphony orchestra.  The then-president of the Stuyvesant Parents Association praised the "extraordinary performance" in an issue of the PA newsletter.  Starting in August 2000, I attended Columbia Univer
sity where I continued my piano lessons as a student in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.  Wishing to fully commit myself to music through the piano, I transferred to Manhattan School of Music in September 2002. There, I studied classical piano performance with Donn-Alexander Feder (interesting name, no?) and Arkady Aronov.

I have taught beginner and intermediate level private piano lessons to adults and children since January 2009.  Throughout January 2010, I accompanied a student production of the musical _You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown_ at The Women's Leadership School of Astoria, Queens.   In May of that year, I worked with Jermaine Lewis on a concert of his musical, _Spiritual Heritage_, staged at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, Bronx.  These collaborations developed my feel for popular music (including improvisation,) which I enjoy conveying to students who prefer to learn piano through that style.  My appreciation of contemporary music has also benefited through my activities as music transcriber (someone who notates music on paper or computer by ear) for the lead singer of 3D2, a contemporary pop group that has performed at Madison Square Garden as well as international venues.

*** Lesson Details ***
I adapt my teaching to how you learn and your aspirations, whether the direct goal is to delve into the world of piano playing, an art that nurtures emotional awareness and self-discipline, channel your favorite artists from the keys, or learn to listen inwardly - to your own music. I am a patient teacher who believes that you can succeed when the instructor is passionate about the subject (I am!) New musical and technical concepts are best introduced when you are ready to understand them.  Moreover, music and technique are two integrated aspects of the same picture - even when practicing a passage to develop efficiency of the physical gesture required, music is still being created!

Once I have gauged the development of your playing (from absolute beginner to anything beyond,) we would work on pieces and techniques that gradually take you to the next "stage of development."  I use quotation marks because musical growth is really a continuous process with no actual discreet stages. "Level" is merely an idea that helps teachers hone the content and delivery of their instruction.  In addition, I am flexible when it comes to following the sequence of pieces in repertoire guides.  In the order they appear, they don't always support the student's growth.  Lessons include theory concepts as a way to aid your aural understanding.  I can locate pieces of your choosing, and, if helpful, teach them in a more manageable (but still musically interesting) format.  Learning preferred music by ear is also a possibility.

I encourage regular practicing each week, while helping you strive for a balance between reviewing what was covered from one lesson to the next and your other important commitments.  In this manner, I hope to respect both the lesson time and you as a whole person.

*** Studio Equipment ***

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would provide music lesson books, other sheet music, recommendations for sheet music purchase. I would expect my student to provide a piano or digital keyboard with touch-induced volume control.

*** Specialties ***
I am actively experienced guiding beginner level to late intermediate students. I will guide you through the most sensible steps (for you) to cultivate agility at the piano, your ear and its discerning power, and unblocked musical expression. Connecting to your passion is one of the keys to a healthy and low-pressure learning experience. Our educational system would be better off if more practitioners of the art of teaching knew how to respond to the way our brains and minds learn naturally and efficiently - not by negative stress, like anxiety over the quality of a result, but through kind encouragement, patience, and the opportunity for open communication between student and teacher.

In teaching and performance, I have absorbed styles from classical, popular, and Broadway music. A vast repertoire is available for students at various places in their development. My interest in improvisation, and an ear sensitive to nuance have enhanced my feel for pop styles. I love music with a message that begs to be encountered, uplifting or not so uplifting - as long as it expresses anything essential from the heart of our common humanity. My experience as a teacher and pianist has shown me the scope of music that fits this description, covering at least jazz, classical, contemporary pop, r&b, and world music. For example, a current student worked with me on _Sweet Dreams_ by Beyonce, and _Together Again_ by Jackson, both which imparted looseness and rhythmic discernment to his playing. I've alternated our exploration of Top-40 songs with Bach 4-part chorales, which build his sense of fingering and harmonic motion.

Alessandro is a great teacher and very thorough. He sincerely loves music and is very well rounded in his appreciation. He is not only a master pianist, but also a vocal coach and well versed organist. I myself went to four years of music school and can still learn so much from this Manhattan school of music alumni. I play live constantly and I use Alessandro to fine my set and craft. I plan on studying with Alessandro for many years to come. Highly recommended. Specifically i asked him to help with fingering, which he has a masters approach along with sight reading and rhythm.

A wonderful, knowledgeable and above all patient teacher

I would wholeheartedly recommend Alessandro to any adult beginner student like myself without a doubt. He is so patient with his students, some times I think I would have killed myself if I were the teacher with all the mistakes and the lack of preparation but he is always encouraging, coming up with practice advise and tips and tricks that only the masters know. He is very knowledgeable, me being a physicist always throwing at him all shorts of odd questions about the structure of music and he always has good answers. Most teachers rarely know these details and they don't care to spend the time researching but due to his years of musical studies he knows it all. He is also very flexible, during our lessons my interest has shifted from pure piano lessons to music theory and the study of harmony. Alessandro devised a study plan and he prepared lectures starting from scratch. He is very polite and accommodating to my demanding schedule and that has worked great for me. I really recommend Alessandro to any adults who want to start learning music, it is never too late, trust me, as long as you choose the right teacher!

About Matthew
I have been playing professionally for over 30 years and have taught for over 10. I am proficient on keyboards, guitar, bass, ukelele, as well as lead and harmony vocals and songwriting. My focus is on developing your musical intuition through ear training, and accessing the music within. I have a home recording studio to help with the learning process. I provide a fun, safe, non-critical environment where you can access your inner musician in the most enjoyable way possible.

Many of my students have gone onto become prolific songwriters and musicians and have recorded albums. Even beginners can learn quickly from my method which emphasizes techniques for keeping learning music fun.

My 10th CD was released last year on Sojourn Records and was featured as NPR song of the day. Over the years my music has received much critical accl
aim as I have continued to tour the world. I have opened for legends such as David Bowie, Ron Sexsmith, Robyn Hitchcock, Morphine, Bob Mould, Freedy Johnston, among many others. I have produced over a dozen albums by other artists and songwriters, and composed for major motion pictures including last years film, WON’T BACK DOWN starring Maggie Gyllenhaal.

“In a career spanning more than 20 years, he has established himself as one of America's great under-the-radar songwriters. Had he emerged five decades back, he might have been a Tin Pan Alley stalwart, turning out intelligent, accessible songwriting with the clockwork genius of and Gary Goffin. His work is rife with the clever, incisive tunefulness that marked that era.”-- National Public Radio

Students can expect to discover or re-discover their love for music and and their own natural musical inclinations. Many students report an increased sense of joy and possibility in their own lives. Curriculum depends on level of student, but is focused on being able to play favorite songs, develop comfort and ease in playing style, and accessing creativity and originality in approach. After 3 to 6 months working with me, most students can feel comfortable calling themselves a musician!

*** Specialties ***
I teach mainly guitar, keyboards, ukelele, and voice from beginning up to intermediate. I try to incorporate songwriting into the process as i find that it speeds up the process and helps to encourage enthusiasm and a more focused effort and better results. I am fluent in most styles but come from a folk, rock, country, pop background. I also have a home studio and use recording techniques to develop style and vocal ability.

Max is the most amazing teacher I’ve ever met. And I teach for a living. I am 45 years old. I got piano lessons when I was an elementary and junior high school student for approximately 4 years. Although I liked playing piano, I’d thought that I didn’t have enough talent, in terms of technical skill and emotional expression. In my first lesson, Max taught me how to use my wrist and elbow to make lighter sounds, as well as how to practice in a certain way in order to produce crystal clear sounds for trills and in faster parts, by making a proper space between notes. I never before understood these points and others, despite teaching by others. More importantly, he helped me to be confident in expressing my emotion in my playing. I realized that practicing piano is such a delightful process to be connected to my life memories and to liberate all my emotion attached to them. This is like a therapeutic process. His teaching makes my life more artistic and meaningful. I really appreciate his deep passion for teaching. It is clearly his mission. He is a true teacher, who wants to help people grow as artists in their own right. I just wish that I met him earlier. But I am glad that it is not late for me.

Experienced teacher, musical director, composer, and accompanist (currently working at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts New Studio on Broadway). I believe that a slow detailed approach to learning anything is vital to its success. Many people will tell you that they can have you playing your favorite song in one lesson but what I offer instead of a "one hit wonder" is a foundation in technique, theory, and musicianship that allows my students to excel and surpass the "one hit wonder." All ages are welcome! I specialize in the beginner and intermediate student. Can't wait to begin this musical journey with you.

About Andrew
Born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska I have played the piano since the age of 4. My parents used to tell me that I could stop and start whatever activities I wanted to whether that be playing baseball or participating in karate. The only thing I was not allowed to quit was playing the piano. At first I was not very good, I was not some musical prodigy, in fact some might say I was bad. I didn't like to practice, I just wanted to be able to play. Unfortunately that's not how learning an instrument works. It was not until middle school that I began to appreciate that my parents had made me play the piano because after 6 years I started to improve. This of course was because I started to enjoy what I was doing, and I started practicing more and more. Eventually I made my way to becoming a singer and a composer but that's a whole other story.
I graduated from New York University Tisch School of the Arts with a degree in Musical Theater. While there I was exposed to all different genres and became a respected vocal coach amongst my peers and alumni. I also successfully music directed several shows both at NYU and a children's theater in upstate New York. It is a gift like no other to be able to play any instrument and I am overjoyed to share that gift with all of my students past, present, and future.

Piano is a great instrument to learn and improve, whether you are just starting out, or enhancing your skills. Kids and adults learn how to play well, grow musicianship skills, and explore a variety of musical styles. Interested students are invited to participate in recitals and community outreach events. For the aspiring musician, preparation for auditions, performances and college applications is provided. For those interested in songwriting and composition, keyboard skills and music theory are interwoven into the training.
About me: I have been playing piano since age 6, and by age 12, I was playing for choirs at school. I have been a music director/pianist/keyboards for musical theatre productions, choirs, baroque operas, and more. I am a composer, songwriter, singer, and harpist. I am on the Roster of the CT Commission on Culture and Tourism, and a prize-winning graduate of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Many references available.
