About Rachel
A student of Yumi Hwang-Williams, Sally O'Reilly, Joey Corpus, and Mark Lakirovich, Rachel holds a Diploma in violin from Denver School of the Arts and furthered her studies in violin and viola performance at the University of Denver and the Longy School of Music of Bard College. She has played under the direction of noted conductors David Zinman, Julius Rudel, and Michael Stern at the Aspen Music Festival, James DePriest at the Las Vegas Music Festival, and, most recently, Benjamin Zander of the Boston Philharmonic. She has performed by invitation at Music on the Rhine in Dusseldorf, Germany, Aspen Music Festival, Las Vegas Music Festival, and on tour with members of the Minnesota Orchestra and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.

Currently, Rachel performs with the Prometheus Chamber Orchestra, a self-conducted ensemble based in Philadelphia
, and with the classical and traditional duo Driftwood. Her repertoire also reaches beyond classical music, with recent projects including performances of jazz and traditional fiddle styles throughout the Boston area, and recordings with Ran Blake, the founding chair of New England Conservatory's Department of Contemporary Improvisation, on a CD released in 2012. In addition to her work as a performer, Rachel runs an active studio and specializes in teaching both conventional and Suzuki violin method as well as beginning and intermediate fiddle.

*** Lesson Details ***
I like to teach students using a combination of Traditional method books as well as Suzuki. I believe that it's equally important for students to be able to play music by ear as it is to be able to sight-read off of a score. In a typical lesson, we will cover scales, exercises in technique, etudes, and a movement of a classical piece. I also like to play duets with students as I believe it helps improve the ear and acclimate a student for playing in group or orchestral settings.
I encourage all students to bring a notebook with them to every lesson and will write down what is being worked on and the areas of improvement. I've found that it's vastly helpful to be able to go back and look at what was covered in a lesson when you're at home practicing!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Studio is in a private room, neat, organized, with plenty of instruments. She has a music stand, extra equipment, instruments, and seating for parents.

*** Travel Equipment ***
If a student lives in a reasonably subway/bus accessible area then I have no problem traveling to them for lessons.

*** Specialties ***
Classical, Fiddle, Violin, Viola

Very good instructor

Rachel is a warm and inviting person, and she made me feel very welcome on my first visit. She definitley does get right down to business in lessons. I am an older student and have never played violin before, so I thought I might struggle to learn. The opposite seems true. Rachel spent the first couple of sessions perfecting my posture and bow holds. We moved on to playing rhythms and reading sheet music, shortly after. I've only been practicing once a week for 2 months, and I can already play simple sheet music! That's huge for me! Rachel's instruction is clear and patient, and she's very easy-going. She also has a good sense of humor and a great way of phrasing things so that it's simple to understand her.

The only thing that can be difficult sometimes is getting a hold of her by phone or email. Sometimes she takes a bit to respond, she always does eventually catch up with me, though. Overall, I'm pleased with my lessons.

I’m an adult viola student which is kind of different for me. I started playing again after a couple years and I’m trying to learn ways to play with other musicians. Emily has been really good with helping me focus on what I want to learn. She is patient with me and also plays with me and makes me feel comfortable in my lesson. afterwards I feel good and positive and I want to play more! I suggest her for anyone trying to be creative and wants to improve on tempo, rythm, tone etc. she’s good.

Experienced violin/viola teacher of 8 years available for students of all ages and levels! I have a bachelor's degree in Violin Performance from Butler University, and I also have a master's degree in Violin Performance from the University of Oklahoma. I believe every student is different and therefore do not teach one method, but a mix and match of different methods tailored to each student. Depending on the level of the student, I use the following method books: Essential Elements, Suzuki, Solos for Advanced Violinists, and standard repertoire and pop music. I also believe that an understanding of music theory is essential for all violinists and violists, so some of my teaching is devoted to theory.

About Kari
Kari Krafft is a classically trained violinist who performs and teaches in the Los Angeles area. She currently serves on the faculties of Bertrand’s School of Music in Pasadena and Cornerstone Music Conservatory in West LA as well as coaching chamber music with the Santa Clarita Youth Orchestra. Kari holds a Master’s in Violin Performance from the University of Oklahoma and a Bachelor’s in Violin Performance from Butler University. Her main teachers include Mr. Hal Grossman, Dr. Gregory Lee, and Mr. Larry Shapiro.

While pursuing her degrees, Kari developed a passion for music education. She is dedicated to providing quality and personalized instruction to all of her students. She uses method books such as Essential Elements and Suzuki as well as standard etudes and repertoire. Kari has experience teaching violin and viola to students o
f all ages and levels. She has held teaching positions with several music organizations, including the Sooner Strings Project at the University of Oklahoma, El Sistema Oklahoma, Norman Music Institute, and the Butler Community Arts School, as well as keeping a private studio out of her home.

In addition to her teaching obligations, Kari performs regularly as a freelance violinist with artists and groups such as the Young Musicians Foundation, Richard Clayderman, and the Pacific Opera Project. Kari has also won permanent positions with the Amarillo Symphony of Amarillo, Texas, and Resonance Horizon, a new orchestra in Southern California dedicated to performing music from video games, anime, TV series, and films. Kari is also a founding member of the Sunset String Quartet, a new quartet servicing all areas of Southern California with music for weddings and other events.

Students can expect to learn the basics of holding and creating sound from a stringed instrument; parts of the viola; the string names; note reading; and to have a really great time learning!

About Lisa C.
After playing the violin for over 20 years, Lisa was inspired to share the gift of music with others by her teacher, Susanna Sonnenberg. Lisa is a member of the American String Teacher’s Association, and has attended the 2017 ASTA National Conference. She currently performs with the Edgewood Symphony Orchestra. Lisa has played in recitals, the Chartiers Valley High School Orchestra, and was accepted to the 2006 PMEA District Orchestra. She has studied with Larry Weiss, Linda Andersen, and others. Lisa can’t remember a time before she learned how to play the violin; it has brought her great joy. Her favorite piece to play is the Bach Double Concerto in D Minor.

At 8 years old, Lisa fell in love with the violin. Throughout school, she studied with private teachers and played with the school orchestra. At home, her dogs were a great audie
nce.

Lisa went on to study history at the University of Pittsburgh, and later earned her law degree from Duquesne. She never forgot her violin, though, and continued to play in her spare time.

Music adds beauty to the world, and finally, after years of keeping the violin to herself, Lisa decided to share her playing with others. Lisa teaches traditional, classical method. The method books she uses include: Essential Elements for Strings, Samuel Applebaum, and All for Strings, among others. She supplements the technical exercises with repertoire from the Suzuki series. Lisa enjoys playing all types of music, in addition to classical, and teaches these songs, as well. Additional music includes pop artists like Taylor Swift, classic rock, electronic music like Lindsey Stirling, celtic, folk, and just about any other type of music you can think of. As a teacher, Lisa strives to be positive and encouraging. She believes that music should be fun, so her main goal is to make sure her students are having a good time!

Every student is unique, so I will tailor the lessons to you and make it fun! I'm passing on to you the training I received from the very best master teachers of the violin. Stringed instruments are challenging, but I believe in enjoying making music at every level, while establishing a strong foundation in good technique. For learning fundamentals of music theory and ear training, we will play various rhythm and improvisational games. I have extensive background in European classical music, and I've also done quite a bit of improvisation, some fiddling, and electric violin and viola. Whether you want to be the next Joshua Bell or the next Lindsey Stirling, I can help you improve your playing. I will help you sing, dance and tell a story through your violin or viola.

About Gloria
Born into a musical family in 1966, I have extensive performance experience as a classical violinist and violist, and I've been composing my own music since 2000. I am very grateful to have studied with some of the finest teachers of violin, viola and chamber music, and I graduated in 1990 from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, one of the best conservatories in the world. I've played often with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the San Francisco Symphony, and I was the Concertmaster of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia for 6 years.

I'd like to pass on the knowledge gained from my years of playing in orchestras, chamber groups and solo concerts. My teachers taught me the most refined techniques of tone production and continually showed me how to make the music come alive emotionally and tell a story.

I've also play
ed a lot of music by contemporary composers, in groups like Network for New Music and Orchestra 2001 in Philadelphia, as well as Left Coast Chamber Ensemble in the Bay area. Some special tours I went on were with the Philip Glass Ensemble and with Tan Dun, the composer of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

My own compositional adventures started in the the late 1990's when I started improvising with a DJ mix in a small club. Since then I have experimented a lot with pickups and electric violin. I've created surround sound collages, improvised music for modern dance, and learned digital audio editing skills. I am knowledgable about Pro Tools and Ableton Live. If you are interested in electric violin, looping or using MIDI effects, I can share what I've learned about these things.

I have two solo CDs of original music - one violin, one viola - you can find on CDbaby and bandcamp.com.

You can make music and be creative no matter what playing level you are on. I believe in having fun as you learn, and I stress learning by example and by ear. Reading music is good, too, but often that gets in the way of listening. We will build a foundation step by step and add on elements when you are ready. Also - I can help you be relaxed as you play. I have never had tendonitis or another occupational injury, thanks to good posture and technique. Body awareness is part of the process. Let's have fun- - you can do this!

NOTE: for students age 7 to 12, I require the parent to be present at the lesson and take an active interest in the student's progress. Also, the child must want to play this instrument.

I play viola and violin and am comfortable with teaching both!

About Carly
Hey there! Here's a little about the violin lessons that I teach.

For me, the absolute best thing about teaching violin is watching the student realize they've accomplished something they once struggled with. It's so fulfilling when my students are proud of the work they've put in. Becoming a violinist can be a lot like putting together a 2000 piece puzzle. It's really difficult at first, and there's a lot of different pieces you don't know where to put yet. Often times you just have to take a break, walk away, and come back to it later because you've been staring at it for way too long. You might leave feeling like you barely put any of it together, but don't fret, the next day is always easier! Eventually, pieces of the puzzle start to form into distinct parts of the picture, and you have a greater sense of intuition for where all th
e remaining pieces will go. The process itself gets easier down the road, because you've developed strategies and have spent so much time looking at your goal, i.e the finished picture on the box.
My role in this little analogy is to ensure you like the puzzle enough to keep going, give you hints on where to put pieces, and to show you the things you've put together that might have otherwise gone overlooked. All of which are easy for me to find simply because I, too, have done this puzzle before!
