I've been playing piano since I was 5. I gave it up for a little while to pursue guitar, and then began self-teaching around age 15, and especially throughout college. I pair piano hand-in-hand with songwriting as use techniques and scales to build a lesson plan for my students, as well as classical or modern music pieces.

About Olivia
I love to create. The way I'm most comfortable creating is through writing; whether it's a song, a short story, a poem or a script. Writing has always been the bass line in my life; the heartbeat.

Music and film are both passions of mine. I graduated from Berklee College of Music where I studied Songwriting and Music Therapy. I was pushed to my absolute limits lyrically and musically within these majors, and I am so grateful for it now that I'm on my own creative journey.

I have a great deal of experience, but I am also still learning. I think it is very important as a teacher to always be learning, especially through their students. Teaching these lessons is, of course, about progress and advancement - but also about enjoyment, confidence building and positive encouragement.

Awesome

Finding Olivia was no coincidence. My 11 year old daughter is so psyched when she has her lessons!
It is in Liv's home, just a 10 minute ride from where we live,it's warm, safe, and filled with talent.
The passion of music is everywhere you look,Daphne and Olivia are
Ike old souls that just jive together perfectly.
Daphne has gained confidence,a mentor, and a ton of fun,
I thought Daphne was on a short lived path,as kids often jump from one idea to the next, but I believe singing is something she will definitely peruse.
I am so pleased with Take Lessons and especially Olivia.

Regarding my methods of instructing piano students, I use the Middle
C method for players regardless of playing level. Those who are more
advanced use triads as well. My overall goal as a teacher is to work
with my students and give them the skills that are necessary to play
music that they enjoy. Instructional materials include either Faber,
Bastien, and/or Alfred Publications. A writing tablet compliments
presented lesson material too.
My instruction correlates with the age, the musical background, and
the public/private school music curriculum of the student. Each
lesson is a special musical vignette in the sense that it is a unique
learning time for the student. It is important for the student to be
motivated by the material that they are given and to have a full
understanding of the concept(s) that were taught in the lesson. Above
all other reasons, it is most important for the student to enjoy
their piano lessons and want to come back the next week. ...

About Michael
Born and raised in New Jersey, I have been involved with music for many years. The instruments that I play include Trumpet, French Horn, Handbells, Organ, Voice, and Piano. I received my formal education at Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA, which is where I earned a B.A. degree with Honors in Music. In order to obtain my Honors, I chose to develop elementary lessons on Chinese folk music. In my Junior year of college, I performed a dual media recital in both Voice and Piano, and for my Senior year recital, I focused on giving a Vocal performance. These recitals demonstrated the musical talent and techniques that I had developed throughout my experience at college. In addition to my musical experiences in college, I have also learned about various pedagogical approaches through both my vocal studies as well as my studies on the keyb
oard. There is always more than one approach to teaching musical concepts! As a musician, I have performed in both the Bethlehem/Allentown area and the central New Jersery area. In addition, I have sung as a member of the Princeton Pro Musica and sat as a member on the executive board of the Princeton Girlchoir. These experiences have enhanced my professional insight as a musical instructor today. At present, I am a teacher in the classroom, an organist at a local Presbyterian church, and a private piano instructor. Overall, I thoroughly enjoy seeing my students grow and develop as musicians.

Michael is a great teacher. He focuses on understanding of concepts. For more fluent play we always need to practice a lot, but if we do not understand the concepts behind musical notation, we do not even know where to begin. He is also very encouraging and guides us out of mistakes in a way that the logic sticks. Highly recommended - you will enjoy learning with him

Lessons with Mike Mraz was a Christmas present from my son, Andrew. I enjoy singing, yet have never had occasion to study music or to take private lessons. Mike helped me clarify my goals: breath control, vocal mechanics, reading music and having fun. He graciously sent me some primer materials and located sheet music for several of my favorite Broadway show tunes. Our five 45-minute sessions together were both instructive and enjoyable. As I approach age 70, I can check "work with a voice coach" on my "Bucket List." Kudos for Mike!

About Vincent
I have taught for 18 years, giving both private and group lessons. I am a professional musician, having played in numerous bands, recorded and played shows. I have taugh all ages, and all elvels, and all styles. I play a number of instruments including piano, guitar, bass, violin, banjo, mandolin, and harmonica, in addition to writing and singing. I took private lessons for over 10 years, and also studied music in both high school and college.

*** Lesson Details ***
A student can expect to be treated with respect, and have a lesson tailored around their abilities, interests, and amount of practice time. I make the lessons fun but also informative. I try to get to know my students so that they feel comfortable. I am laid back, but also determined that a student practice well, and learn not only the instrument but music fundamentals a
s well. I try to show students that learning music is a lifelong pursuit that can provide all types of fun and personal fulfillment, in addition to being a potential career and social outlet. After 3-6 months, the student will be playing songs, good ones, not just scales. They will also have learned basics, such as chords and scales, as well as sight reading.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Basement converted into music studio with instruments, and piano and keyboard. Parents can sit in on lessons. Street parking available.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide all lesson materials, listening examples, and, on occassion, an instrument. I often use my laptop to play songs and tutorials for students (who don't buy records like we did in the old days.) Generally, students must provide instrument.

*** Specialties ***
I tailor my lessons based on three factors: a student's interests, their ability, and their amount of practice time. I do not use a cookie cutter method of teaching because each student is different. I have studied, formally and informally, rock, pop, blues, jazz and classical. My specialties are rock and blues. On occasion, I will use method books, such as the Schirmer books for piano, but only if the student clearly seems to benefiting from them.

About Mikal
Hello my name is Mikal K. and I have been teaching piano for over 10 years and playing for over twenty!

I believe you should choose me as your piano instructor because I am different from the rest!

I have a Master's Degree in Education and what I have learned from my own schooling is that every student is different and every student should have a voice in how they are taught.

From this idea I have multiple ways you can learn. If you want the traditional way of sight reading that won't be a problem.

If you are not comfortable with reading I can teach you music theory.

What makes me different from the rest is that I will provide multiple activities, multiple modes for learning, and not just force you to learn one way.

*** Lesson Details ***
I aim to provide a half hour to hour lesson to all my students. In eac
h lesson I will bring to your home an IPAD and a MIDI keyboard.

With my students right now I start off with Sight Reading Games on the IPAD. Students can play a game while they learn.

After Sight Reading games students will then play their sheet music. This part of the lesson can be just sheet music found from your run of the mill piano books, but also music you have created yourself.

Students can work on their own music by using the IPAD app Notion. During lessons, I have helped students create their own songs and sheet music to go along with it by using technology.

How do I help students write their own songs? I use a visual called a Chord wheel and help students masters the basics of music theory. With this students do not have to know how to read music as a pro, they will use their knowledge of scales and chord progressions to make their own music.

To conclude I try to have a lesson that is different from the rest. Not a boring one where you just play and I tell you if you played a note correctly or incorrectly. I will give you the foundation and support to make you a great piano player by using my own methods that I believe change how one approaches both piano learning and teaching.

Lesson Plan:
5-10 min....I'll start the lesson by playing sight reading games on the IPAD that are tailored to focus on the notes your are learning in your sheet music.
10-20 min...we will work on playing the song/songs you are learning (reading) to play.
10-20 min....I will work with you away from reading and infuse music theory. Here we will learn scales and chord progressions. I also use a visual that helps tremendously in accomplishing this. With this knowledge I will help you start to write your own songs. I will then use technology to put your ideas to paper so that every week you have something you have created to practice on your own.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students should have their own piano to play on, however I do provide a midi keyboard and IPAD. The IPAD also has an APP that holds all the sheet music I own.

*** Specialties ***
I have prided myself in using my education to help me tailor a specific strategy for each student I use. In my opinion every student is different and have different skills and abilities. In this sense some students like to learn how to read and are very traditional, while others like to play by ear and don't want to read at all. I have encountered all types of students and tried to make learning piano enjoyable for every one of them by using different approaches to my teaching methods. With this perspective I believe I can teach any student at any age.

Not only does he know everything there is to know about music, he's interested in keeping the lessons and learning interesting and fun. You can tell he really cares about trying to help his students to both progress, learn some theory, but to have fun and build skills they'll use/enjoy for a long time. Really impressive.

We will work on whatever style the student will like to learn! If they are a beginner, we will go through all of the basics slowly and very thoroughly. I like to start by having my students get familiar with the piano and exploring all of the sounds it can make. Students will learn how to identify notes on the piano and also through reading music. Lessons will always be fun and engaging!

About Matt
I attended West Chester University from 2011-2015 and graduated with my bachleor's in music education. I performed in the marching band, symphonic band, wind ensemble, jazz ensembles, various trumpet ensembles, and a brass quintet. One of my trumpet ensembles made it to the semifinals in the National Trumpet Competition. I backed up various world famous trumpet artists during the International Trumpet Guild Conference at Valley Forge in 2014 such as Bobby Shew, Randy Brecker, Tine Thing Helseth, Canadian Brass, and many others. I took lessons from Robert Skoniczin and Jean Christophe Dobrzelewski during my time at WCU.

I can teach any style that you are interested in and can take students of all ages. I believe it is important to have a good musical foundation so we will go over music theory as well in lessons. I have extensive experie
nce teaching trumpet, guitar, piano, bass, ukulele, and saxophone. We will play whichever style of music you prefer. Lessons will be fun!

In piano lessons my goal is to not only give students a knowledge of the instrument but also a love for music and playing. In lessons we will learn how to read music and the basics of music theory while also learning fun songs. For younger students I like to use fun teaching aids as we learn music theory to engage their attention and make learning enjoyable. I also seek to get to know my student's musical interests so that as we progress we can include fun songs into our lessons like Disney songs, popular music, or church music.

About Katie
Katie has been teaching piano lessons for the past 6 years and has been teaching private voice for 3 years. She is currently available to teach lessons in her studio and at student's homes. Through lessons Katie has helped students explore repertoire that they are interested in, build a foundation of classical technique, learn music theory and ear training, and build a love for playing music.

Katie earned her Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance from James Madison University. She is currently a graduate student at Westminster Choir College where she is continuing to study classical voice through her studies of Vocal Performance and Pedagogy. She looks forward to using her training to help all of her attain their musical goals and to have fun in their lessons.

Through my piano lessons, students will be able to gain better confidence with the instrument, improve their sight-reading skills, and also improve their general musicianship in various styles, (classical, jazz, etc...)

About John
Hi Everyone!

My name is John Nydam, and I'm an active pianist in the Princeton, NJ area. I have been playing the piano for over 16 years and have experience performing in many styles (classical, jazz, etc...). Currently, I am a student at Princeton University, intending to pursue a jazz performance certificate.
I regularly play in the Princeton Jazz Program; I have been the pianist for several small ensembles as well as the pianist for the Princeton University Concert Jazz Ensemble. I was also co-music director and pianist for "Singing in the Rain," a student-run senior thesis project in Spring 2016. I have also had experience performing in other ensembles, including the New England Conservatory Youth Jazz Orchestra and the NAfME All-National Honor Jazz Ensemble. In 2014, I received an opportunity to perform with the Massac
husetts All-State Ensemble at the Newport Jazz Festival. I have also attended numerous summer music institutes, including the Boston University Tanglewood Institute (Young Composers), the Berklee Five-Week Performance Program, and the Skidmore Jazz Institute.
I believe that I not only will be able to help students improve and gain more confidence at the instrument but will also be able to relate with them on what it's like to learn a new instrument. Students can also check out my SoundCloud page to get an idea of my work. I'm open to working with students of all ages, and I look forward to hopefully meet some of you!

I find that spark, the reason you want to learn. I find the reason you want to continue. I have been taught with the logic that you must love what you do and with that love, you can do it well. I start with easy basics, like triads and block chords, and then progress to harder sequences with eight notes. I also strive for the knowledge of music theory while learning piano. Without learning theory, you cannot accurately know what you are playing. I can also find the reason you chose to play and we will explore that together. Finding the reason you are inspired to do something can help with the frequency of which you practice or continue an art form.

About John
I am a college student at Westminster Choir College, who has been studying piano for a while now. I am well versed in classical repertoire such as Bach, Brahms, Chopin and more. I think there is a certain up I have personally. I can relate to my student because of my age and I can craft a lesson where I can be more relatable to the student because of my age. I start with the basics and work our way up, starting with easy exercises that challenge the brain and that target certain areas. With those addressed, we then move on to repertoire that also highlights critical points of study that the student needs to address. The Bach Inventions can target fingering issues and use of counterpoint among the hands. I teach block chords and elemental piano skills before moving onto harder concepts like triplets and 3 against 2.

I have studied with
Ms. Jean Schneider, she is an accompanist with the Michigan Opera Theatre and personal pianist for freelance gigs. I am now currently studying with Dr. Parente of Westminster Choir College. He has written books, played in concert halls around the world and strives to get all his students in flow, to perform at their very best.Outside piano, I am a classical singer, studying as a baritone, who is training with Sharon Sweet of Westminster Choir College. Please feel free to ask about a resume as I would be happy to provide one. My name on Facebook is John Vandevert, feel free to reach out.
