I specialize in Test Prep (NYC Gifted & Talented Test, SHSAT, TACHS/HSPT/COOP, SSAT/ISEE, Common Core, Regents, college/graduate admissions tests [i.e. SAT/ACT, GRE/GMAT]) and tutor a number of academic subjects in Mathematics (Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, Linear Algebra, Combinatorics), Statistics and Science (especially Physics) and K-12 English. I am particularly interested in Number Theory, Systems Engineering (Feedback Theory), Electronics (Analog Circuit Design) and Cosmology. My interests also include gifted learning and STEM education. For example, I was successful in helping a 5-year old pass the NYC Gifted & Talented Test so he could enroll in any New York City school participating in the program.

I have several years experience working with various people from different backgrounds as an engineer (hardware+software) and as business developer in multinational companies and startups and this exposure has given me deeper and practical insights into personality and intelligence enabling me to adapt my teaching style to different needs and situations. Furthermore, I have learned from experience that there are three best tools for learning: practice, practice and more practice!

Tutoring for yourself or for your son/daughter is both an investment in time and money for a future return so please also plan accordingly. Now, I make sure that I do not totally depend on tutoring for income so I can maintain a certain level of quality. In other words, when there is a match in objective, budget and schedule, I am quite happy to be part of someone's educational journey. I consider it indeed a very special privelege to be able to help a student because it is my experience that effective education can be life-changing. Finally, I am aware that other tutors may be in a better position to meet your existing situation so we have to accept that and move on.

Tutoring Rate (IMPORTANT): I only do in-person tutoring because I believe effective learning is multi-dimensional and personal not flat and distant. My minimum lesson length is 1.5 hours for Academic subjects and 2.0 hours for Test Prep. My rates for children and teens will in principle be at least the same as adults because I actually invest more time and effort since I have to consider the feedback of at least 2 individuals (student+guardian) compared with an adult student. Different arrangements possible on a case-by-case basis. Please see each subject rate for more details.

When I am not tutoring, I am involved in projects related to technology, hospitality and service industries. I also enjoy cooking especially when I can make an ordinary dish into something extra-ordinary by adding that little "extra."

I️ was connected to Rod through a tutoring agency. I️ contacted the agency because I️ recently graduated college and wanted to get into grad school but had not taken a math class since the 10th grade. The school I️ was applying to needed a minimum math score for the GRE, which I️ knew would be a enormous stretch for me. Additionally, I️ always had trouble with math and knew I️ would need a tutor to re-teach me everything I️ needed to know to get the score I️ wanted. Initially, the agency connected me to 3 different tutors who were all absolutely terrible! Sometimes they didn’t even know how to answer sample questions in the workbooks! Finally, I was connected to Rod. After our first meeting I️ knew he would be the one who would help me improve. After a month of intense work with him my GRE math scores actually improved a full 12 points! Beyond that, he literally taught me math in a way in which I️ actually understood it. Before I️ just thought I couldn’t learn, but now I’m confident that I️ actually retained everything and it even made sense! I’m so grateful to have met Rod because before him I️ truly felt hopeless. I️ would definitely recommend Rod to anyone who is looking to drastically improve their math skills. I initially reached out to Rod for Algebra 1 review because I felt that my daughter lacked a solid foundation in algebra. However, after a couple of sessions, we have decided to switch gears toward geometry with Rod’s recommendation. Throughout the geometry lessons, algebra practice was incorporated. I am happy that not only did Rod tailor his lessons to my daughter’s goals but also he gave her a lot of encouragement. My daughter found it extremely helpful that she got to explain and discuss with Rod, which made lessons interactive and real learning. Now going back to school, my daughter feels confident, thanks to Rod!

Rod worked with my daughter weekly for a couple of months leading up to the NYC state tests. With Rod's careful, concerted planning and diligence, my daughter's score went from 2.4 on the 7th grade Math state test, to a 2.8 in 8th grade, which equates to a move from below the 50th percentile, to between the 50th and 75th percentile. My daughter's in-school math instruction was chaotic and disjointed, and I attribute her improvement to Rod's intervention.

I do not see teaching as simply repeating what has been already detailed in text books and lectures. Everyone’s mind is different and thus everyone has a unique perception to understanding one issue or another. Things are better illustrated with an example.

A while back, there was a television show hosted by a T.V. personality named Monty Hall. In the show, Monty presented a contestant with 3 closed doors. Behind one door was a new car. And behind each of the other two doors was a goat. The contestant had the option to choose one door so as to win the new car.

The probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 or door 3 was the same, about 33.33%. Let us say that the contestant picked door 1. Monty would then open one of the other two doors that were not chosen by the contestant. There were 3 terms in the game: 1) Monty knew what w
as behind each door; 2) Monty cannot open the door that was already chosen by the contestant; 3) Monty would only open a door that hides a goat.

Let us say Monty opened door 3 revealing a goat. Monty then asked the contestant if the contestant would like to switch to door 2 or keep his original choice of door 1. Contestants would be bewildered not knowing really what to do. Was it better to keep the originally choice or was it better to switch or it would make no difference whether to keep the original choice or switch?

Meet Marilyn vos Savant. Marilyn wrote a column called “Ask Marilyn” in a newspaper called Parade. Marilyn was known for having one of the highest recorded IQ. A reader sent Marilyn a letter asking her if it was better to switch or not to switch. Marilyn stated in her column that a contestant should switch since switching doubled the contestant’s chances of winning. Many of Marilyn’s readers erupted in protest including readers with Ph.D., mathematicians, and academicians. Most people believed that the probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 was the same of 50%.

This became known as The Monty Hall Problem or The Monty Hall Paradox. Articles and books were written over this problem. Actually Marilyn was right and this was proven using computer simulation. Yet until today many people cannot understand that switching doubles the chances of winning.

At first glance this paradox might seem irrelevant to teaching. But I think it does. This paradox tutor the mind in the subject of structured thinking which is very important in learning.

Although I am a statistics major, programming is a big part of my curriculum as my concentration within statistics is computer science/machine learning. I've taken more than my fair share of Computer science courses at Carnegie Mellon University and even my statistics assignments often require heavy programming. My current job is as the sole web developer for a growing company and this includes front and back end development as well as database management.

I am a student at Carnegie Mellon University and have been teaching or tutoring for close to a decade now. This includes paid and volunteer private tutoring, classroom teaching, teaching assistant, and even a summer camp for elementary and middle-school students to learn computer science and programming skills. I also competed in math club during high school and was particularly successful in my senior year competing in statistics (6th place in the individual Nationals statistics event).

To some parents these might seem like useless facts but as an experienced teacher I can tell you that connecting with students on unrelated topics has an invaluable effect on the student-teacher relationship and will make for a smoother, unfiltered learning atmosphere. Not to mention it's much more exciting to refer to a sports analogy for a word problem rather than the unrelatable problems people are unfortunately used to ("person A buys x ft of fence...").

I have been working with Mary Anne on my computer programming skills for the last three months, and I have had a wonderful experience with her thus far. She has helped me with programming in both Matlab and Python, and on a variety of different projects. She is very good at explaining how to use the software, but more importantly, she is very patient when actually troubleshooting my attempts at coding.
