About April
I'm a 'classically trained' voice teacher who specializes in the biology of singing: JAZZ, R&B, POP, and GOSPEL. I have performance arts training and experience and have
a liberal arts degree from Columbia University/Master of Fine Arts Education from City College of NY.
I perform as a Jazz Vocalist at various night spots, concert halls, and social events. As a Voice Coach, I have the good fortune to share my vocal skills while working with this organization.
Singing is the joy I share as a performer and as a teacher. Anyone can sing, and do it on a superior level. It takes desire and the willingness to practice the skills necessary until the goal is achieved.

To produce great sounds when singing it is essential to adopt beneficial singing habits in order to produce sounds that are more relaxed and healthy.
Studen
ts will learn Basic Components of Singing:
Pitch, Rhythm, Breath Control and Diction

Students will learn vital techniques to create a connected voice blending head, chest, and diaphragm. Students will learn warm-up exercises that strengthen vocal cords and loosen the muscles needed to produce a professional sound and the importance of singing exercises to achieve this objective.

Students will learn how to avoid the most common singing mistakes that prevent singers from producing a clean and professional vocal tone.
For the purpose of voice projection, students will learn to use the diaphragm, the muscles beneath the ribcage;
how to use emotions, enunciation, and clarity.
Students will learn to sing a favorite song with the focus on elements of singing.
Each lesson to begin with a brief review of previous.

Every student is unique, therefore, lessons are designed to fit the student individually. My teaching style is molded to satisfy each students wants and needs. I also like to focus on developing proper playing habits. I love taking lessons with Bill! I'm returning to clarinet after playing as a child, and Bill has made the entire process really fun and rewarding. He's helped me gain a deeper appreciation for the instrument and the music we're learning, and provides the right amount of challenge to keep me engaged and progressing while still enjoying the process. Bill has really deep music knowledge, which makes him a really versatile instructor. He's helped me even enjoy doing scales!

Very good teacher for my son. He is patient knowledgeable and is able to keep a sometimes unfocused 11 year old, on the topic of learning the saxophone.

About Diana
Diana is a classical guitarist and pianist originally from Santa Fe, New Mexico. In addition to guitar and piano, she teaches voice, ukulele and songwriting in New York City, where she now resides. She spent the better part of a decade studying closely with two mentors: celebrated classical guitarist Lynn McGrath, and revered pianist Stephen Montoya. As a high school student, Diana regularly performed in recitals and participated in competitions and festivals across the U.S., including the Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) and The Parkening Guitar Competition, where she received masterclass instruction from distinguished guitarists like David Russell, Ana Vidovic and Christopher Parkening. She went on to study classical guitar at the North Carolina School for the Arts as the youngest student admitted in her focus at the age of 17, and la
ter completed her studies in music performance, composition, and foreign language at the University of New Mexico. In addition to her classical studies, Diana sang in a variety of traveling choral groups throughout high school and took small roles in the Broadway musicals ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ and ‘Rent’.

In the course of her studies, Diana was honored with awards of excellence from the National Honors Society of Guitar and recognized for her performances with the critically acclaimed woman’s guitar ensemble, ‘Presti Quartet.’ She was selected two years in a row to perform 1st chair in the New Mexico ALLSTATE Guitar Orchestra - the first-ever young woman to earn that position. The following year she was chosen as one of twelve guitarists to represent music in education in the United States.

In the time since her studies, Diana has called many places home. She lived in New Orleans for several years and in that time her music interests broadened to embrace traditional American forms, such as jazz and the blues. During that time she ran a private music practice, teaching children and young adults to become proficient with music. She continued her travels, her studies and her teachings during the summer of 2017 in Spain. She has been living, studying and teaching in New York City since the fall of 2017, always carrying with her the belief that music should never feel like a chore and that learning music should be curiosity-driven, active, enjoyable, and emphasize self-expression. Diana believes in building a strong foundation of musical knowledge with her students by providing the tools to create good habits from the beginning and encouraging effective, deliberate practice. It is her mission to inspire aspiring musicians as a music educator and bring a life-long love of music to her students.

I'm a multi-instrumentalist, teacher, composer, arranger, freshly transplanted to Brooklyn after seven great years in Boston, Massachusetts. My professional experience on saxophone, keyboards, clarinet, flute, and bass in many different musical styles has offered me a wide-ranging palate to teach from. For the past five years, I've worked for multiple organizations and agencies as a private lessons instructor, averaging 15-20 students at any given time and maxing out at over 30! My approach to lessons is laid back, yet goal-oriented. My main goals are to equip my students musical and instrumental fundamentals, help them discover their particular passions within music and work towards related goals, and to foster an environment rooted in fun and mutual respect.

Tyler was the piano teacher for our two daughters for almost 5 years. They were piano beginners aged 4 and 6 when we started. My daughters are more on the shy side, and Tyler ended up being the perfect teacher for them. He is gentle and patient but at the same time got them excited about learning the instrument and playing music of different genres. My daughters enjoyed the lessons very much and they were sad to see Tyler leave for New York. I can highly recommend Tyler as a teacher especially for shy beginners like my daughters were.

I found that J.Q. was a quality tutor. He adapted to what I needed to focus on for Mandarin, which was tones, and as such I was able to improve my foundation. He also has a good knowledge of the language apart from just being fluent, and could answer any question I had. I definitely recommend him.

Some of these benefits include teaching disipline, improved attention span, brain development which is unique to music performance and enjoying the experience of playing the flute or saxophone well. I have had the pleasure of studying with Dr. Sonett for one semester this year during which time I have experienced immense improvements in my playing. Dr. Sonett creates a comfortable, warm relaxed environment, and even though I tend to be shy she put me at ease which exponentially increase my ability to learn from her. Dr. Sonett made sure to know what each student's focus was to make sure that lessons were effective for what the student wanted to get out of them. I have never had a teacher that I felt completely comfortable with and that has increase my love for music. I echo the sentiments of the two above students, Dr. Sonett creates a very welcoming space to express yourself through music and personalizes lessons to fit the individual. During just the few short months I have studied with her I have improved much more than I had in several years with other lesson teachers. I have enjoyed studying with her, and I would highly recommend her to any students looking for lessons.

Dr. Sonnett taught my 7 year old daughter this past year, and I was very impressed with her warm, relaxed, and consistent approach to learning. My daughter's technique and musicality progressed rapidly throughout the year, and never at the expense of the joy of music. My daughter can be a challenge - as her mind wanders easily - yet Dr. Sonnett always brought the focus of the lesson back to the flute in a respectful and often humorous way. It was a wonderful year!

My approach is to respond to the needs of the individual student. With beginners, I initially assess the student’s musical ear and use games and other fun exercises to introduce fundamental elements of music theory. At the same time, I work with the beginner to establish a foundation of good habits when relating to their instrument, whether it is piano or violin. With more advanced students and those preparing for auditions and competitions, I encourage careful attention to intonation, rhythmic accuracy, and expressiveness.
