Learn to play both classical favorites and obscure gems by improving your technique, sightreading, and music theory skills!

Includes technique, sight-reading, musicality, repertoire selection, music theory, etc., with a focus on classical piano repertoire, according to the student's experience and needs.

About Barbee
Hi! My name is Barbee and I’ve been teaching and singing professionally for over ten years. I love helping my students reach their musical goals, while having fun making music at the same time!

I accept students of all levels and ages 8 and up. Some of my students are working musicians, actors, and voice actors; many are teenagers who aspire to study music and/or theatre in college and become professional performers. And of course many are enthusiastic avocational singers and pianists who simply love music and want to work on their technique in a fun environment.

Some recent student accomplishments include:
*Leading roles in musicals and operas
*International concert tours
*Acceptance to multiple NYC performing arts high schools
*Multiple scholarship offers from universities to study music
*Acceptance to pre-professional traini
ng programs such as Paper Mill Playhouse and AMDA Summer Conservatories

Both voice and piano lessons are based on a foundation of healthy technique while incorporating musicianship skills and encouraging the student to develop their own creativity. I am experienced in teaching many genres and styles including Broadway/musical theater, classical/opera, pop, rock, R&B, country, and folk. I encourage my students to explore new styles and apply good technique to any style they may choose to sing or play.

I love helping my students prepare for auditions. As an active performer myself I have auditioned many, MANY times for different organizations, and I have also been on "the other side of the table" and I know what qualities audition panels are looking for. Let me help you show your best qualities at your audition!

As a member of both NATS (National Association for Teachers of Singing) and ACDA (American Choral Directors Association) I am constantly working to improve my teaching skills by keeping up with the latest pedagogical research. I love sharing new tips and techniques with my students!

I strive to create a lesson environment that is open and honest, where my students are never afraid to ask questions or try something new. I am always happy to explain concepts in a different way and I encourage improvisation and creativity in addition to healthy technique and strong musicianship.

If you have any questions for me, please don’t hesitate to send me a message by clicking “Ask Barbee a Question” at the top of the page.

In-studio equipment: Yamaha P-115 digital piano with 3-pedal unit and bench, music stands, large library of scores and anthologies for repertoire exploration

Please note that you MUST have an acoustic or digital piano with weighted keys for in-home piano lessons. You MUST have a piano or keyboard for in-home voice lessons. If you are looking to purchase an instrument I am happy to provide recommendations.

Please note that students are expected to purchase all music, curriculum, and other materials as appropriate.

With over 10 years of teaching experience, I am able to prepare students for polished, accurate, playing with an emotional connection. Beginners will learn to read music using method books that are supplemented with authentic classical pieces (as opposed to beginners' versions of popular pieces). Intermediate students will learn classical pieces from all musical eras. We will cover all major and minor scales, arpeggios, sight reading, and aural skills.

About Cindy
Regardless of where your musical interests lie, I can help you improve your skills! Growing up, I fell in love with playing and singing all styles of music! I've delved into classical, jazz, R&B, soul, gospel, reggae, soca, pop and musical theater, and I can teach you how to apply proper technique to the genre(s) of your choice!

If you're looking to become a better singer, we will focus on finding the beauty and power in your voice in a healthy manner. Vocal health is an important component of everything I teach, and I work to eliminate strain and vocal fatigue. We will work on balancing your vocal registers to give you control over the troublesome middle range. With a healthy foundation in place, we will fine tune your skills by addressing pitch accuracy, vocal control, phrasing, dynamics, expression and microphone technique.

If y
ou're interested in playing piano, you will learn how to read music and/or play by ear. You'll learn scales, chords, arpeggios, sight-reading, and basic music theory. For singers who are interested in piano, I've developed a great technique to teach you how to accompany yourself.

For songwriters, I can help you write stronger lyrics and set them to music appropriately.

In general, I'm pretty upbeat and fun. However, I expect you to practice. When you practice, you hear and feel the difference and everyone's happy! If you don't practice, you'll remain in the same place, and it's frustrating for everyone. :( Please, please, please practice! :)

My degree in music education and wide range of experience allows me to accommodate different learning styles. I have a knack for breaking down seemingly difficult or mysterious concepts in a way that's easy to understand. I also understand the demands of being a full time musician, and can offer advice to students who are interested in going that route.

I would love to help you enhance your enjoyment of music by making it fun and easy for you to learn!

Our daughter was very excited about her lesson with Cindy. She thought it was incredibly helpful, making singing “easier” in a single lesson. She also liked how friendly and positive Cindy was and how well she explains technique. She is asking to take many more lessons with her. Very professional and talented instructor.

From the moment we walked in Cindy made my shy daughter immediately feel at ease. Her approach and ability to connect with students at any age (I overheard her lessons with an older woman), makes her a gem. She provided helpful tips to help improve while practicing. With each lesson, my daughter walked away feeling more confident and clear on what she needed to practice at home. I would definitely recommend her.

I graduated from Juilliard with and MS degree, studying with the most prominent teacher of the last 50 years: Rosina Lhevinne. I have taught 14 year olds through college age students the great standard literature and have helped them all develop an exceptional technique and practice regimen. My students have witnessed their progress in the form of self esteem, confidence and joy in practicing and making music. This in turn has given them true stature and grounding to thrive in all their undertakings and goals toward a plentiful future.

About Elizabeth
I am energetic, enthusiastic, bright, and a serious musician who is eager to help you develop your musical and pianistic talents to their peak level. To that end, I suggest appropriate literature for your desires, needs and growth, and I encourage some technical studies that help to aid you in facility and finger strength and resilience. As well, I have an exquisite Steinway piano which has a gorgeous sound. I respond to in-between lesson phone calls, and emails or texts as well. I am excited about what I have done for decades and hope to have you join my class of students.

I am 80 years old and was a piano student with Liz Wolff for about 9 year when she lived in Minneapolis. Liz is a wonderful instructor who pushed me to tackle more difficult and challenging music than I would have dared try on my own. While she was particular about both technical and musical issues, she always encouraged me to reach higher standards. She encouraged me to overcome my fear of performance. She was a friend as well as a teacher.

Dan is definitely the best voice instructor I have ever had. Not only is he warm and down to earth, he is incredibly supportive, knowledgeable and makes practice fun. He took a lot of time to get to know my goals and interests when it came to singing; my confidence in my voice has been shaken a lot due to less than encouraging voice instructors and he was very empathetic and genuine in his support. I would highly recommend him as a voice instructor!

I'm playing piano for many years that I can say that If you always dream about playing piano but you don't know how you can start or you're looking someone who has a patient and treats kind to your kids, I'm ready to teach. I would like to cause to be loved the piano and share my knowledge.
Especially, I really like to spend time with kids and I have a very understanding way of teaching.

About Aysen Idil
I'm a professional opera singer who is pursuing a master program in Voice in Mannes School of Music right now. As my professional stage experiences, I sang with some big professional opera companies for many years. I performed leading roles in opera productions of New York Lyric Opera Theatre, Ankara State Opera House and Samsun State Opera House and had many concerts with the orchestras. During my active performing life, I've been giving private voice lessons. And in my perspective, If you have professional stage experiences, you can be more equipped for teaching, because sometimes the knowledge might not be enough to teach, it is required to show the students how it should be exactly. I feel full of energy and willing to share the music with you!
