Ukulele:
Sometimes abbreviated to uke, it is a member of the lute family of instruments; it generally employs four nylon or gut strings or four courses of strings. Some strings may be paired in courses, giving the instrument a total of six or eight strings. The ukulele originated in the 19th century as a Hawaiian adaptation of the Portuguese machete, a small guitar-like instrument, which was introduced to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants, mainly from Madeira and the Azores. The tone and volume of the instrument vary with size and construction. Ukuleles commonly come in four sizes: soprano, concert, tenor, and baritone. If you just want to play songs I'm happy to teach you the songs you love. I can also teach you to become a musician by teaching from the beginning with the very basics of finger placement, reading, notes, rhythms, songs, scales, theory and improvisation....or, we can do both!

I am a former classroom music teacher, with an MA in Music Education, and I have been a working musician/recording artist for 30 years. I am patient and experienced in getting results. I believe the recipe for music education is Knowledge, Practice, and Fun = Joy. Spreading joy is a valuable service for good community.

I can help every student achieve his or her goals, whether it's to lead a campfire circle or play Carnegie Hall someday. (One of my students opened for B.B. King, and most of my students will play music for the rest of their lives. Some have grown to lead their own bands.)
I offer lessons in:
Guitar: All styles: Beginner to Advanced.
Piano, voice, ukulele, saxophone, and recording: Beginner to Intermediate.

I find ukulele to often work better than guitar for many young students (typically years 10 and younger). When appropriate, the student can transition to guitar having increased hand strength and learned many of the concepts needed to excel. Of course, ukulele makes for a fun (and ultra-portable) instrument in its own right!

Experienced teacher of 26 years available for eager beginner and intermediate students of all ages! I structure my lessons so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong foundation of rhythm, chords, knowledge of the instrument and proper hand skills. I specialize in pop and rock and typically use songs the students choose to help them develop their skills.

Did you know the Ukulele is tuned exactly like the top 4 strings of a guitar capoed up 5 frets, and the 4th string is tuned an octave up? this being the case, all the shapes one learns on one or the other is transferable knowledge!
