About Steve
I'm is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music. I've been teaching private music students since 1995. I've also developed and taught classes at both the high school and college level.

As a Songwriter, Producer, and Recording Artist I recorded the single, The Friend of Africa - Steve Kercher and the African Children’s Choir, featuring legendary bassist, Abraham Laboriel, drummer, JR Robinson (Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones), and guitarist Marty Walsh (Supertramp). I also recorded the full-length album, Maiden Voyage. Both recordings are distributed through iTunes, Spotify, and other major digital music retailers and streaming services worldwide.

I work hard to develop a curriculum for each student based on their needs and interests in music. Let's talk about your goals!

“Steve has been teaching both of my children for almost t
hree years. Steve is incredibly patient and the kids really enjoy the lessons (they work hard and laugh a lot!) . More importantly, though, Steve knows what he is doing and has great experience. He teaches technical concepts and theory while giving kids the freedom to choose songs and genres they enjoy most. Steve connects with kids and they respond to his enthusiasm by wanting to practice and wanting to progress. Steve fosters a love for all music which gets the kids excited to learn songs that might be outside of what they currently know. I would strongly recommend Steve to beginners, as well as advanced musicians.” Jennifer Kuhlman, Beverly MA

About Bil
I am one of those individuals for whom teaching is just something that I have to do. I started giving music lessons sometime in the 80's and have loved working with all levels of skill and experience. My students say that I am patient, adaptive and encouraging, committed to making music fun.

I have a Masters of Music from New England Conservatory in Jazz Piano and am comfortable and fluent in a number of musical styles, including pop, rock, gospel, traditional hymnody, jazz, and R&B. Although I love and study classical music, it is not something I teach at this point.

In addition to private lessons and performing, I do music transcription, workshops, and all forms of vocal and instrumental arranging. Bil Mooney-McCoy is a life-long Boston resident who has been playing music all his life. Having served as a church musician for more
than 30 years, I am currently the Director of Worship for the chapel at Gordon College, a small Christian school north of Boston. I'm often involved in city-wide music events in Boston’s faith-based community and in demand as a featured musician for church services, parties, concerts and other events.

I hold a Masters of Music from New England Conservatory in Jazz Piano and am comfortable and fluent in a number of musical styles. In addition to private lessons and performing, I do music transcription, workshops, and all forms of vocal and instrumental arranging. My passions include morning coffee, finding new guitar chords, creating killer PowerPoint presentations, and trying to figure out how to use my smart phone.

*** Lesson Details ***
My priority as a teacher is to make the learning process fun, life-giving, and productive. I teach with patience and humor, at a challenging but not frustrating pace.

Some quotes from my students:
"I absolutely love learning from Bil! I've watched my playing and the playing of others at church vastly improve as a result of his training."

"[Bil] is filled with a large amount of knowledge, so while sitting under him you not only learn about how to play but you learn about music history and theory. Beyond being a good teacher he is genuine and friendly and cares about others."

"I have really enjoyed working with Bil. His patience and wealth of knowledge has helped me come out of my musical shell and has encouraged me to discover my musical voice."

"Bil makes learning theory fun! His deep understanding of music is complemented by his contagious enthusiasm."

"Bil has taken me to a different level. I went from tab and basic guitar chords, to building jazz chords and a far greater understanding of music theory."

There are at least two ways that might set me apart from other teachers.

Firstly, I have honed and developed "people skills". I am an ordained minister and have held positions where I was formally and informally in a mentoring/pastoring role. I bring that sensitivity to my music lessons, understanding that personal and emotional issues can be triggered by the engagement with the music and skills being worked on.

Secondly, I've had a remarkable broad base of experience. My coursework has exposed me to a wide breadth of ideas and tools; my work life has been long and varied; I have had extensive experience in many different cultural contexts, both musically and otherwise; and I work well with many age groups and skill levels.

Regarding my teaching approach:
For beginners, I have a fairly consistent set of topics and skill sets to cover. Generally, in a few months, piano students (particularly those in middle school through adulthood) should know how to play major, minor and seventh chords, how to read simple chord charts and some very basic accompanying skills. Guitar students should know a dozen open chords and have been introduced to barre chords, and to have learned several styles of finger picking as well as strumming. Bass students should know how to find notes on the board and will have begun to learn how to fill out a song with an expressive but non-obtrusive bass line.

For intermediate students, the pace, direction and focus on lessons depends upon the goals and passions of the student along with the amount of time he or she has to practice. My goals for students at this level and beyond is to learn how to learn. I will use outstanding recorded examples of particular skills or stylistic idioms to help my students understand and master each new concept. I often will check in with my student to make sure that we are on track with what they are hoping for.

For advanced students, we will generally target very specific objectives. I also try to add elements of theory, history, culture, and even life lessons to apply to the topics we address. Because of my background in pastoral ministry, I can serve as a mentor addressing the emotional and relational issues of playing music as well as its technical aspects.

*** Studio Equipment ***
upstairs music room: fender Rhodes piano, keyboards, amps, drum set, seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
if for guitar or bass, that instrument; I expect piano students to have an available keyboard and for other students to have their own instrument(s).

*** Specialties ***
strong in jazz, rock, pop, gospel, sacred, R&B.

I am a full time music teacher during the academic school year in Lawrence, MA at an elementary school. I graduated from Gordon College in 2016 with a bachelor's degree in Music Education. I absolutely love teaching and making music with others! I can teach beginning piano and intermediate level.

I want my students to not only learn about music, but I want them to relate to their music and really gain a life-enriching experience. My lessons will teach new skills and incorporate those skills into familiar and new songs! While I want students to learn timeless songs from the past, I believe they can use their skills to learn songs they love as well. Students will be challenged as they move forward but not in a frustrating manner. I will work with students at any pace they need!

I have recently taken up piano in September 2015. I spend an average of 4-6 hours everyday practicing between the two instruments. Usually two hours each. Occasionally much more. I am very knowledged in the craft of practicing and love to share my knowledge of drums, drumming, piano and music in general. I am currently enrolled at northern Essex community college (necc) as a music performance major with plans of transferring to New England Conservatory (NEC) in Boston or Southern University of New York, (suny Purchase). I have taken lessons from many teachers to learn as much as I can. Music is my passion, and sharing that with others brings me great joy.

I offer 30 and 60-minute lessons to students of ALL ages and abilities!

A passionate teaching artist and arts advocate, I have maintained private flute studios in Massachusetts and my home state of Maine for several years. Most recently, I worked as a Flute Teaching Artist for El Sistema Somerville, where I taught private lessons and group woodwind technique classes. My firm belief in El Sistema’s philosophy of enacting social change through music led me to pursue a graduate certificate in Teaching Artistry, Social Entrepreneurship, and Orchestral Leadership from the Youth Orchestra of the Americas’ Global Leaders Program. During the program, I traveled to Haiti under the auspices of the Fulbright Association to teach flute students at the Cemouchca and Ecole de Musique Sainte-Trinité summer music programs.

Professional Performance Bio
graphy:

Praised by the Royal Gazette for his “beautiful phrasing” and “bright and lively playing,” flutist Nicholas Southwick made his international solo debut at the age of 18 performing the music of J.S. Bach with the Bermuda Chamber Orchestra in Hamilton, Bermuda and has since performed in Austria, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, and throughout New England. He holds awards from the Presser Foundation and the Bay Chamber Concerts (Rockport, ME), where he was recently honored with the Ezra Rachlin Prize for Excellence.

He has performed as principal flute with the Trentino Festival Orchestra, the Longy Conservatory Orchestra, the Gordon College Symphony Orchestra, and the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. During the summers, he has held a flute fellowship to the Trentino Opera Festival in northern Italy and studied at the Mozarteum University of Salzburg, Austria. He also participated in the Kneisel Hall Young Musician’s Program in Blue Hill, ME for four consecutive summers. An advocate for new music, Nicholas has performed with the Boston Opera Collaborative and acclaimed contemporary ensemble What is Noise.

Nicholas received his Bachelor of Arts degree Summa Cum Laude in music and French from Gordon College, where he was the first prizewinner of the 2015 Concerto Competition. He earned his Master of Music degree at Bard College’s Longy School of Music under the tutelage of Marco Granados and legendary flute pedagogue Robert Willoughby. He has performed in masterclasses for Trevor Wye, Rachel Brown, Samuel Coles, and Nicolas Duchamp of the Opéra de Paris.

About Anthony
Anthony has a very distinct, powerful and soulful voice that has become his signature sound that audiences around Boston and the east coast love. With his larger than life stage presence, he can command any size stage or venue.

Anthony has had an illustrious career for being so young. By the age of 18, he had been very fortunate to have already performed at incredible venues such as: Carnegie Hall Ny,NY; Disney World, FL; Times Square-Ny,NY; The Kennedy Center-Washington D.C.; The Teatro di Verona-Verona Italy; The City of Pompei-Italy, and The Vatican-Rome Italy.

Anthony started professionally singing while studying opera at Barry University, in Miami FL. It was there that he studied under Beverly Coulter. He also performed with the Miami Lyric Opera company at the tender age of 18! After spending time in the sun soaked shores of
Miami, he then found himself in Winchester

It was at the Shenandoah Conservatory, where he studied under world renowned tenor, Michael Forest, and Grammy award winning composer and director, Robert Shafer (a student of Nadia Boulanger). While at Shenandoah, he developed a strong knowledge of classical music and form, and really began to discover his "voice" in his compositions. As well as develop an insatiable thirst for the verismo movement in opera.

He soon left Shenandoah to start pursuing performance opportunities, and wound up auditioning for the Berklee College of Music. Where he currently attends and studies voice and jazz composition.
