The Uke is such a unique and fun instrument to play. Plus, it is probably the most accessible instrument I have ever taught. It’s great for those who can’t quite get the hang of guitar. It helps build strength and rhythm that carries over directly to the guitar and other stringed instruments.
One of my favorite things to do is play duets with students, and the ukulele makes for some interesting pairings of instruments.

I've been teaching ukulele for 5 years and it is one of my favorite instruments to play and teach! Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to play several chords and as time goes on you'll be able to play the songs that interest you most. I specialize in pop music and typically use the Alfred Ukulele Method for Kids books or the Hal Leonard Ukulele Books for older students. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!

The ukulele is a creative adaptation and redesign of the machete de braga, a small stringed instrument that was introduced to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants in August of 1879. The Hawaiian people fell in love with the sound of the instrument and named it “ukulele" because the fingers of the performer dancing around on the neck and strings as a song was played resembled jumping fleas. Ukulele means jumping fleas in the Hawaiian language.

Since the ukulele is related to a European instrument and the guitar from Spain, the relative tuning is the same. It should be tuned a perfect fourth up from a guitar, so the first string is tuned to an A, second string should be tuned to an E, third string will be a C, & the fourth string should be tuned to a G an octave up. Most ukuleles have a fourth string that is an octave above what the normal progression would be of most stringed instruments. As a ukulele beginner, you’ll learn to keep your strumming steady while changing between 2-5 basic chords within a few lessons. You will find in just a few lessons that the songs you know and love are actually accessible and playable! With continued practice, you’ll start to create your own songs using the chords you know, and you will learn more complex chords, transposing, and reading melodies on the staff.
