It was a first lesson, so a bit hard to rate. Peter is personable and clearly an excellent guitar player. He helped me with several fingerings and a riff. He is going to work up a plan with exercises, etc., for our next lesson. That will give me a better sense of things

I've been around my whole life. My father was a musician, I was a musician and both my sons play guitar. I seen a lot of guitar players some good but very few really talented. Pete is by far one of the most talented I've known. Not only is Pete a gifted guitarist, but a very knowledgeable one technically.
Not only is Pete a very talented guitarist and technician, but Pete has the unique ability to teach as well. Not just to teach guitar like many instructors, but to make it fun and interesting as well. This ability to so talented and to be able to teach as well is a very rare gift. The best!!

I currently perform over fifty concerts a year with the Asylum Quartet, an award-winning ensemble acclaimed for virtuosity, creativity, and innovation. Here is my teaching philosophy in more detail:

Why learn music? Music shares many the benefits of other subjects. Learning an instrument teaches multi-level techniques of problem solving, responsibility, teamwork, literacy, and self-expression. But unlike any other subject, music unites three domains of learning: psychomotor (physical motion), cognitive (analytical thought), and aesthetic (assessment of artistic beauty). Music is a mode of self-expression shared by all cultures - this powerful universality suggests that music should be part of a well-rounded education. At its most basic, music requires us to learn to listen. The process of listening and learning from others is fundamental to human civilization, and music helps us develop listening skills to their full potential.

Why learn the saxophone? Invented in 1856, the saxophone is a relatively young instrument. Yet in its short history, the saxophone has rocketed to immense popularity. The saxophone plays well with others - in jazz combos and big bands, concert bands, saxophone quartets, and reed quintets - and projects effortlessly as a solo instrument. A hybrid between woodwind and brass instruments, the instrument is capable of the softest murmurs, the loudest bellows and honks, lovely singing lines, agile leaps and mesmerizing runs, and much more. Studying the saxophone offers the student access to stylistic variety and rich performance traditions second to none. Yet as a young instrument, the saxophone beckons with endless unexplored possibilities to the creative performer.

Why learn with me? The violin teacher Shinichi Suzuki wondered, "Japanese children can all speak Japanese!...How, by what means, does this come about?" We all now know the answer. Japanese children have abundant access to great models of Japanese-speaking: the adults around them. So as a teacher, I seek to provide a great model of saxophone playing. I rely on teaching by example, and encourage students to learn by ear whenever possible. In conjunction with ear training, I address fundamentals (breathing, tone production, articulation, voicing, reading music, and technique) in every lesson, so that students develop great technical ability on the instrument. Finally, I hope to provide a model of responsibility, empathy, and creativity, which I believe are central to our development as musicians and people.

***Equipment ***

Students should have a working saxophone with appropriate mouthpiece and reeds (see below), a music stand, and other lesson materials (metronome, tuner, notebook, method books / pieces, recording device, etc.). I often provide handouts of music and exercises in lessons.

IMPORTANT: If you are planning to buy a saxophone or mouthpiece, please consult with me first. Having a good quality saxophone and mouthpiece is essential to your success. There are a number of cheap saxophones and mouthpieces readily available, but they are often of poor quality. I can recommend options for your first saxophone or mouthpiece purchase that may be more expensive, but will help you succeed in the long term.

I specialize in classical saxophone, but also have experience performing, studying, and teaching jazz. My goal is to give students a solid set of fundamentals in saxophone playing, forge strong aural and reading skills, and engender a broad curiosity in listening habits. I believe modeling great playing is key. Of course, I want students to internalize and replicate a good saxophone sound. But I also want students to form the critical listening skills of mimicking and blending with other musicians. I believe these things will enable them to excel as musicians in any field.

STUDYING WITH ME:

Learning guitar should be interesting and fun! While we're studying all the different aspects of the instrument, you'll also be learning how to play your favorite songs and solos! I approach each student as an individual and structure their lessons according to what I determine they need, as well as what they are interested in musically. I concentrate on many different areas; ear training, theory, playing technique, improvisation, various styles of music, and, the physics of the guitar. Understanding how the instrument works is important in my opinion. My long term goal
is to teach a student how they can teach themselves down the line. Understanding why you’re playing something is just important as knowing how to play it. I aim to give a student rich and well rounded one-on-one time!

GENERAL BIOGRAPHY:

I have been teaching and performing for over a decade both in the US, and in England. I have played in various bands and have produced independent artists. I have worked for a recording studio and for various academic institutions including the Filomen M. D'Agostino Greenberg Music School in New York city.

I obtained my degree from Purchase College in New York and am a member of their Conservatory of Music.

*** Lesson Details ***
I construct lessons for each individual student depending on their musical tastes, goals, and current skill level etc. I want each person to get as much from their time studying with me as possible. Within three to six months, I'll have you working on timing, theory, ear training, improv, and songs/styles of music you may be interested in. I'm laid back, however, I expect at least the minimum practice time between lessons, which I'll change throughout the course of our time together depending on your skill level etc. Practice materials I draw up are included. I write out everything in plain English and do not require the use of sheet music!

Small recording studio, piano, various guitars, bass, and amps.

*** Specialties ***
I concentrate on ear training, improvisation, and explore styles ranging from pop, alternative, rock, prog, and blues, to metal, funk, and folk etc. I do not require sight reading skills for any level of student. Rather, I work with the student with theory and arrangement conventions to really understand the music. This intern, greatly sharpens their musical ear and helps them to learn music much faster because they understand how it is put together; why and how it works, etc.

***Teaching Special Needs***
I have experience teaching students who have been visually impaired,
blind, hearing impaired, or who have had mild learning disabilities. I
am also comfortable with a student bringing their service dog or
therapy dog to our lessons if they wish.

A solid teacher with a lot of experience

Cameron is great at tailoring the lessons to my musical taste without compromising the theory, basics and fundamentals.
I have been taking lessons for one year and will not go elsewhere anytime soon. His vast musical knowledge helps merge the theory with concrete examples. No question remains unanswered.

I've been taking bass lessons from Cameron for a few months now. He's a great instructor. Very knowledgeable, very patient, and puts in time outside our lessons to be prepared to teach or play new material that I am interested in. I always look forward to my lessons. Mezzo-soprano Rachel Abrams has captured audiences throughout the United States with her rich and warm timbre, beautiful blend, and dynamic stage presence. A native of Stockton, California, Rachel was born into a musical family and quickly developed an affinity for the performing arts. She first fell in love with classical music as an oboist and gradually found her niche as a singer through her passion for languages, literature, and theater. In the fall of 2012, she relocated to Connecticut where she continues to be an active performer of opera, oratorio, art song, crossover, and new music.


Formerly a soprano, Ms. Abrams has been featured with multiple companies throughout New England. Most recently, she captured audiences as the First Niece in Benjamin Britten’s Peter Grimes and Mrs. Nordstrom in A Little Night Music with Madison Lyric Stage, Mabel in Pirates of Penzance with the Greater Meriden Concert Chorale, with Hartford Opera Theater as Miss Paige in Boston based composer Dan Shore’s An Embarrassing Position, Mrs. Nordstrom in A Little Night Music, and the premiers of Christopher McCormick’s opera In A Grove and Miss Romano in Jeremy Beck’s I Can Hardly Wait!. She has also performed the role of Peep Bo in The Mikado and as Casillda in scenes from The Gondoliers with the Simsbury Light Opera Company, with Greater Worcester Opera and the 4th Wall Stage Company in Massachusetts.

Prior to moving to Connecticut, Rachel lived in St. Louis, Missouri, where she frequently performed with the St. Louis Symphony as a member of the St. Louis Symphony Chorus. She has also performed with Winter Opera St. Louis, Union Avenue Opera, and the Southern Illinois Music Festival. In 2012, Ms. Abrams had the opportunity to be a sponsored young artist with Winter Opera St. Louis where she performed the role of Echo in Ariadne auf Naxos, covered Musetta in La Bohème, and performed in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical review: A Grand Night for Singing. Ms. Abrams has also performed with Opera Fort Collins, Loveland Opera Theater, Victorian Lyric Opera, and Opera Classica Europa in Bad Schwalbach, Germany as an apprentice artist. Additional operatic credits include: Gretel in Hansel and Gretel, Zweite Dame in Die Zauberflöte, Giannetta in L’Elisir d’Amore, Susanna and Barbarina in Le nozze di Figaro, and Fanny in Rossini’s La cambiale di matrimonio.

No stranger to the concert stage, Ms. Abrams has performed in numerous concerts, oratorios, and recitals throughout the United States. She has performed the mezzo-soprano solos in Mendelssohn’s Elijah, and Vivaldi’s Gloria. A passionate performer of Jewish music, Ms. Abrams was featured as a soloist in Martin Bresnick’s puppet opera, Der Signál, with the Hartford Independent Chamber Orchestra during the 10th Annual Celebration of Jewish Arts and Culture at Charter Oak Cultural Center in October of 2014.

As an active performer of art song, Ms. Abrams has collaborated with various musicians throughout the New England region to create diverse and accessible art song recitals. In the fall of 2014, Rachel and pianist Andrew King performed an art song recital throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts titled Songs of Land and Sea. This recital consisted of works by Schubert, Fauré, Rorem, and Rachmaninoff and was received with great acclaim. In April of 2015, Ms. Abrams and pianist Michael Korman presented a recital featuring the works of Schönberg, Ruth Schönthal, Previn, and Weill with the Maurice Greenberg Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Hartford.

In addition to being a passionate performer and collaborator, Rachel is a private music educator dedicated to the success of her students. Ms. Abrams maintains a private studio of voice students out of her home in West Hartford, Connecticut. In addition to her private teaching studio, Ms. Abrams teaches Musical Discovery courses at the Farmington Valley Academy Montessori in Avon and Introduction to Musical Theater and Group Voice classes at The Arts Place in Cheshire.

Before opening her own private studio in Connecticut, Ms. Abrams lived in St. Louis, Missouri where she taught throughout the region. While in Missouri, she served as an Adjunct Voice Instructor/Lecture Professor at East Central College and a Private Voice and Music Instructor at St. John's School of the Arts.

In addition to her teaching experience in the Missouri area, Rachel was a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Northern Colorado where she was an assistant instructor for Music Survey and Music and World Cultures classes.
