Viola is my primary instrument. I have played for approximately 15 years, and I've played in all styles of music, in orchestras, quartets, trios, pits, and everything in between. I've been teaching others how to play for 5 years now.
I can take a student from their first steps on a stringed instrument to preparing for college and professional auditions.
I'm a freelance musician and teacher in the Bay Area. I recently graduated from Sacramento State with my Bachelors of Music. I have been teaching for years, both privately and through the University system, it has given me training for teaching every stage from beginners with no experience to preparing young musicians for college auditions. No matter what you skill level, I can give you the tools to improve.
I began learning to play violin from the age of 7 and picked up the viola beginning at age 15. I played in the San Diego Youth Symphony in high school. I have been teaching violin and viola since 2012. I have greatly enjoyed both teaching music and learning about music pedagogy through the Suzuki Association of the Americas.

I offer a free thirty minute consultation. This is an opportunity for students to become acquainted with me and vice-versa prior to scheduling a lesson.
I have been described as “results oriented,” “a true musician,” “sensitive,” and “patient.” In fact, I am extremely impatient. However, compassion dominates my personality during lessons and, I daresay, during the rest of my life as well. I give my best, which means among so many other things, allowing each student the tempo of learning that is right for them.
My teaching is best suited for those people who have a desire to play as well as they can within the time constraints of their lives, or have a desire to be professionals and/or who strongly desire personal growth. This applies to children whose parents have for them a similar desire, though of course I teach more simply and in terms kids understand.
I have studied with the best of private instructors, including John Shelby Metcalf, Jr., violin protégé of D.C. Dounis;
I have been described as “results oriented” and as a “true musician.” I have been described as “patient” and “sensitive” but in fact, these are just manifestations of compassion. I am extremely impatient, but have learned the extraordinary results possible with slow practicing of fundamentals. My teaching is best suited for those people who have a desire to play as well as they can within the time constraints of their lives, or have a desire to be professionals and/or who strongly desire personal growth. This applies to children whose parents have for them a similar desire, though of course I teach more simply and in terms kids understand. I have studied with the best of private instructors in violin, piano, cello, composition, Schenker analysis, and conducting. I also have a BA ...
Hilary's primary instrument is the Viola. She chose it for its beautiful mellow sound and has found it to be rewarding in chamber music, and orchestras. Viola students have to learn a different set of skills - different posture and bow use in particular.
My passion is teaching violin so that my students enjoy freedom while playing. I use the fun of games to teach fundamental musical concepts. We have a lot of great silly time in lessons, but students often realize later how many things they picked up through these well-structured lessons. My studies have been in classical Violin and Viola, but we can incorporate jazz, pop and rock styles for those students who are interested. I teach violin and viola lessons to students of all ages. Private lessons include personalized, comprehensive lesson material including Violin and Viola technique, music reading and theory, improvisation, rhythm training, composition, history and aural skills. Include classical violin technique as well as jazz, blues, and popular music.
