Maria T.

Westwego, LA

I have experience teaching healthy, aerodynamic singing in many genres, including jazz, opera, pop, and broadway.

About Maria

Maria Elise T. is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana. She completed her Bachelor of Music degree while on music scholarship at Baylor University, and received a Master of Music in Vocal Performance at Louisiana State University, also with the reward of a music scholarship. While at Baylor, she studied with renowned voice teacher and pedagogue Dr. John Van Cura. She learned much of her teaching style during her time spent with Dr. Van Cura. She teaches a very thorough base for singing incorporating efficient, healthy breathing and posture. Maria uses her artistry and creativity to cater to t
he specific needs and learning specifications of each student, vocalists and pianists alike.

Maria spent 2 consecutive summers with Des Moines Metro Opera. She has performed many roles, most recently the Miss Dara with the Ninth Ward Opera. She has also performed Mimi in La Boheme, the title role in Vanessa, La Contessa in Le Nozze di Figaro, and the title roles in both Floyd’s Susannah and Puccini’s Suor Angelica.

Maria won 2nd Place at the Gulf Coast Regional Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in January 2010. Called by critics a “thoughtful, powerful and thrilling” singer, she has been awarded prizes in other competitions, including the Lois Alba Competition, NATS, Entergy Young Texas Artists’ Music Competition and Festival Note d’estate a Campolieto.

Maria is a wonderful teacher! She has a great personality and a quirky sense of humor that makes her personable and approachable. She works a lot on technique, specifically focusing on the breath. I recommend Maria because she a professional who finds the joy and love in teaching.

Maria is a joy to work with; I highly recommend taking her voice class! She creates an easygoing, fun, and instructive session that helps you understand methods for improving your vocal performance. I've had teachers in the past that simply worked with me on songs and "stage presence," however this is the first experience I've had where I'm confident that the lessons (posture, breathing, vocalizing, etc) will continue to transform my voice over time. Her fundamentals basically re-trained my voice and the impact was both immediate and long-lasting. I've recommended her to other family members and I believe they are also having similar positive experiences! If singing is your passion and you want to improve through a professional and pleasant experience - this is money well spent!

Denise B.

New Orleans, LA

Just like a piano, flute or violin, your voice is an instrument.
The purpose of voice lessons is to help you to develop a beautiful and dynamic singing voice and also to teach you to use your voice in a healthy age-appropriate way that will keep you singing for many years to come!
As your teacher, I want your lesson to be more than just singing through a few songs.
While what specifically happens during a voice lesson can vary greatly from student to student and from week to week, the overall structure of the lessons remains similar.
We will always start with some combination of warm-ups for your breath, body, and voice. Just as you wouldn't go running without first stretching and warming up your muscles, you don't want to start singing full songs without first getting your body and voice warmed up.
Warm-ups will also introduce you to new techniques for properly using your voice in a healthy and beautiful way.
After warm-ups, we will work on songs. Typically, you will sing ...

About Denise

I hold a Master's in Voice Performance degree from University of New Orleans and Bachelor of Science degree in Voice Performance from State Music Academy, Sofia, Bulgaria.
In 2001, I toured with International European Opera Company which performed numerous times in Denmark, France, Italy and USA.
I currently perform and teach in the New Orleans area and love to share my knowledge and experience with my students. There is so much more to performance then just beautiful vocalizing.....

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching is based on my own personal, classical training from Europe and North
America. Whether it's opera, oratorio, musical theater or pop-style singing that is desired, I believe that classical technique is an essential source of proper singing that can be used to train singers of all genres.
Lessons are tailored to the student's individual goals and abilities. Music history and theory, as well as vocalization, posture, breathing, diction, tone production, and general technique are incorporated into each lesson.
In addition, the students also participate in performance master classes and recitals, learning stage presence and concert etiquette.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music studio room, 2 full size keyboards, music stands, book shelf, desk, parking lots (free).

*** Specialties ***
Classical, Music Theater, Jazz

Ms Denise is the best teacher I've ever had, and the one I always wanted. I had another singing teacher prior to her, but I didn't feel like I was going anywhere. When you take lessons with Ms Denise you feel like you can succeed and reach your full potential, and more. She pushes you to perfection - not in a way that's stressful or aggressive, but in a way that's highly motivating and encouraging. In *one lesson*, I saw a dramatic improvement. She's upbeat, efficient, and her explanations are simple but precise. With excellent analogies and visualization techniques (and a gorgeous voice to demonstrate), you understand and catch onto everything she says with total ease. She's super committed and genuinely involved in your progress. I personally want to reach the stars, and Ms Denise is not only the provider of the ladder, but also my biggest cheerleader ♥

I have been working with Melanie for about 7 months now. She is honestly the best voice instructor I've ever worked with. Before working with her, I had no idea the things I was capable of. I had mostly just been singing classical music and I hadn't really branched out into other things. With Melanie I have started getting into more musical theater music and it has been so exciting. I've learned so much about my voice and how to have better stage presence. Melanie has been so encouraging and has helped me gain more confidence as a singer. I highly recommend her as a teacher!!

Destinie has helped me on a number of monologues and scenes in the last year. I recently was accepted to an arts school, so lately I've had to prepare a lot of monolouges and scenes for school. I've had Destinie help me prepare each one. She's a very talented artist and instructor. She's very patient and invests a great deal of time and effort into each student. I highly recommend using Destinie as a acting coach. She has helped me clean up my work and perform it with confidence.
