Five Reasons to Get Excited about Guitar Culture in St Louis

By Richard D. -St. Louis Guitar Teacher

Are you considering guitar lessons in St. Louis? Whether you are a beginner or have several years of experience under your belt, there are many reasons to get excited about the guitar scene in St. Louis. From a guitar player and true music enthusiast, here are 5 reasons to get excited about guitar culture in my hometown of St. Louis, Missouri.

  1. Chuck Berry Still Lives Here. Chuck Berry may have very well invented rock n’ roll. In a Rolling Stone article last April, Berry’s recurring monthly performance in St Louis was cited as one of their “40 Reasons to Get Excited about Music.”

  2. There’s an Open Mic 7 nights a Week. There’s no better place to keep your performance chops up and network with other musicians - and in the St Louis area, there’s one somewhere 7 nights a week. Some of my favorites include Venice Café, The Shanti, Llywelyn’s Pub, Iron Barley, Hartford Coffee Company and Whatsmokin' BBQ Restaurant.

  • St Louis is a Great City to Study Guitar. We have amazing music programs at Washington University, UMSL, and SLU as well as Central Visual/Performing Arts High School, and Midwest Guitar Building and Repair School. And of course there are many wonderful TakeLessons teachers who are ready to help you get started with your guitar lessons in St. Louis!

  • A Sense of Community. KDHX 88.1 is our community radio station and they play local St Louis music every single day. For a list of local performances at nearly every venue in St Louis, pick up a free copy of the RiverFront Times every Thursday.

  • Festivals! We have a wonderful variety of annual music festivals, such as the Big Muddy Blues Festival, Schwagstock, Mardi Gras, PointFest and the St. Louis Jazz and Heritage Festival.

  • Ready to get started? Sign up for guitar lessons in St. Louis today!

I am very passionate about the guitar and want my students to take lessons on their own terms, learning the things that inspire them to improve on the instrument. No one likes to be forced to learn things, therefore I try to facilitate lessons in a way that nurture the students interests and strengths and allow them to have fun with it, that's most important after all! Students who wish to challenge themselves and push the limits will also find that I can match the intensity however!

    About Cameron
My name is Cameron, I’m 27 years old, born and raised in Redwood City California and I’ve been playing guitar for 17 years. I have been performing and recording with various bands and I started teaching lessons about 10 years ago. I recently completed a year and a half of school at the Berklee College of Music in Boston studying guitar performance where I focused on jazz, latin, fusion, and a variety of styles, and since then have moved back home to pursue a career with my current band, Letters From The Fire.

My primary background is in rock/metal but I enjoy playing and teaching all styles and all skill sets. I am very passionate about the guitar, and I love to teach and consider myself very patient and open minded when it comes to my approach. I like for students to take lessons on their terms, learning the things that inspire them
and give them the drive to further themselves on the instrument and as people. Feel free to contact me, I would love to get some lessons going!

In the several years that I took lessons from Cameron he made me a much better guitar player and all-around musician. I definitely improved on my speed, technical skills, and theory; but he also helped me improve my musicality and my ear, which is so important in becoming a better musician. Cameron is extremely proficient in all genres, including rock, metal, blues, jazz, fusion, etc. He can play and teach anything. Not to mention the fact that he is a great guy and very patient and helpful with his students. I would highly recommend Cameron if you want to become a better musician at any level.

    Teaching Style
I believe first and foremost in supporting and developing what musically inspires a student’s decision to study and play music. In order to fully develop control, musicality and understanding of the music language, it is important to focus on several components including music theory (scale and harmonic structure/function and rhythm), style, ear-training, reading and performance skills.

    Expectations of Students
Like any aspect of life, consistency and patience are two very important qualities to posses when working towards a goal. The duration of each practice session is proportional to the level of the student. Learning how to practice efficiently with your instrument is key for adherence and success in obtaining your goals.

Let me help you learn the guitar in an easy to comprehend and faster than you could imagine study. You will learn to play a simple strumming and chordal pattern of a song that you choose to learn with in the first 2 lessons. My goal is to customize your lessons to your learning style and musical preferences. I've played guitar for over 30 years in the studio and touring all over the US, Mexico, and Central America. I can teach you how to play with seemingly effortless technique, Understanding strumming and fingerpicking patterns, how to create unforgettable guitar parts, how to improvise solos, how to make your guitar sing, and bring thunderous energy into your playing venues! I look forward to speaking with you soon

    About Shon
    My Name is Shon M.

I was raised in a family that has a tradition of passing the art of music down from generation to generation. I began playing at age 5 and I play 5 instruments professionally and 15 instruments in all. I studied music at Morehead State University and Musician’s Institute. I've been a touring and studio musician since the age of 16. I have been teaching music for more than 35 years. Many of my alumni have gone on to become professional musicians and teachers themselves. My approach to music education is somewhat unique, although it is gaining popularity in the mainstream of music education. I view music more like a language, as opposed to what some have called more of a data entry approach. Don't get me wrong, reading music is important and I do it everyday, but your music lessons should be teaching you how to play a
n instrument, not spending the majority of your time in learning to read right out of the gate. Yes there basics you must learn, but when you were a child, you didn't learn to read as you spoke your first words. You were learning to speak your language long before your learned your ABC's. There are many musicians with little formal training who play an instrument so well you'd swear you can see smoke coming from their fingers. Let me tell you, they weren't born that way. They learned to speak the language of music. The fact is, it's so much easier to learn to read music, after you have a basic understanding of how to speak the language. So say good bye to the frustrations of banging you head against the wall with the complexities of reading music and wondering how much longer you're going to have to endure this ongoing torture before you learn to play something cool, and say hello to having fun while learning how to play an instrument and the songs and styles you want to play...

You may have studied music before and given up because it was too difficult. Please know that's not uncommon. But I’m here to tell you, there is a better way! So if you've ever wanted to learn to play an instrument or sing, there is no better time than now.

My piano/songwriting lessons with Shon never got off the ground. On one occasion he showed up 30 minutes late and left me waiting forcing me to cancel due to another appointment. The following week he cancelled literally teo minutes before our session was due to begin, saying he was sick. Then the following week he left me waiting and didn't show up for our scheduled session at all. When I emailed him he said he is overwhelmed with his new work schedule, won't be able to do our lessons and that I should get a refund.

I had even agreed to change my day/time when he said it would be better for him, only to be let down.

What a complete waste of my time and energy. Incredibly unprofessional and inconsiderate conduct.

Chris was my favorite teacher by far this year. I actually went to about 6 different teachers in town.
But none of them were giving me the info I was looking for most of them seemed bored. But Chris is my teacher for life he made everything fun, easy
And actually gave me absolutely everything i was looking for. If there was a certain song part I wanted to learn he would either know it already. Or would learn it for me specifically then teach me in a way that was easier than say a youtube video. He knows like hundreds of songs off the top of his head... Crazy!
