Blues and rock guitar

***Experience***

I have played rock and blues guitar for 30 years. I grew up with the Beatles and Rolling Stones, but now play in the Albert King, Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton blues styles. I know most rock, blues, folk and jazz styles with some knowledge of country and classical.

I have been the rhythm, lead or bass guitar player in six bands spanning 30 years. My current band is West of the Blues.

I was mentored by Mike Bruce. Mike was BB King’s, Bobby Blue Bland’s and Bob Seger’s lead guitar player for many years. He has played with everyone from Eric Clapton to Janet Jackson.

During the Mike Bruce period my band opened for him almost everywhere. He became my mentor and guitar teacher and only then did I start learning how to play the instrument that initially looked easy.

I have taught Rock Band and Guitar in Denver Public Schools for the past four years.

I have taught guitar and bass informally for about 14 years and our Littleton based lesson studio has been in operation for eight years with lessons taught more formally.

I also am the founder of and current teacher at the School of Blues Colorado. Additionally I am the Band Director for 3 of the School of Blues bands.

I can teach students of any age or skill level in all styles, but my particular area of specialty is in jazz, country, folk, bluegrass and blues.

A unique specialty of mine is in Travis Picking (using a thumb pick and two fingers to pick bass lines, chords and melody all at once).

About Scott
"a masterful guitarist -- really, a total whiz of a rare order."
--Hudson Valley Almanac Weekly

"a force to be reckoned with... sophisticated chord voicings, complex fingerpicking patterns, and a flurry of blues, jazz, and folk-inflected riffs performed with a ringing acoustic tone and an undeniable rhythmic drive."
--Wired.com

Scott is an internationally touring guitarist and songwriter based in Philadelphia. In addition to his work as an in-demand sideman for various artists and bands around the country, Scott is also an accomplished bandleader and composer with four acclaimed releases under his belt over the last ten years.

As a guitarist, Scott brings a modern, technical approach to traditional American styles - jazz, bluegrass, country blues, western swing and chick'n pick'n country guitar - but as a songwriter, he gravi
tates toward straightforward rock, blues, and folk.

Scott's guitar playing and songwriting has landed him features from American Songwriter, CMT, and more. He holds a BFA in Studio/Composition, with a minor in Jazz Performance, from SUNY Purchase in Purchase, NY.

Scott is currently on faculty in the Music Industry department at Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ.

*** Lesson Details ***

When studying with Scott, students can expect a comfortable and fun atmosphere that promotes experimentation and positive reinforcement. Employing a curriculum that is equal parts formal technique and informal playing of the student's favorite music, Scott makes every lesson engaging and exciting for his students.

After 3 to 6 months studying with Scott, beginners should expect to be able to play many of their favorite songs, have a firm grasp on basic scales, chords, theory and sight reading, and can even begin writing their own songs and improvising solos!

If you're already an intermediate/advanced player, Scott will push you to find your unique voice on the guitar and tap into advanced techniques and approaches that will help you fully realize all that the guitar has to offer.

Lessons are tailored to each individual student's particular interests and abilities. Wherever you want to take your guitar playing, Scott will get you there and beyond!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will bring an acoustic guitar with me. My student must only have a guitar of their own of any kind. If it's electric, an amp is preferable, but not necessary.

*** Specialties ***
Music, Guitar, Bass, Theory, Song Writing, Composition, Improvisation, Sight Reading, Advanced Harmonic and Rhythmic Concepts, Group Playing
I am schooled in Jazz, but have a passion for all styles, including rock, blues, country, funk, folk, punk, and world music.

Scott is not only an amazing guitarist, but he is a superb teacher. Kind, supportive, and has an uncanny ability to break-down difficult pickings and strums into understandable and easy to follow directions. Most importantly, very patient. I was self-taught in the 70s when everyone picked up a guitar, stopped as an adult and am now re-starting it again after 30 years-and enjoying every moment. Scott is able to teach any type of music or song and intuitively understands and teaches the guitar style that the student would like to learn. Any student who studies with Scott should consider themselves fortunate. Not only does he know his stuff, he is passionate about music and passing on this musical knowledge to his students.

If you are brand-new to the guitar, I'd love to jump right in and teach you a fun song right away during your first lesson. I like making this as fun as possible while you're learning a lot about the guitar. If you already know how to play, I'd like to help you gain a better understanding of how the guitar applies to basic music theory. I want to help you truly gain your independence as a guitar player. In my opinion, there are only two things that really matter when learning how to play the guitar: 1) Having fun and 2) Learning a lot. That's what I hope that you can attain by learning from me.

About Kevin
Hello! My name is Kevin, and I am looking forward to teaching you everything I know about music! I've been singing at Walt Disney World for over 23 years (and I still am currently) with the Voices of Liberty, the Dapper Dans of Main Street, and Four For A Dollar. I have a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Penn State University. Even more than singing, playing the guitar, arranging for a cappella, and playing piano, I love to teach! Ever since I was a sophomore in high school, I've wanted to be a teacher of music in various capacities. My favorite aspect of teaching several private students each week is that every individual student has a different story: What is it that you want to accomplish? Would you like to sing, play piano, or play guitar? Would you like training in music theory? Do you want to eventually have a career in m
usic? Will this be a hobby for you? Whatever your goals are, I am excited to know your story.

Brooklyn-based private music teacher operating in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Over a decade of experience teaching a broad range of styles to students of all ages and backgrounds. Strong focus on the individual student's personal interests and goals. Master's degree in music with years of experience touring globally and recording for both major and indie labels.
Whether you're looking to begin your or your child's guitar learning experience, or take your playing to the next level, it's my passion to get students playing the music they want to play, right from the beginning!

About Ken
A recent transplant to the Park Slope area, I'm a composer and multi-instrumentalist originally from Raleigh, North Carolina. Prior to receiving my master's degree in composition from Mannes (The New School), I was the lead guitarist in the indie rock band Annuals. As part of this group I signed with two major record labels, appeared on national television programs such as Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and performed globally both on tour and at prominent festivals such as Bonnaroo, Coachella, Glastonbury (England), and Roskilde (Denmark).

I have been teaching private music lessons for twelve years, both freelance and as part of various organizations. My approach to teaching is highly dynamic—I don't use the same method with every student and I have no stylistic prejudices or an agenda to push. I approach each student as an individual
, tailoring lesson plans to suit their personal goals and interests. I have experience playing and teaching an extensive range of styles including pop, rock, jazz, country, metal, and classical. One of my main goals is to foster a sense of musical understanding with every student so that they may learn to combine technical, theoretical, and aural skills into a unified whole.

Most students want to learn to play songs they know and love. To that end, I get students playing the music they want to play right from the beginning, often through personally crafted arrangements of songs/pieces of the student's choosing, specifically tailored to their current skill level. This way, technical and theoretical skills are learned through direct experience with actual music, and only very rarely through rote exercise.

For more advanced players, I offer an array of strategies designed to take your playing to the next level. I find that the most common shortcomings of advanced players are conceptual. The technical skills are there but the level of conceptual and theoretical understanding has hit a wall. Many players find themselves playing the same chord shapes, melodic patterns, and harmonic progressions over and over again. I've had much success over the years in getting advanced students out of this rut and helping open up new pathways for exploration in both improvisation and composition.

I've been playing off and on for 15 years and am mostly self taught. I knew what I wanted to learn but was having trouble figuring it out on my own. In the first lesson Ken was able to zero in on what I want to learn and the best way to go about it. In three lessons I feel that I understand the guitar so much more than I have in the past 15 years of playing. Not only from a technical standpoint, but also in a "feel" sense. On my own I could learn all the scales, chords, and songs I wanted, but Ken has helped me to make sense of everything and use these skills to become a better player all around.

Ken is an outstanding musician/composer who I have had the privilege of taking lessons from for years up until I moved to Los Angeles to pursue a music production career. My favorite part about Ken is his perceptiveness in teaching. He can always tell when i am not understanding something, and he will address it before I have to say "I don't get it." Which would keep my confidence level up during the lesson. He is also EXTREMELY versatile in his musical ability. I have come to him with everything from death metal, to impressionist classical, to electronica and he never skips a beat. He is very passionate about music, which transfers to his students easily due to his easy going nature, and natural skill for teaching. It is no exaggeration in my mind to say he is the best musician I have ever known personally. On top of all of this, Ken is an incredible song writer, and composer.... He does it all!

I believe that learning music should be as fun and inspiring as it can be to play. We all have a vast wellspring of creative energy within us, and the goal of the relationship between the student and the teacher is to help nurture and develop that latent talent. For this reason, my approach to teaching music is highly individualized. I start out with the premise that the student has unique gifts and my job is to help them discover what those are, and develop and refine them in order to make beautiful and deeply satisfying music, through whatever instrument and in whatever style they are drawn towards.

Depending on one's starting level of experience, some basic exercises will be assigned to develop core skills, with increasing levels of technical challenge and complexity. Elements of music theory will be woven into practical lessons. Students will have the choice to incorporate material from popular and familiar music into their studies, and as they progress they will be encouraged to

About Sean
I began teaching acoustic guitar and voice lessons in 1984, also offering harmonium and tabla lessons a few years later. Some of my students have approached music mainly for personal enjoyment and deepening their self-identity, while others have used the skills they learned in their careers.

I've found that in order to be a successful teacher, I must be patient and compassionate, and try to always put myself in the shoes of a learner. I feel my greatest teaching strengths come from listening to my students, as well as drawing from my experience as a singer-songwriter and fingerstyle guitarist.

I'm grateful for my exposure to the music of different cultures, especially the fascinating polyrhythms of traditional African drumming and the deeply moving melodies of Indian Classical music. I had the good fortune to study these disciplines int
ensively with Master Teachers during my time at Dartmouth College, at Wesleyan University, and through independent studies in India. My teacher training at Pacific Oaks College further deepened my appreciation of cultural diversity as well as my sensitivity to different learning styles.

This experience has enriched my own compositions, as well as my ability to connect with learners from diverse cultural backgrounds, and to help guide people in developing a personal style free from artificial boundaries of genre.

Currently, I'm working on recording an album of original songs based on the poetry of Rumi, Hafiz and other mystics.

I began as a brand new student with no background concerning the guitar but do have a background in voice and instrumental music (piano and saxophone) as a youth. As a subject matter resource, Tim is an individual that is exceptionally knowledgeable. He has excellent experience in the world of guitars: from the point of view as a luthier, to knowing and understanding the intricacies of a stringed instrument, to having a superb ability as as teacher. As an individual, Tim's personality is one that comfortably guides students and is supportive of them. And, his teaching style is all done with good sense of humor. I structure lessons based on what your needs are as a student, and continually adjust the pace of instruction and new material to help you progress quickly without becoming overwhelmed. I like to focus on studying and playing songs that you want to learn, in whatever style you choose. I also use a number of books for different exercises that I think will be useful in achieving your goals. When you are ready, you can practice performance by recording songs at my studio.

I will help you find your individual musical style through exploring the things you want to learn, and I always invite you to ask why I am teaching you a specific concept. My lessons will always be pointed toward reaching your specific goals so you can become the musician you want to be.

About Stephen
Music seems like it has always been apart of my life. From an early age in elementary school I tried several instruments, from horns and wind instruments to drums. I finally landed on guitar when I turned 9 years old and never turned back. My first experience teaching was in middle school, where I wanted to be in a band but no one else in the class knew how to play guitar or drums. So I decided to teach 3 of my friends how to play guitar, bass and drums to start my first band. I’ve been playing and teaching along the way ever since.

I customize lessons for every student, use various books for teaching and create my own learning materials for the students to study and practice from. I help the student establish goals and show them the plan/curriculum I create for them based on those goals. I am very friendly and patient and I love ans
wering students’ questions.

I teach out of my home recording studio, at the student’s home, or online. I use the recording studio for lessons, creating backing tracks for the students to play along to or solo over. I also record some of the exercises and play them back for students so they can hear for themselves when I explain a concept or correct an error.

My goal for lessons: To help my students achieve their musical goals as fast as possible. To develop their own style, identify and eliminate bad habits, and encourage good ones. In less than 6 months the student will be able to play simple songs, know the theory behind the chords, read the chords charts, and begin to read sheet music.

For intermediate lessons, I like to focus on more in depth looks at theory, and the application of theory. I enjoy analyzing songs with students and picking apart what makes them great. I also, when teaching in my studio, like to spend time recording with the students, creating original songs, and recreating popular songs.

A typical lesson: 10-15 minutes of warm up and review, 10-15 minutes of new material, theory, or song study. Longer lessons include more playing time, and more time to explore questions. I encourage my students not to let the learning stop when the lessons stop, but to look up articles and watch as many videos as they can, and bring lots of questions to every lesson.

I like to teach anyone 5 years old and above who wants to learn and become a better musician!

I've recently started taking lessons from Stephen to help improve my songwriting abilities and have to say, he's a pretty cool guy (and a good instructor). I've been playing guitar for most of my life but, for a long time, never devoted any time to creating something of my own. After trying songwriting on my own for a bit, I decided to see if I could give my skills a little bit of a boost by working with a music teacher. Upon the recommendation of a family friend, I decided to give Stephen a try.

Over the last few lessons, he's gotten me back into harmonic analysis (a skill that I tucked away after stopping my music theory studies ages ago). Our lessons are a mixture of looking at the structure of existing pieces, as well as working on my own songwriting. He's been immensely helpful in understanding how the structure of piece, as well as its chords and melodies, contribute to its overall sound. This has helped my songwriting immensely, as I feel that I am no longer wandering around aimlessly -- rather, I at least have a rough sense of direction in terms of where I would like a piece of music to go. Fully getting there is another story, but I'm sure that will come with practice.

In addition to being a good instructor, Stephen is a good dude with a great attitude. He's always patient and positive and encourages learning through experimentation. I highly recommend him.
