I have experience in teaching every level of student from beginning to advanced. I am a big believer in teaching the fundamentals. I spend much time working on tone and technique with my students as this leads to much success when it comes to specializing in both classical and jazz playing. I give students much freedom as to what they want to work on as this allows students to be excited about taking lessons. After all, music is supposed to be fun!

I'm a saxophone teacher and I also teach flute, clarinet, and piano as well as jazz improvisation and other instruments such as bass and drums from time to time. Saxophone is my primary instrument and I fell in love with playing it at an early age.
I've been playing for about 25 years now! I'm well versed in any style you can imagine including jazz, classical, funk, blues, or anything else you can think of! I can also teach you how to improvise and play solos over chord changes or quickly come up with parts on the fly if you're playing in a band or are interested in writing. If you're interested in just getting the basics down, I can help with that too. I remember what it was like getting started in school band and some methods that you can use to get comfortable on the horn pretty quickly and just playing some music! I'd love to hear what kind of music you're into as well- it's more fun for everyone involved if we can incorporate some of that into the lessons too!

About Joshua
I have been playing music since I was a kid. I started out in church, then went on to play in school band and started gigging here and there. I just loved playing from the beginning and wanted to learn how to play improvised solos. There was just some magic in being able to make up what you play on

Bob is a talented, accomplished performer who shares his in-depth professional experience and broad knowledge of music history and culture to educate and motivate. During lessons, Bob has been known to relay stories from classical-era musicians’ lives, play passages from 1930s to current jazz musicians, and impart lessons from his own performance experiences. I'm so often amazed that he has yet another fascinating example or story to illuminate a topic and provide new understanding of a concept.
Bob is a learner-centric teacher who provides creative, deliberate plans and steps to move forward, but will change course if needed to enhance success. Since I started the saxophone later in life, he often mentions the “unique strengths of adult learners” and relates adult life-knowledge to learning musical concepts. Additionally, I have long struggled with confidence in music-making and Bob has come up with creative solutions to help me overcome my own “getting in the way” of music making while keeping me on task. Along the way he has been understanding, kind, and supremely patient while working through this challenge with me.
Bob brings a keen intellect, good sense of humor, and a relaxed and fun teaching style to his lessons. I feel fortunate to have an expert and steadfast guide who encourages me to explore and have fun with music while helping me gain knowledge and skills. Do yourself a favor and call Bob to guide you on your own musical journey.

Learning how to play saxophone starts with the right equipment--namely, a quality neck strap! Read on for some helpful advice from Brookings, SD teacher Carl S... The saxophone is a unique instrument for many reasons. One example is that the saxophone is the only band instrument that uses a neck strap. Unfortunately, the neck strap is often the most overlooked aspect of playing the instrument. One of the first things that I stress to a new student is the importance of the neck str …
