I have been teaching piano for over twenty years. I specialize in classical and pop. I love teaching babies and young children but I teach all ages. Piano is the hardest instrument. I try to make every lesson fun while still providing structure and a little bit of strictness. I use the Mark Nevin, Schaum, and Little Mozart series. I have tons of music to share for students that need to branch out and don't know what to play. Piano is my passion. I love sharing my love for this instrument with others.

*** Lesson Details ***
In my opinion, piano is the hardest instrument to learn but the most rewarding. If you can play piano you can pretty much play any instrument. I believe that a piano lesson should be fun. I'm a strict teacher with a smile and a giggle. I push my students to greatness while helping the
m love the piano through the good times and the bad. I'm a very encouraging but honest teacher. I compliment when warranted and I assess not so good performances in an honest but encouraging manner. I always let a student know that though their performance was not their best, they can and will improve. It's always only a matter of time. I use the Schaum and Nevin series depending on the student's personality. I teach Classical and Pop Music. It's important for a student to learn the Classics just as important as it is for them to play things they like. I find the happy balance between the two. I teach Beginning to Intermediate levels. I also like to incorporate Music theory into the lessons because understanding the mechanics of Music helps make playing and creating Music much easier to accomplish. A typical lesson will start off with a hand drill warm up. We then will move on to the lesson book and repertoire. Theory will be assigned as homework. I look it over at the beginning of the lesson and discuss it and answer any questions in the last five minutes of class. Baby lessons go as followed: 15 mins. of play time and 15 mins of Music theory. I like to keep structure in my lessons but sprinkle a little joy and laughter to keep the atmosphere light. It makes for a much more attentive Piano student.

Zachary B.

A native of Charlotte, NC, Zachary began his musical career as a tuba player and jazz bass guitarist. While attending The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Zachary began singing in various vocal groups on campus and developed his love for the singing voice. With encouragement from the music faculty, Zachary began training as an operatic baritone while at UNC. While attending UNC, Zachary was awarded both the Fischer Scholarship in Voice and the Tony McDowell Voice Scholarship. His singing brought him to Boston in the summer of 2010 to begin study at The Boston Conservatory. While performing various opera roles and attending summer programs, Zachary also opened his private studio and taught at a local music academy.

Baritone Zachary B. is quickly establishing himself as an active operatic performer. Equally at home on the recital stage, his versatile lyric baritone voice fits a wide range of repertoire and styles. A graduate of The Boston Conservatory, Zachary has performed roles like the titular role in Don Giovanni, Ramiro in L'Heure Espagnole, L'horloge comtoise in L'Enfant et les sortileges, Pooh-Bah in The Mikado, and Bob in The Old Maid and the Thief.

Starting in February 2013, Zachary will also be available through TakeLessons for online instruction. Lessons will still focus on energy, breath, and solid technique, so please contact him if you think this venue of instruction will be a good fit!

Regardless of your background, I believe in making lessons fun, encouraging, and accessible. This means that my work with you will, by nature, be incredibly personal and always formulated for your specific musical goals. I will constantly strive to make sure you are comfortable in our work together as we explore singing, speaking, and music theory.

I believe every singing or speaking voice can benefit from a foundation in classical vocal technique. Whether you prefer to learn through singing songs or through various exercises, I can customize our lesson plan to fit your needs. Therefore, I provide a fun and engaging lesson atmosphere, but you need to bring your best as well! We will both be happier with the process if we are equally invested in your growth. We will start with something you already know (an aria, vocal exercise, or excerpt from a song) and work toward singing in your preferred vocal style. For example, classical singers will build their knowledge of English, German, Italian, and French diction and song styles. Additionally, I will always respect and include my student's musical interests.

Along the way, I am happy to address basic music theory ideas. If you prefer, we can also spend additional time reviewing and learning those principles to enrich your musical experience. I will always provide different exercises and ideas to keep your brain active in the singing process.

I believe in whole body, whole spirit singing. As a performer, I employ a variety of holistic exercises and theories to develop my own voice, such as basic Alexander Technique principles, voice therapy techniques, a variety of pedagogical palates, and energy work. If these sorts of things interest you, I am more than happy to incorporate them into our lessons. My personal results with those practices have been incredible, so I am always eager to share.

My personality is outgoing and energetic, so I bring that sort of atmosphere to a lesson. I expect preparedness and readiness on your part to maximize our work together. Piano was my first instrument as a child and I never stopped loving it. I have been teaching it for the last 5 years and hope to instill that same love for music the way my piano teacher did for me! Sheila's interest in music began at the age of seven when she began private instruction in classical piano, and by the age of ten, she began playing the flute. Sheila received her Bachelor of Music with a degree in Music Education from the University of Redlands, where she studied flute with Sara Andon. There, she performed in the university's Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and Orchestra. During her third year at university, she studied abroad at the Zoltan Kodaly Pedagogical Institute of Music in Kecskemet, Hungary.

Sheila has performed in many different venues around the world such as Tivoli Gardens in Denmark, the Edinburgh Trade Center in Scotland, the Sydney Opera House in Australia, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the Greek Theater in Los Angeles and the Valley Performing Arts Center in Northridge, CA.

*** Lesson Details ***
My goal as a music educator is to foster excellence in the art of music through private instruction. I have worked with students of all ages ranging from 5 to older adults.

In my studio, students will learn to read music and have a well rounded music education. This means that we will work on a variety of things such as music theory, music history, and a wide range of repertoire (from Beethoven to the Beatles!) While I have high expectations for my students, I do my best to keep the lessons relaxed and lighthearted. My hope is that the student is always engaged and interested during lessons.

My three expectations:

1. Come prepared both mentally and physically (this is especially important for flutists-- make sure to warm up prior to the lesson!)

2. Don't be afraid to ask questions and make mistakes. This is non-threatening territory, I'm here to guide you and help you. Remember that mistakes happen, we're human. Just make sure that you learn from those mistakes so as not to make the same ones and grow from each experience.

3. For parents-- BE INVOLVED! I can't tell you how often I've seen younger students excel when their parents were proactive in the experience. This means encouraging them to practice, coming up with a rewards system, and sometimes sitting in on the lesson to take notes so that you can work on what we did during the lesson at home together. It's difficult for music teachers to compete with iPads, Playstations and television, so let's get creative together!

*** Required Materials ***
Flute students must own a well maintained flute, as an instrument that is out of adjustment causes frustration and can initiate bad habits. In addition, the student must also have a metronome and tuner, a music stand, flute repertoire, and an assignment book for me to write down each week's assignments.

Piano students must have a working acoustic piano or digital piano in their home for piano lessons. The student must also have a metronome, piano repertoire, and an assignment book for each week's assignments.

I am writing this review for people like me to read :)

When I first started taking singing lessons, I thought there was no way I could really ever be able to sing. Cindy has helped me to do things that I didn't think possible - sing in key, sing different notes, and relax and enjoy it. I would give her 6 stars if I could!

Cindy is no doubt the ONE when it comes to piano and voice lessons. I have had piano and vocal lessons with other previous instructors in the past, but often felt discouraged, misunderstood and frustrated. However, Cindy literally brought my passion for piano and singing back to life! She's extremely knowledgeable and passionate in her expertise, and she's FUN! I look forward to each and every lesson. About Anabelle
When did you begin playing [instrument], and why?:

I've been singing since I was about 8. I began to play piano when I was a teenager, because many of my classmates were very skilled at the piano, and I became inspired to be like them.

What are your personal goals as a musician?:

I love opera, and my goal is to compose my own. I plan on working closely with the librettist, since I'm a poet as well.

Do you have a memory of a time when a musical concept or technique really clicked? Something you'll remember forever?:

I never knew what perfect pitch was until I was much older. I also didn't realize I had perfect pitch until a professor at an audition made me aware of my ability. Since then, it's become a wonderful tool.

What is your favorite piece of advice from one of your past (or current) teachers?:

Being compassion
ate with a student will allow them to fearlessly open up to their potentials.

What was your most challenging moment learning an instrument?:

In the winter months, my body feels tight and cold, and sometimes this causes tension during playing or singing. That's why to me it's important to work in a warm environment, do proper daily stretching, and have a healthy lifestyle (good diet, exercise, proper sleep).

What is your biggest musical achievement?:

Composing a fugue.

Favorite thing about teaching?:

I love sharing my passion for music with other human beings.

What is a piece of advice you would like to share with anyone learning music?:

About Anabelle...

Anabelle has been involved with sounds and music from an early age. Her greatest forte is her hearing. When she was young, people thought she might become a voice actor, because her skill at replicating voices was quite apparent. Still, she loved to sing and had been regularly involved in choirs. She dabbled in violin in the fifth grade, but she didn't feel a "click." Without despairing, she tried her luck with piano and felt instantly in sync. She knew this was the right instrument for her. During her piano studies, she continued to work on her voice. In addition, she studied the workings of a sound board, and was head sound chief at her high school. At the college level, she began to pursue composition, while still continuing with piano and vocal studies. She holds an A.A. with a music focus (piano performance), a B.M. in music theory, and a M.M in music education from Boston University. She has been teaching music since 2006 and has worked with a wide range of ages and various group sizes. Her joy is working with people in a field that she is passionate about. Her interests include music (jazz, classical, opera, new age), ballet, composition, yoga, meditation, going to the gym, hiking and camping, scuba-diving, sailing,Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture, cooking and baking, film-editing, sound engineering, poetry, reading good books, building websites, and watching documentaries.

Suvida gave lessons to my 4 year old son at UT. I was nervous at first because they were his very first lessons in piano, but Suvida had a calm and gentle approach, and my son liked her immediately. She had a lot of patience and had ways of teaching him that we're relatable for his age and level of understanding. I would definitely recommend her lessons!

Suvida teaches my 10-year old, and I initially turned to Suvida because my daughter's previous teacher, whom we had for 3 years, was painfully inadequate. I was chatting with Suvida about things that bothered me as being improper techniques, though I myself had only taken piano lessons for 1 year as a child. Suvida's "horror" by what I detailed, and then her launching into all that my daughter should've been able to achieve after 3 years of lessons, convinced me that we needed her as our teacher!
Her attention to details, which as a child violinist of 11 years myself, is something that I surely appreciate! And I can already see the vast improvement in my daughter, after only one year of lessons with her! Thank you, Suvida!

Suvida has been giving my 7-year old piano lessons. She is excellent with children, and has a positive and kind manner. She makes the lessons interesting to children in different ways, for instance, getting them to use their bodies to understand concepts, like clapping to count out beats. I highly recommend her as a music teacher.

Learning how to play piano is not nearly as important as learning how to learn to play piano. What I'm saying is almost all of the piano playing that you will do to get better will be done without a teacher, however, spending time to learn the tools and techniques necessary to make you a productive, disciplined learner capable of critical thought will carry you much farther!

I am a professionally trained percussionist, guitarist, and sound-engineer. I graduated from Fort Hays State University with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Music Technology, and a Masters of Professional Studies in Music Performance.

I am great with young or beginning students. I tailor each lesson to fit the students interests, as well as give them a strong general music foundation to carry them through their musical endeavors! I have worked with many students in a variety of styles, including rock, finger-picking, jazz, song-writing and country.

I have been giving lessons to students of all ages in percussion, guitar, electric bass, and beginner piano for about 4 years. I taught one of the guitar studios at FHSU, as well as some percussion students as part of my graduate assistantship. I am passionate about helping students of al
l ages reach their musical goals and have fun while doing it!

I love to perform with other musicians! I have participated in many musical ensembles while at FHSU, including both jazz ensembles, both concert bands, marching band, pep band, both choirs, and the percussion ensemble. I have also been a wedding DJ for the past four years, and a radio station manager for the last two years. I sit in with a small jazz quartet when I am available and I frequently play with a country band around northeastern Kansas.

I truly love teaching one-on-one lessons. I especially love working with beginners so I can start them off on the right path!

The lessons began by discovering what level I was at currently at and working from that point forward. Dexterity exercises along with creativity training really moved me forward. I am so blessed to have worked with him! He really knows his stuff!

I took bass lessons from Cameron through a college class. In just one semester (one lesson a week) I learned a years worth of music theory. Cameron explained it in a way that made sense. I learned a lot in the time taking lessons. Also became more confident in my playing because I learned about scales and many other aspects that help with playing around on the frets. Cameron is a great teacher and I would recommend to anyone!

Cameron is an amazing instructor. I started off taking drum classes from him as a part of his graduate work, and enjoyed the classes so much I decided to take them privately. Mr. Shoemaker has a good way of figuring out where people are at with their skill level and giving them goals and tips to help them improve. I consider it an honor to have taken classes from him.
