Anna has been an amazing teacher, I've learned so much from her. She's detailed and precise in her instruction. She has been a great help!

Anna is amazing! For the past two years, she has provided individual cello instruction to our 10th grader. She is patient, kind, and easily able to share her knowledge and skills with her students. Under her guidance he has improved his technique and gained valuable experience at his recitals. She has also helped him prepare pieces for his auditions at CCA and SDYS. Highly recommend!

Anna is a wonderful teacher. She allows me as a parent (and encourages) to attend lessons so i can be her proxy during the week to reinforce lessons taught; this helps with continuous week to week progress. She demands a lot of my child in terms of warm-ups drills, site reading, rhythm, intonation, and sound. She is rigorous in terms of proper technique, training, and demands playing "beautifully" (with emotion). When things get too tough she takes a step back and gets back to the basics, focusing on advancing through a piece note by note, measure by measure. The end result is fantastic and often get featured in concert performances several times a year. My child has grown tremendously since starting with Ms. Anna; he had a previous teacher and picked up a lot of bad habits that we had to engineer out. He now is playing at a high level as a 10 year old having been with Ms. Anna for ~2 years. He has grown through each piece, taking his time. There is no pressure to move onto new pieces until each piece has been mastered. His maturity, self-confidence and work ethic have all grown because of cello. It has been a tremendous pleasure to learn from Ms. Anna, not to mention see her perform in the San Diego symphony. She is a true professional who understands how to work with kids but also pull the best out of them!

I love music theory. I once read a comment on an online discussion board, in which someone basically said that music theory is to music what grammar is to English. I totally agree. It is one thing to know how to read and play music and it is another to have a more in depth understanding of the rules of written music. Music theory helps you to know why certain sounds sound the way they do and how to produce them.

If you're an aspiring composer, music theory is definitely for you! If you sing in a choir or play in an orchestra, music theory is for you too! It will enhance your ability to read musical scores with greater ease and greater speed.

If you're a dedicated, determined student who wants to enhance your ability to read and/or create music, I welcome you to book a lesson with me. :)

About Naomi

I have been playing the piano for 14 years. I love musical composition and have written ~40 + Christian songs. Since I love musical composition, naturally I also love music theory-something that has helped me to expand my "musical toolkit" of ideas. I am able to compose in several genres. Most o

I have really enjoyed taking piano playing lessons with Naomi. Working with her, I am learning to practice and play from written music and even surprising myself along the way. Still, I feel the best is to come!

I started working with Naomi just a few months ago and I already feel that she is one of the most inspiring teachers that I have ever had. She has a real joy for music and is an enthusiastic instructor. She has really taken the time to 'go into the weeds' with me and patiently answers all of my questions about music theory. I had tried other teachers in the past, but Naomi is careful to keep the content in step with my learning pace.

I have really appreciated her instruction.

Improve Your Guitar Groove

Lessons and coaching to aspiring guitarists (Jazz, Latin, Reggae, Classical)

What makes my lessons unique?

While everyone learns in their own way, most people tend to learn in certain ways best.

While very much a student of music/guitar, I believe I can help a lot of folks with their own musical journey and learning process!

With over 200 articles & 50 videos on learning guitar and music, playing guitar for 30+ years, gigging for over 15+ years, and have composed/created/recorded music in a variety of styles, I can help many aspiring guitarists.

Besides the guitar, I am currently learning drums, congas, bass, piano, violin, viola, cello, bass flute, and singing. In other words, while I l started learning guitar along time ago, I am very familiar with many aspects of the musical learning process!

For aspiring jazz guitarists:
I focus on improving groove (as well as theory, technique, improv, repertoire, ear training). With groove, you'll really start

If you are in need of a great music teacher, Patricio is your guy. He is well versed in many areas of the music field (Music theory, songwriting, pro tools software, the list goes on). I've been working with Patricio for several years now and can't thank him enough for how much he has helped me be able to record and produce my own music using Pro Tools and Logic Pro. My favorite thing about Patricio's teaching style is that he incorporates all the different fields so you receive a more realistic and well rounded education. And on top of it, he is a very kind and encouraging teacher. You will not be disappointed.
Carlos
Patricio is the type of teacher that spends time making sure you understand the theory of music instead of just jumping to play the instrument. He knows how to integrate theory into his lessons so that everything make more sense when playing the instrument. He is very knowledgeable about music which makes the experience of learning enjoyable and fun. I had never touched a guitar before I started taking acoustic guitar lessons from Patricio, and he is gradually teaching me the basics with a lot of patience. I am still a beginner, but one of the reasons that I am still motivated to learn is because Patricio is so inspirational. I leave each lesson wanting to learn and practice more. In order to learn something new, you have to be inspired, and Patricio knows how to inspire people to learn.

"I had been looking for a private piano teacher for the longest time! I tried numerous times to pick it up; once with a teacher at a musical School but I was not really clicking with the teacher, tried to teach myself but I can't read the notes, and I've messed around with the electronic keyboard that has light up keys to assist you. None worked, so finding Fawn was a dream come true! She has straightened out all my messes and I have grown and playing better than I ever have before and also reading music now! Thank you Fawn! I look forward to more lessons!"

"I have been learning from Chaul for the past two months. She is a very supportive and patient teacher. I was a complete beginner when I first started, but after one to two weeks, I can play easy tunes like Twinkle Twinkle. Whenever I have any questions regarding the violin, she can give me helpful solutions. When I have lessons with her, I can immediately know where I need to improve and gain a few extra tips on violin playing.

I would highly recommend Chaul to you (people who are browsing on Takelessons)!"

5 Reasons Why Hanon Exercises are Useless

Are Hanon exercises really effective at teaching piano students? Below, piano teacher James F. shares five reasons why he believes Hanon exercises aren't as useful as many think... A lot of piano teachers swear by the old familiar Hanon exercises as a great way of teaching technique to their students. I strongly disagree. I’m familiar with a lot of different ways of developing piano technique, and I think that Hanon is among the least efficient. Why? Below I’ve provided fiv …

5 Ukulele Strumming Patterns You Should Know

One of the most iconic sounds in music is the sound of a ukulele strumming patterns. It automatically conjures up in one’s mind scenes of a beach in Hawaii (which happens to be the title of an amazing Ukulele song by Ziggy Marley, but we’ll get to that) with its tiki huts, hula skirts, and lei. It’s most likely what brought you to want to learn the ukulele in first place. And this technique, strumming, is one of the first techniques you need to master in order to bring your Ukulele pla …

Why Playing Slow is The Best Way to Practice Piano

Playing fast is cool. Audiences love to see fingers flying fast over the keys, effortlessly and in perfect control (or even out-of-control!) It provides a sense of exhilaration and danger, and taps into our love of exhibition and speed. The pianist themselves also enjoy playing fast, as the effort and exercise is satisfying once grasped. But despite the love of playing fast, the practice and journey to gain this ability is actually very much slow practice. There is a famous story of a co …
