If you are new to the guitar, we will learn about the instrument itself. The different parts, and what they do. Also, how to care for it, so it will perform well for you. We will work hard to have you playing something as soon as possible, but not under pressure.

Soon after you begin, when things progress well, we can try learning a favorite song that you choose. We'll start out very basic. Probably just playing the tune one note at a time. Then we'll do the chords and then play it together.

My favorite part of teaching is seeing someone do well on their instrument. When the work pays off, and everything starts making sense to the student, and they are learning new things on their own.

I have 12 years of experience playing the piano. My focus is primarily classical and sacred music. I have been teaching piano since 2016 and have loved every minute of it. I have also played for many special events (weddings/funerals/church worship team). My music instructor studied under interns of Juilliard School and Curtis Institute. From energetic kindergarteners with a list of favorite songs to learn to school-age students with an interest in the arts, my music students have found the piano to be a great creative outlet.

About Abigail

In my free time, I enjoy playing in my family's music band and learning new creative skills, such as sewing, crocheting, trying new recipes in the kitchen (including gourmet cookies), and am currently studying horticulture.

I am an adult student who has been taking violin lessons with Elana for about a year now. Elana is a highly skilled and talented instructor. Her unlimited patience and constant encouragement is what keeps me going. I always come out of the lessons feeling confident and excited to learn more. While Violin is known to be a difficult instrument to learn, Elana's way of teaching makes you feel like "you've got this!" I'm so happy I've found such an amazing teacher as Elana and I would highly recommend her to anyone who's interested in learning the Violin. With Elana, you can be confident you'll be playing beautifully in no time!

I hired Elana to give violin lessons to my daughter and help her prepare for audition. She already had private teacher but after two years I was not happy with the progress she made and decided to hire someone else. After first lesson with Elana I was sure I made the right decision. After second lesson my daughter told me she learned more with Elana in two lessons than with previous teacher in two years!Elana is very passionate when it comes to teaching violin, she is honest about her expectations and student's progress, yet very patient and mild in interaction.I could not recommend her more!

Throughout my entire college career, I had ample opportunities to conduct small and large ensembles (both wind ensemble and orchestra) which all stemmed from my experience as the Drum Major at my high school alma mater. During my undergrad, I primarily studied wind conducting with Professor Jack Williamson, where I received daily feedback on contrasting styles and ideas in a live conducting situation.

Score study led me to excel at Indiana University, especially in the music theory department. When I teach conducting, I treat it like the conductor is "playing" the ensemble, similar to how a pianist knows right where and how to touch the keys. The student and I go through different scenarios-styles, approaches, eye contact, and how to balance reading a score while cuing individuals.

"Annie gave our (University of Iowa) a terrific hour-long presentation on the history and technique of the natural horn. It was excellent, engaging, and informative in every respect, a demonstration of the skill and knowledge of a real professional. The students greatly profited from her expertise, and I am plotting to have her back soon to teach us more. She is a wonderful player and teacher!”

We hired Annie to teach private French Horn lessons to our daughter after the school year was cut short due to the pandemic. After just a month of lessons, she was playing with more confidence, enthusiastic about practicing(!), and expressing pride in her progress. Annie has excellent communication skills, is a natural at teaching kids even in the virtual (via Zoom) environment, and takes a sincere interest in her students’ development and overall well-being. Best money we’ve spent on music yet!
