Singing, and sharing my knowledge of singing with others, is my life's work. My singing students have won pageants, big parts in local and regional shows, competitions, and entry into the best magnet programs and universities. More importantly, they all learn to believe in themselves and are proud to sing with their own unique voices. We'll begin your learning journey together by discussing your specific goals. Each and every student's lessons are customized to fit these goals and preferences.
Please note that I do not accompany, but my students are welcome to bring their own accompanist or accompaniment tracks.

About Heather M.
More important than my conservatory education and my experience as an educator and a performer is my passion for teaching music and acting and my undying belief that anyone can learn to be a musician and an actor. I'm currently available to teach lessons in my own St. Augustine home studio and online around the globe.

I'm a cum laude graduate of Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey and a winner of its merit scholarship.
After performing with the New York and Royal Philharmonics, the New Jersey and Virginia Symphonies, the American Boy Choir and the internationally renowned opera star, Andrea Bocelli, studying opera and piano at Westminster Choir College and performance art and improvisational acting at East Carolina University in North Carolina, and appearing in shows and pageants across the east coast, I found my life'
s work in 2003 when I began teaching music.

I've taught hundreds of different students since 2003 with great success, from 5-year-olds with special needs to middle-aged professional opera singers, from a professor in Saudi Arabia to a 65-year-old doctor of music, from kids of Radio Disney to students of the famed Actors Studio in New York, from busy stay-at-home parents to retirees with bucket lists, from CEOs to touring singer-songwriters.

I've created and led a workshop about singing called, "The Whole Body Singer". I've written dozens of articles about music and music education for the blog at TakeLessons.com.

My extensive knowledge of the voice has encouraged and empowered hundreds of singers and prepared many of them to win competitions, pageants and auditions, as well as roles in operas and musicals. When a student comes to me in need of voice coaching, my job is to get to the root of mental blocks, to reveal why and how she's not singing at her optimum.

Both teaching myself piano and receiving formal training at a conservatory has prepared me to teach almost anyone how to play.

The intensive training and education that I received at Westminster Choir College in songwriting, music theory and sight reading has benefited my students at every level.

My current work as singer and keyboardist in the acoustic rock duo, Timberwood, has strengthened my knowledge of a broad range of styles and genres. As a lifelong learner, I have a strong commitment to continuing my education. That's why I studied songwriting online with the Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2014.

In the lessons that I teach, I'm flexible, positive and encouraging. While I want my students to have fun and love music, not dread it, I expect hard work and persistence. I am caring, patient, nurturing, and compassionate. In piano lessons, I usually allow the student to choose a piece with which to warm up and then move on to technique and repertoire. In voice lessons, I usually warm up the singer and discuss technique and sight singing before focusing on song choices. Joan Frey Boytim wrote a book for voice that I like to use, and I like the Estelle Liebling exercises for the more advanced singer. Hanon exercises are a big part of my piano curriculum, and I enjoy the Bastien and Alfred books for young and old. I have used completely random songs pulled out of a piano bench and a karaoke CD for kids. I will use almost anything I can get my hands on if it means effectively teaching music.

Acting lessons consist of exercises and games that apply learned concepts, with an emphasis on stage acting and Meisner technique, as well as monologue and audition coaching.

Parents, siblings and spouses are always welcome to observe lessons quietly.

I am not a highly trained singer, but I have taken many voice lessons over the years from various teachers, ranging from western classical teachers to Hindustani classical teachers. My guitar students are routinely made to sing, and I think singing is at the heart of all musical expression. I would love to help you find your voice.

About Luke
I majored in music at Berea College, then went on to The University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where I completed a Masters degree in guitar performance and served as the graduate assistant to the guitar department.

For the past ten years I have earned a living performing and teaching guitar. I am a certified Suzuki instructor, and I've held teaching positions at Winston Salem State University and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, along with at least half a dozen other schools and institutions. I've been featured on other artists' records, and received a grant to release an album of my own songs. I regularly perform in a wide variety of bands and ensembles.

I love to teach, and over the years I have taught hundreds, maybe even thousands of lessons. Having learned something from each and every one
of my students, I am now at a point where I excel at honing in on the individual interests and learning styles of whoever comes to me for help. There are many ways to learn guitar. The best one is the one that engages and inspires you the most. That said, there are also music fundamentals that we all need to know. My joy as a teacher lies in finding a way for you to master the fundamentals while at the same time following your personal bliss and intuition. We plot the course together, combining your curiosity and enthusiasm with my years of experience.

I also love working with kids. While they are having fun jamming, I discretely provide them with the technique and musicianship they'll need to excel in any musical environment, whether it's conservatory study or playing in a great band.

*** Lesson Details ***
Your enthusiasm is the key to your success, so my lessons are tailored to the interests and abilities of each student. That said, my classical background and dedication to effective teaching inform everything I do.

All of my students learn Music Fundamentals:
-Technique (habits of movement)
-Theory (how music works)
-Aural skills (hearing pitches, chords and rhythms clearly)

Many of my students use books. There are hundreds of great books these days, and I will work with students from any book they choose. Listed here are the books I regularly use. They all deliver great results:

-Aaron Shearer "Leaning The Classic Guitar"
-Will Schmidt and Greg Koch "The Hal Leonard Method"
-Joe Pecoraro "Read This First"
-David Oaks "Music Reading For Guitar"
-William Leavitt "A Modern Method For Guitar"
-Mateo Carcassi "Melodic and Progressive Studies, Opus 60"
-Leo Brouwer "Simple Studies"

Many of my students prefer to work without a book, and that is a great option too. These students learn scales, chords and theory and develop a repertoire of songs. I will show you how to play any song you'd like to learn. You can also work on writing your own songs or compositions, or improvising in any context, be it jazz, blues, Indian raga or flamenco.

Singing is also encouraged!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Home studio: music stands, extensive library of all kinds of music, great sound system and ability to stream any song, several guitars, recording equipment, footstools, keyboard and percussion instruments.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I'll bring my guitar and books, accessories as needed.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in versatility. I regularly play gigs doing classical, jazz, blues, rock, pop, and world music. All of these genres have a place in my heart, and I've devoted years to learning to play and teach them well.

I am equally polyamorous when it comes to the various things musicians do. I love to sing pop songs, dissect jazz lines, delve into expressive groupings with classical pieces, drill scales and arpeggios, you name it. Reading, improvising, composing and notating, transcribing and playing by ear, memorization, classical technique, blues technique, bluegrass technique, theoretical analysis... hit me up for any of that, or whatever else interests you.

Angela is extremely knowledgeable in all things voice and instrument. She is very talented in both singing and teaching. I took voice lessons from her & I can say I learned so much about technique, breathing, & how to care for my vocals. Angela taught me to embrace my range & love my voice. She is a great teacher I would recommend her to anyone that wants to learn more in this area.

Angela helped me to expand my range, and also taught me "how to breathe," which helped me get the support I needed to make clear sounding notes. I sang alto in chorus for years and she taught me how to successfully hit high notes and have them sound good too. She also worked with me at the tail-end of High School, when my anxiety ran rampant. But somehow she managed to make me a more confident singer and person overall. Thank you Angela! :)

Each lessons consist of a short warm-up period, which focuses solely on technique, and then a longer period to work on your songs where we develop technique, expressivity, and overall performance. I teach pop, country, R&B, folk, and music theatre styles. For singers interested in classical music, I have a strong classical background and familiarity with French, German, and Italian song literature. My lessons are tailored to your level whether are you a brand new beginner or a trained singer. I look forward to working with you!

About Heather
Hi! I'm Heather and I have been teaching private music lessons since 2008. I grew up on the stage! My mother was my first singing and piano teacher and from a young age I have been involved in acting, dancing, music theatre, oratorio, and opera! I went to the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where I earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance. I am passionate about giving my students the gift of self-expression through music while learning good technique and incorporating music YOU are interested in.

***Frequently Asked Questions***
What is your availability?
Just select a subject and a lesson location in the upper righthand corner above and you can see my availability!

What do lessons cost?
30 minutes $25
45 minutes $35
60 minutes $45

How
often should we meet and for how long?
I recommend lessons once per week. 30 minute lessons are good for beginning piano students. 45 minute lessons are ideal for singers and intermediate piano students. 60 minute lessons are appropriate for advanced students interested in studying lots of repertoire or for singers who are having a particularly difficult time with ear training.

What do you do in lessons?
To learn what you would be doing in a lesson just select a subject in blue under "Heather Teaches" at the top of this page for a description of how each lesson works in that subject.

I want to study piano, do I have to have a real piano?
No, you don't have to have a real piano but you do need at least a keyboard, preferably one that gets louder or softer depending how hard you hit a key, has at least 61 keys, and has a sustain pedal.

Do you help singers who want to learn rap, metal, or some other non-conventional style of singing?
Yes, I have actually worked with some metal bands before! Even if you are using something like screaming you can use it in a way that hurts your voice less. I love to apply good technique to styles like that.

***Student/Parent-Teacher Agreement***
STUDENT EXPECTATIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES
1: Schedule 10-30 minutes of practice each day for at least five days per week.

2: Arrive promptly at your lesson time. You reserve the time slot, not the number of minutes.

3: Be prepared to offer repertoire suggestions.

5: Parents/guardians may sit-in on lessons only if they do not disturb them. You may wait in the car or run an errand if you prefer.

1: I will provide a tailored curriculum to meet student’s individual needs while setting goals and encouraging a feeling of success at each student’s individual rate of learning.

2: I am a stay-at-home mom and occasionally I may need to attend to a child. In the rare circumstance that your lesson is interrupted, I will offer you make-up time at the end of the lesson or at a time that is most convenient for you.

CANCELLATIONS
1: If given 24 hours notice, I will allow for a makeup lesson or cancellation. If I am not notified within 24 hours a lesson credit will be used regardless of whether or not the student attends.

2: All lessons missed as a result of the teacher canceling will be made up at a convenient time or credited to the next lesson.

LESSON TERMINATION
If a student chooses to terminate lessons (after the introductory five-lesson period), the parent/guardian or adult student must inform the studio with a 30-day notice. The student is responsible for purchasing the last month’s lessons whether they choose to use the lesson credits or not.

Releasing Heather’s Voice and Piano Studio, Heather Ellis, and her spouse from all liability for personal injury, illness, or property loss or damage resulting directly or indirectly from studio activities occurring on the studio premises is required for admittance into the studio.

As a musical theater performer, I perform a wide range of genres from pop-rock to legit-musical theater! No matter if you're singing Adele or Rogers and Hammerstein, it's possible to sing all genres in healthy way so that your instrument keeps getting stronger, without losing the joy for the music. With a background in the Alexander Technique and Linklater, I emphasize a healthy approach to singing. Lessons will be catered to the student's individual goals and needs, but will focus on releasing unnecessary tension and building a strong foundation for the voice.

About Lauren
I'm an actor/musician in NYC, and have taught kids all over the world! I'm available for in-home, online, and in-studio lessons, where I can teach violin, flute, singing, acting, and English (ESL). In addition to teaching, this summer you can see me play the title role in The Fiddler on the Roof off-Broadway at NYTF, directed by Tony and Oscar winner, Joel Grey!

I received my BFA in Acting from Boston University's school of theater, but I have been making music since I could walk. As a classically trained singer, violinist and flautist, I've been able to incorporate my musical talents with my career as an actress. I play a range of professional gigs, from churches to rock concerts to pit orchestras. I had the chance to travel around the US, performing in theaters around the country for the Broadway national tour of the tony-award winni
ng actor/musician musical, Once! My range of experience helps me cater lessons to you and your specific needs.

While most of my life has been spent performing, I discovered a love for teaching after college. I have been teaching music and theater for 5 years, and two years ago I began teaching ESL to elementary students in Turkey. I fell in love with teaching English, and feel my training in theater and music helps me use different, exciting teaching techniques in our lessons. I am conversational in both Turkish and Spanish as well!

No matter if we're working on music, acting, or English, I'm incredibly committed to my students and want each lesson to be fun and motivational. I'm a patient, supportive teacher, and know that each student is unique and moves at his/her own pace! Please reach out to me, and I will be happy to answer your questions!

We love Lauren. She is making violin a great experience for our daughter (11 yrs old). She is very thorough and encouraging, and introduces interesting music that is fun and challenging for a beginner student. Our daughter says she can truly feel her own improvement, and is really happy to have additional lessons with Lauren, beyond what she receives in school. Lauren is flexible with scheduling and very reliable, and we intend to stick with her - and with the violin- for the duration!

Lauren Thomas is an excellent musician with a tremendous amount of patience and a seemingly boundless supply of talents. As a fellow musician who has played professionally alongside Lauren, I have witnessed first hand her skilled mastery of both the flute and the violin -- as intuitive as she is technically proficient. Apart from her musical abilities, she's kind, fun and sensitive and would make for either a great beginner violin teacher or as an instructor for someone with intermediate skills looking to expand their abilities. Cannot recommend her highly enough! Whether you're seeking instruction in the flute or the violin, Lauren's the woman for the job.

Hi! Thanks for checking out my profile! I’ve been singing for about 6 years now and took 2 years of intensive theory and ear training while in college. Our sessions will cover things like breathing, placement, diction, learning and getting into a routine of warming up and taking care of your voice, learning scales, harmonies, and how to hear pitch. My main goal is to make our time fun and not something you dread doing!

About Cameron
Hi! My name is Cameron, I live in Greensboro, NC but am originally from the Burlington area. I moved here when I came on staff at a local church to lead worship and fell in love with the city. I am currently engaged, but am getting married in June to the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. I've been playing music all my life; I started out on drums when I was five, but as I got older I wanted to experiment with other instruments, so in high school I started getting into singing and playing the guitar and writing my own songs. In college, I took a lot of music theory classes which helped equip me and gain a better understanding of music. Aside from lessons and leading worship, I also do a lot of producing, making beats for artists as well as doing some recording. I am currently working on a debut album as well. In my free time, I drive
for Uber and stream on Twitch. I look forward to meeting with you and teaching you!

Vocal lessons often suffer from a few key issues. First, they're often incredibly boring. Second, they rely on outdated and practically useless ideas that do not conform to today's needs. Third, they're totally unaffordable.

That's where I differ from most teachers. My lessons center around a few key notions:
Relevance
Results
Affordability
...and Enjoyment

This is the crux of my teaching style, and I have had incredible results with this endeavor. I encourage you to contact me as you begin a brand new era in your journey towards vocal excellence.

About Ray
The key to creative is a fresh approach, a new perspective. I realized this long ago, and I began to infuse this concept into my music teaching as well. I have been teaching guitar, bass, and voice lessons since 2007, and I have been told so many times that "my old teacher just didn't get it." or "he didn't understand today's music." A teacher's paradigm is the ultimate gauge of their ability to lead you forward.

My perspective is rooted in years of real-world experience. I've performed in front of thousands of people, written and recorded multiple albums, and traveled the country in my own creative pursuits, and I long to share the knowledge I've gained along the way.
