I teach Latin of all levels, whether from scratch or to help you in your classes. I tailor all my lessons to your needs, whether you want to ask me questions or would like to revisit lessons, whether you would like to speak Latin or would like to get ahead!

About Jenni
My name is Jenni and I am a professional Latin and Greek teacher with over ten years of experience teaching and tutoring both Latin and Ancient Greek. I have taught professionally at the elementary, junior high, and graduate levels and I hold a Master’s degree in Classical Philology. I currently work at the Polis Institute, where I teach Greek and Latin as living languages to graduate students.

I also have familiarity with spoken Latin and Ancient Greek, and I teach all of my professional courses in a 100% immersion setting. My passion is to show every interested student that they have the capability to master these languages.

With my help, the complicated aspects of these languages will become clear to you, as I help my students learn tools and strategies that they will keep with them in the classroom and out – all in a fun and fr
iendly tutoring environment.

With specifically tailored instruction, either as a supplement to current courses or an education ab initio (i.e. from the beginning), I will work with you to help you access the beautiful literature, history and music of the languages of the Ancient World.

Jenni has an incredible depth of knowledge of both Latin and Greek, reflecting not only her years of experience with both languages, but also a very concerted effort to think about the best way to teach these languages.

This became very apparent when I approached her to help me in what I felt would be a near impossible task: to learn a semester's worth of Ancient Greek in one month, starting from scratch.

Her clarity of explanation, her command of the material, and her professionalism as a tutor and teacher all made that possible, to the point where when I actually showed up to class, I actually found myself ahead of where everybody else was. I had mastered the material so well thanks to her efforts, that on the first test, I achieved a 104% (even got the extra credit mark), much to the impressed amazement of my new professor.

So when I give her this solid review of her skills, it is not to her as a tutor, or even a teacher. It is to her as a professional. Which is what she is in every sense of the word, as an educator, an admirer, and a bonafide inhabitant of the world of classical languages.

Jenni is simply the best. My son was struggling with Latin last year and I found Jenni online and she was able to catch him up on what he missed in order for him to start the year on a positive note. This year is going well for him . I am happy to report he received his first test grade this year and scored a 35.5/40.

He has now enjoying Latin!

Jenni is absolutely amazing. She’s been providing additional, complimentary instruction once a week for my son who is entering 3rd-year Honors Latin. Language is not his strongest point and he’s periodically struggled with aspects of learning Latin along the way. We needed an expert’s assistance to achieve the academic success I expect from him! Jenni’s personable, caring, and patient manner of education, keen sense of direction, and technical and historical acuity, has made a profound impact on my son’s competency and confidence.

I have a BA in Latin and Greek. It is true that these languages are “dead” and can be difficult to learn, but they are still useful in the modern world. An intensive study of Latin, for instance, provides a fundamental understanding of the language through the explanation of many grammar topics. This results in a fuller understanding of English grammar and vocabulary. It is good to develop the discipline required to learn Latin in high school and beyond.

In addition to tutoring, I teach Latin from scratch. I have typed up a series of Latin Outlines based on college course material. Outlines are divided into three sections: Grammar, Vocabulary, and Exercises.

About Ben
Music Lessons & Tutoring

Welcome to my studio, where I will instruct you in your musical and academic endeavors. What sets me apart is that I offer diverse instruction in two different areas. In my music studio, I give lessons in piano, violin, guitar, and composition. In my tutoring center, I specialize in Latin (learning from scratch and tutoring). I instruct students of all ages at different skill levels.

My in-studio lessons are given on a grand piano.

Education

BM Music Composition -- Ohio State University, Autumn 2012
BA Classics (Greek and Latin) -- Ohio State University, Autumn 2012
Classics Fellowship -- Indiana University, 2013-2014
Piano Training: Collegiate lessons from Steven Glaser and private lessons from George Haddad

Accomplishments

As a high school senior, under the tutelage of OSU Profess
or Emeritus and world-renowned pianist George Haddad, I performed the first movement of Shostakovich's Second Piano Concerto with the chamber orchestra.

I performed different self-composed pieces at seven OSU Composers' Workshops and won the Audience Favorite Award at the Johnstone Woodwinds Composition Competition in 2012. My Senior Composition Recital was performed on October 25, 2012. It showcased several of my three-movement works: string quartet, clarinet solo, set of classical songs for piano and voice, set of pop songs for piano and voice. Interspersed with these were two solo piano pieces and a duet for piano and violin.

My background makes me a knowledgeable and effective tutor. I was valedictorian at Delaware Hayes High School in 2009 and received OSU's Maximus Scholarship based on my ACT and SAT scores.

Ben was patient, kind and full of knowledge. He was great at noticing her hand placement and would make visual corrections as well as show her examples of where she should be. For our first online lesson, I was very impressed. We still need to learn more about the technical aspects of being online (example: where to move the output video placement) but I think that just adds to the fun and experience of the whole process.

My 12 year old son was hesitant to have Latin lessons based on the experience he had in a classroom setting. He just had his first lesson and immediately told me afterward, "I learned more from Jonathan than I did all year in class." He seemed to really connect with Jonathan and is actually looking forward to his next lesson.

After searching in vain for a latin tutor for our son in our neighborhood, we reluctantly turned our search to the internet. We're so glad we did. Jonathan is an excellent latin teacher! He evaluated our son's current ability level in latin and has guided him in lessons designed to address his weak areas. Our son is a good student and will work hard when challenged, but he also needs structure and guidance from his teacher. Jonathan provided both and has inspired him to pursue latin with enthusiasm. We are very grateful to have found such a wonderful tutor, and we would highly recommend Jonathan Hills to any student serious about improving his/her latin skills.

I have been studying Latin since 2005, and I have been teaching it since 2011. Many approach Latin with great apprehension, having heard that it's an almost impossible language to learn. For that reason, I know that students who choose to learn Latin most often do so with a specific goal in mind. I believe my job is to show you that Latin is not impossible and your goal is achievable. If you're simply curious about the language, that's great too. I love curiosity, and I look forward to helping you satisfy yours! I approach every student as an individual, so my teaching style will be personalized to meet your needs. I look forward to helping you succeed with Latin!

About Emily
Howdy! I have an undergraduate degree in Classics and an MA in ancient history, and I have been teaching/tutoring since 2009. I know first-hand how much hard work can achieve, but my experience in teaching has also taught me that the work doesn't have to be so hard when a student has experienced, dedicated help. That's what I'm here for! I have done both paid and volunteer teaching, and I have worked both for myself and for a university. I have taught a wide range of students - ADD students, injured students unable to attend normal classes, struggling students - in a variety of environments. I have experience teaching to groups and individuals; face-to-face, chat-room style, and via video conferencing. I teach language because I have a passion for it, and my goal with my students, whether they are learning a new language or furthering the
ir native English skills, is always to help them achieve their own language learning goals. I look forward to helping you achieve yours!

I discovered my love of Latin as a college student and immediately decided to make it a career. I've been teaching Latin for the past six years and specialize in Latin I-AP. I have taught out of the Cambridge and Ecce Romani series, but I am happy to work with any text book series you may be working out of. I am especially passionate about the AP curriculum. My goal is to make Latin as fun for you as it is for me. I have been known to break into song occasionally to teach the grammar.

About Jennifer
I have been an avid teacher of Latin for the past six years. I graduated with a BA in Latin, and after spending a year teaching English in Thailand, I came back to teach Latin. I am certified in Latin, English, and ESL in one state and will soon be certified in another. I have taught both in public and private schools, and will be teaching Latin at a local private school next year. My favorite aspect of teaching is making the subject fun and accessible for every student. I am incredibly passionate about Latin and I regard it as a great intellectual challenge to help each student to be successful. I am experienced in tailoring my instruction to different learning styles as well as any learning difficulties. I look forward to getting to know you and sharing my love of Latin and English.

Mrs. Jerger was the best teacher I had in High school! She taught in a way that was intriguing and made you want to understand the content. She included various games, activities, and different teaching strategies for each student to help them learn in a different way. There was never a dull moment in the classroom. Her constant positive attitude and love for teaching always put a smile on everyone's face. I took her class for 2 different years and enjoyed them both so much! I was also involved in the National Latin Honors Society that she created at my high school and thoroughly enjoyed that as well! I would recommend her 100% and would love to take more classes from her! She's awesome!

Magistra Jerger, as we referred to her in my classes at Allatoona High School, is the best Latin teacher that I have ever had. In addition to this, she is one of the best teachers that I have had from all disciplines. She makes the subject fun and interesting, and allows her students to relate to the material. I have taken her Latin II, Latin III and Latin IV classes during my time in High School, and throughout all of them I can say that it was and interesting and enjoyable experience. One of the more enjoyable classes was Latin IV, where we translated Caesar in his conquest of the Gauls and Britons. We had assignments that were fun, interesting, and that helped to convey the material and the actions of what was going on in the translations.
In addition to taking Latin classes by Magistra Jerger, I also was involved in the Junior Classical League at Allatoona High School that she oversaw. During my Senior year at Allatoona, I was involved in the club as the Vice President where the leadership as well as Magistra Jerger organized Latin and Roman themed events that made the experience of being a student of Latin feel more enjoyable than other languages.
In short, Magistra Jerger is a dedicated, passionate teacher of Latin, who has a legacy of fine Latin students. Even after two years of graduating and continuing in college, without being able to continue studying Latin, I can pick up some of the texts and understand the language. This is because of the great teaching I had from Magistra Jerger. I recommend you to be her student if you want to not only understand the language, but also the culture, and enjoy doing so.

I have tutored Latin for several years and received awards for my own proficiency. I began to learn Latin in middle school, and I was even a member of the Junior Classical League. In College, while I pursued my degree in Humanities and Cultural Studies, I took every Latin education opportunity available to me, including supervised reading and translation work in my undergraduate thesis. I have fulfilled courses through Medieval Latin, which was at the graduate school level. I received an award in Latin Excellence this past Winter semester, at my graduate school.

About Maria
I, Maria J., graduated Summa Cum Laude with Honors College distinction from the University of South Florida, in 2014. I have seven years’ worth of tutoring experience. I have tutored students, at differing abilities and intensities, in Algebra, English, and Latin. I view learning as an accumulative experience. In my sessions, I would have two goals: one, to explain concepts and, two, to provide moments for the students to use this acquired knowledge. I believe that variability in information presentation is important to the overall success of learning. Therefore, I use various methods to convey the same information. My second goal follows closely: I would offer opportunities for students to use what they have learned. Giving them occasion to find the answer before I intercede, helps students realize where their strengths and shortcomings
are. Through a careful balance of teaching and homework, the student’s ability will increase.

In the one year that I had Mr. Scharping, it was easy to see how much he really loved the language. Personally, I loved his style of continuous repetition in order to learn things. In class he would speak to us in Latin and we would respond in Latin, which really helped me master the language. If you ever needed help he was also very open to help you out. I would gladly recommend Mr. Scharping to any of my friends, if they wanted to learn Latin, because of his diligence and extensive knowledge of the language.

I have taught Latin for 13 years in various environments. I have taught high school Latin I, II, III, IV and AP. However, I also taught my son, starting at 4 year old. I prefer the Cambridge Latin Course, and a reading approach to Latin, though I am familiar with other texts as well. I am a very visual teacher and incorporate history and culture into all that I am teacher. (I also have a Master's in Social Studies .) I have sponsored Junior Classical League for 14 years.

About Laura
I agree with the your philosophy that “All children can learn when taught correctly, regardless of past history.” I feel connecting to the students as individuals and on a personal level is what engages them and bring them to level of wanting to learn. I believe in “teaching across the curriculum,” as no subject is isolated from any other. Teaching Latin has enabled me to teach ancient history, literature, poetry, English grammar as well as the language. I have also taught humanities and mythology, which helps with the whole global perspective of history. My lesson plans are developed using constructivist techniques and are authentic with the intention of helping students become life-long learners.

Laura Eckard is a very charismatic and responsive teacher. She works well with her students and she assures that they have all opportunities to succeed. She is very good at explaining and making sure her students understand. I was very impressed with her as a teacher and how well her and her students interacted. For me personally, she helped me to better understand the subject as a whole, and to fully grasp all concepts. She works well with her students and in return, they gain the knowledge she gives them.
