I maintain very active performing and teaching careers. I have private voice studios on Long Island and in Manhattan and have taught singers and pianists in every genre of music for the last 28 years. I was on the faculty of New York University in the Music and Music Professions Department for 5 years. I was a coach in the Banff Centre's 'Voice through body and movement' workshop. Throughout my career as a vocal coach, I have worked with many cabaret artists as musical director, arranger and accompanist. Most notably, Debbie Boily's "Thank You for the Music"a one woman show with me at the piano, recorded live at Ovations in June 2004 Houston, Texas and subsequently performed in France, England and New York. Most recently, I recorded an opera with Jazz legend Anthony Braxton and a Jazz CD with Fred Ho. I have recorded operas in progress fo
r Atlantic Records and new works of composers on the BMI label. Hi! My name is Barbee and I’ve been teaching and singing professionally for over ten years. I love helping my students reach their musical goals, while having fun making music at the same time!

I accept students of all levels and ages 8 and up. Some of my students are working musicians, actors, and voice actors; many are teenagers who aspire to study music and/or theatre in college and become professional performers. I was born and raised in the Mid-Western US where I played and performed in several circuit bands, some which received record contracts! I also have 2 national product endorsements. After 10 years of playing in the mid-west, I then set my eyes on the Southern US where I currently resides and performs. I have over 27 years of total experience in the industry. This experience includes guitars, equipment, booking, marketing, effects, amplifiers, recording and live music mixing. Some example lessons would be as follows:

I target each student uniquely. No cookie-cutter lesson plans! I learn your short and long-terms goals and set the lesson material appropriately to help the student achieve their goals. Lessons absolutely have to be fun, so if you like to laugh and have a good time while learning guitar, this is right up your alley!

I use both written and media formats for my lessons. For example, the written material may include chords, modes or scales while the MP3 files (which I send via email) will cover the application of this material and can be used by the student for reference at home. Often the MP3 files include the material performed at a very slow speed and then again at normal speed to help the student understand the lesson and material.

All you need is a positive attitude and a desire to make music and you will be able to do it with a smile!

My name is Victoria. I'm originally from beautiful San Diego, California, but I am now a full time professional musician based out of Philadelphia. I received a certification in live performance, studio work, and songwriting through The Contemporary Music Center, now located in Nashville, TN. I like lessons to be, first and foremost, an enjoyable experience for everyone involved. I try to create a laid back and comfortable learning environment for all my students. Music is fun, and I guarantee that there will be plenty of good times while taking lessons!
Now, let me also clarify that my positive attitude and laid back demeanor are not excuses for students to be undisciplined and uncommitted. I promise to work hard toward your development as a musician to make you the best you can be, and I appreciate the same commitment from all of my students.
Music should be enjoyable, but also rewarding and enriching to your life! I don’t want to sell that short!

Below is a basic rundown of what a student can expect to learn while under my instruction. I would first like to preface this information by saying that I fully recognize that every student is different; therefore, I tailor lessons to fit an individual’s needs and goals. Because of this, the priority of certain skills tends to vary from one student to another, as does the order in which this skills are taught. I also want to note that I tend to use some self-made resources (charts, explanations, etc) in addition to published books. Taking into consideration the aforementioned variables, here is the basic rundown of the material I try to cover with students, in the general order it is taught:

-Understanding of guitar parts (anatomy of the instrument) and basic terms (ie note, chord, etc).
-Names of strings (E-string, B-string, etc.) and corresponding numbers for strings (1-6), and which fingers are given what numbers.
-Tuning of the instrument
-Basic technique (how to finger a fret board, hold guitar, hold pick, etc).
-How to find notes on the fret board/chromatic
-Basic rhythm concepts and counting (whole notes, quarter notes, time signatures, etc)—usually involves clapping exercise, single note playing exercises, reading rhythm charts, and learning what different note values look like.
-Basic concepts of “keys”
-Basic major and minor scales (especially for “warming up”)
-Chords (mostly basic open chords)
-Strumming
-Learning songs to put concepts together
For more advanced students, we will likely get into the following:
-Power chords, bar chords, and complex chords beyond majors and minors.
-Scales beyond basic majors and minors
-Music theory (chord construction, modes, etc).
-Knowledge of gear (for those guitarist who wish to branch out to electric guitar)—bass players will already have to know some of this before moving to more advanced work since they already require an amp.
-How to play with other musicians and instruments (collaboration, listening, understanding each instrument’s part, etc).

[To give students a basic timeline for these skills, one can expect to be playing open chords within three months and probably their favorite songs within 6 months]

SONGWRITING TEACHING METHODS:
-Review slides about basic song structure and anatomy of songs (verse, hook, etc)
-lyric and vocal phrasing
-finding your voice as a writer
-exploring environments and conditions that foster one’s creativity for writing songs (preference for outdoors, quite secluded spaces, etc).

LIVE PERFORMANCE:
-Breathing/relaxation exercises
-Movement/watching footage of self
-Watching footage of others
-Acting/stage exercises to get out of your head and into your body
-learning common problems with live performances and becoming comfortable with fast, on-the-spot trouble shooting (and how to avoid some problems before they begin).
-Finding your stage voice, both in singing and speaking.
-Developing your stage persona

Both my mom and dad were musicians and taught private lessons at home, so I grew up wanting to be a part of the music making. Now I am a university music educator who performs frequently as a soloist and collaborative pianist. I hold piano performance degrees from Carnegie Mellon and Yale. In addition, I've studied chamber music at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau (France) and vocal accompanying at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. I perform as a church musician, choral accompanist, and recital pianist in traditional and more modern styles. I'm active as a collaborative artist in competitions, auditions, and recordings. In the past three years I've been studying ballroom dancing for fun and as an extension of my interest in experiencing music from the standpoint of total body movement. It's been a game-changer for sure!

About Joshua
I am a tutor who earned a music teaching degree, substitute taught, and didn't become a school teacher. I held professional tech retail jobs and am supplementing my life with my passion - education.

Whatever subject or instrument I teach, I celebrate students' successes; and I enjoy helping learners have new aha moments.

The majority of my students take guitar, bass guitar, or Spanish lessons. I am an educator and help my students learn other skills and knowledge sets too.

I went to Ohio State University for college, earned a BA in Music Education, and graduated Cum Laude. I also spent 4 years in the Ohio State University Marching Band.

Through my healing journey, I've developed patience, insight, and understanding for my students' learning processes.

In search of helping our 10 year old son build some self-confidence we sought out clarinet lessons this summer. He started playing in school last year, and it was something our reluctant son liked "enough" to want to build up some competency. Joshua has been amazing! He finds just the right amount of challenge to encourage my son to practice, but not get discouraged. My son looks forward to his lesson each week and told me that he isn't even sure he wants to switch to saxophone next year because he is having so much fun playing the clarinet. Joshua is amazing with children, and has spent time getting to know our kiddo and find out what will work best for him. Patient, calm, and inspiring--very talented instructor.

Joshua Blatman is a fantastic music teacher. He has a great resume, is experienced in a variety of instruments, and a solid background in teaching.
I think any kids lucky enough to learn music from Joshua will have fun and hopefully fall in love with learning it, just like my kids have.

Practicing and performing can feel very different; my teaching will focus on making them feel much more similar and how to get comfortable playing in front of people. Practice room efficiency is key, but we will also work on calming your mind and staying positive even when nervous.

About Sara
Sara Neilson grew up in Alexandria VA, and began her musical career as a violinist. Though she always wanted to play music for a living, it wasn’t until college that she fell in love with the bass and decided to pursue it professionally. After earning degrees in both Music Education and Music Performance, she received a master's degree in Bass Performance from DePaul University, where she was runner up in the Concerto Competition. Since graduating, she has taught double bass in a variety of settings around Chicago. Her students have performed at the Obama Foundation, the Aspen Music Festival, and Carnegie Hall. She had performed at the Chautauqua Institute, Eastern Music Festival and Brevard Music Festival and has appeared locally with the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, the Elgin Symphony Orchestra and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. Her te
achers include Rob Kassinger, Ira Gold, and Owen Lee. In her free time, Ms. Neilson enjoys knitting sweaters, doing vinyasa yoga, and daydreaming about her future dog, Button.

Sara has a great eye for detail, and has various ways of articulating what she either sees or hears in a person's playing. She does well in meeting the student where they are in order to encourage them along the way, while maintaining the teacher student relationship, something not easily done. Her experience, willingness to help and patience all make her a very excellent instructor in my opinion!

About Jack
Jack Fanning has been teaching the bassoon since 2015. He is currently available to teach lessons online, or at the student’s home (and is ready and willing to travel within the NC Triad area). Jack aims to make each lesson fun, enjoyable, educational, and informative. He has helped middle school and high school students win positions in youth orchestras and honor bands in California and North Carolina.

Jack studied bassoon performance with Dr. David Wells in Sacramento, CA, and is currently studying bassoon performance with Dr. Michael Burns in Greensboro, NC. The tutelage of these great bassoonists fostered a love of music education and sharing the magic of bassoon playing with younger students.

Jack is an accomplished bassoon reed maker and makes his reeds available to purchase for his students. The importance of a good reed to
a young bassoonist is paramount; it is key to making great music and being successful from day to day.

Very knowledgeable and friendly, and a great communicator about bassoon technique. Today was my daughter’s first lesson with Jack - She learned so much and has some good assignments to work on before the next lesson. We totally recommend Jack as an instructor!

I couldn't be more happy with the bassoon lessons that Jack has with my daughter. The online lessons are so convenient and a great way to work with this fantastic teacher. Jack's teaching style is extremely positive and supportive. He encourages my daughter to push out of her comfort zone and grow as a musician. The progress that she has made with him is incredible. He is very knowledgeable about music and integrates music theory, sight reading, and rhythm studies into their lessons. You can see that he loves playing and teaching the bassoon and that excitement carries over to my daughter. She never wants to put her bassoon down after their lessons! Lessons with Jack have been the best thing we've done to support her playing bassoon.
