We absolutely love Candida. She seems to be able to connect to my 8 years old which I constantly have to push to practice, so and I cannot ask for more honestly. I'm just happy he's so excited to go to the class. Worth every $ and trust me I just moved in NYC and the lessons are double the price than in NJ.
Initially I like to evaluate the student's current comprehension level (regardless of years studied) to better select the appropriate starting point. From there, if there is a specific subject matter or course work/syllabus for a class that needs to be followed, I can tailor lessons to fit those needs. Throughout lessons, I like to bring in elements such as cartoons, newspapers, movie clips, etc. to aid in understanding everyday usage & make learning practical and pertinent to the student.
**30 minute lessons are available for students interested in Conversational Portuguese practice ONLY (for Intermediate/Advanced Only). Please send me a message if you are interested & we can discuss how to arrange through TakeLessons.
About Kenji Luis
I grew up speaking English, Portuguese & Japanese in a multilingual family and from a young age developed a strong affinity & penchant for languages. I attended an English-Portuguese Bilingual school through 6th grade and studied Japanese 4 years in high school, along with weekend Japanese school classes. In college I went on to major in International Relations & Diplomacy with a concentration in French studies, also honing my Spanish that I had picked up along the way (with Romance Languages, I have a very easy time of language absorption). I've gone on to work for international companies wherein my language skills have been highly sought after, translating & communicating often in all my language strengths.
I am a native speaker, I will be able to teach my students pronunciation , grammar, and conversation. I will tenaciously but patiently help them master the language and all the nuances that make Brazilian Portuguese such a unique language.
Hi,there! My name is Marcia and I am really excited to meet you. I've been teaching ESL since 1990, Brazilian Portuguese since 2001 and TOEIC preparation since 2006. I have loved helping my students master English as a Second Language grammar, vocabulary, and conversation. It is thrilling to see my students accomplish their goals when they are able to converse, read, and write in their target language, and when they improve their comprehension and pronunciation skills. My academic background is one hundred percent language oriented. I am a translator for Brazilian Portuguese but have worked as a teacher since I graduated because teaching is my passion and learning is my passion.
I am a very enthusiastic teacher and I have been voted the best teacher of the year virtually every year. I use a communicative approach and my goal is t
o keep the teacher-student talk time respectively at a 30% and 70% ratio.
I can't wait for the opportunity to help you reach your linguistic goal.
I lived in Manaus, Brazil for 2 years as a volunteer proselytizing missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As a result of talking to people all day, every day, I attained full fluency and command of the Portuguese language. I further polished my abilities in the language by taking an advanced Portuguese grammar class and Brazilian history class (both taught exclusively in Portuguese) during my Bachelor's degree at Brigham Young University. I know the language intimately, and can provide the highest quality of instruction to students of the language.
As a recent recipient of a Master's Degree in Flute Performance from Northwestern University's Bienen School of Music, Drew Powell is a promising young flutist and highly sought after flute teacher. For 15 years, he has participated in numerous music competitions, festivals, and performance opportunities, both as a soloist and part of ensembles, and actively continues to do so. He is an advocate of the arts and passionate about spreading the gift of music, which has lead him to teach over 30 students (and counting!) in just the past 3 years.
Drew won the 2017 Myrna Brown Artist Competition (an international competition with no age limit) hosted by the Texas Flute Society. He was recently invited to be a guest artist at the 2018 Texas Flute Society Annual Convention, where he taught several masterclasses and gave solo performances.
**My Vision*** I seek students who share a love of learning. I am not looking for the finest musicians or highest IQ's, because those gifts are not required to learn and grow. My greatest experiences as a teacher have come from when I work with students who just want to learn more.
***My Requirements*** I hold my students to high expectations when it comes to practicing. Each week, I give students individual assignments that I know will improve their learning and playing abilities, and I expect those assignments to be fulfilled by the next lesson. A failure to do so will result in frustration for both myself and my student.
However, I know that nobody is perfect, and I myself have had my share of weeks where life happens, and I simply don't progress as much as I would like. As a teacher, I understand this perfectly, and I will always strive to listen to my students, and work with them through their difficulties or struggles.
***What To Expect From Lessons*** I bring a lot of energy to lessons! I am very passionate about teaching and helping students grow, and I make sure to bring that to every lesson. I give concise, direct feedback to students, making sure to give them the information they need to understand how they can achieve their goals and grow.
I am very perceptive of students' feelings, and I take care to be sensitive to their needs each week. My worst fear as a teacher is to cause hurt feelings, so I will do everything in my power to avoid that!
I am an expert in the field of music and the flute, so you can be rest assured that the quality of instruction will be the highest.
Drew is always polite, patient, and professional. I would definitely recommend his lessons to anyone wanting to learn to play the flute. I am looking forward to our future lessons.

In the few months that I've had flute lessons with Drew, I've grown so much. As a beginner in flute, I was completely scared and overwhelmed with taking band for the first time. Knowing I needed lessons, I'm so glad that I was paired with Drew. On my first lesson, Drew asked me what my goals were and I told him that it was to just simply read the notes on the page. That's all I expected to learn from him, but he taught me so much more! Drew taught me about musical expression, tone and all the little details behind flute playing. His teachings challenged and motivated me. My peers and band teacher have noticed my improvement and progress. Thanks to Drew, I can now play with confidence and poise. -Emma

I am originally from Brazil and Portuguese is my first language. I have a BA in Language and Literature. I also have experience as a Portuguese Interpreter. I have been tutoring Portuguese, English and Math since 2007. I tutor students of any age.
Charlene is an excellent teacher. Her lesson demonstrated that she is an experienced instructor with a passion for teaching. She was fully engaged and encouraged me to go forward with my Portuguese language learning. I enjoyed our first lesson which included assessment, grammar and extremely helpful pronunciation cues. I recommend her highly.
Portuguese is my native language! I teach any levels
My name is Jessica and I've been in contact with music since I was 3 years old. I have always loved music and it has always been a huge part of my life. I love it so much it became my profession. I'm so excited to share this passion with everybody who wants to learn. Music is for everyone!
*Music* I'm a piano and guitar appreciator since childhood and music amplifies our horizon and vision of life. Now, in the same way that someone gave me my first musical instructions, I am doing the same, giving lessons to beginners.
*Computer Skills* I've been working with excel, ms access, linux for almost 30 years (Ms project 15YRS), I basically started when I was 16 while I was assisting my dad who was an state auditor and had to do a lot with accounting data.
Since the good usage of information values gold, I have been using these IT tools intensively throughout my whole professional career and they definitely provided me a good growth.
So, now I'm sharing part of the lessons learned during these years, teaching these important computer skills: Excel, Ms Access, Linux, Ms Project.
Nicolás is a language passionate who has been looking for the best ways to learn foreign languages since he was a kid. This was discovered by Lida Maria Franky, president for the International Montessori Association in Colombia, who trained him herself to be a bilingual language teacher. When working for the Montessori Bilingual School in Cali, Colombia with both adults and children he got his language teaching international certification through the Cambridge University, while he was going to as many alternative methodologies conferences and lectures as he could, as well as learning Portuguese, language he then consolidated when backpacking throughout the vast Brazil. Teacher Nick believes there’s no person who is just “bad for languages”. There are dozens of approaches for teaching a language, and he does his best to apply the ones that fit his students the most, so that he can assure language learning in all cases. The hourly rate is $40 dollars if you come to him or if he can walk

I really liked how Nicolás was so patient and committed to my learning. He planned the lessons very well so we could do the most in the time we had. I always felt motivated to keep improving thanks to the way he explained every subject. Also, he makes the lesson so fun and enjoyable that you really have a great time while learning. I totally recommend him.

My wife is from Puerto Rico and her family doesn't speak English so every time we went there I was not able to communicate with them, she tried to teach me and our son but honestly that's not her thing...she found teacher Nick to teach us and he's been more than great! We have been learning so much that although my son is still taking Spanish with him, I am fluent now and started taking Portuguese a couple weeks ago as I travel to Brazil for business often and I'm really excited for all the new things I've learned already, obrigado profe!!!!

Nick, you have been great! I’ve been struggling to learn Spanish for quite some time now but he was able to find a methodology that was effective for my learning style. I now feel like every class I take with him I am learning/understanding so much more, at a much faster rate. Thanks nick!
"Marcia was really patient and helped me with my pronunciation. She was also really encouraging. I enjoyed my first class."
"Joneide takes great care to utilize relevant as well as interesting materials to enhance her language instruction. Authentic music and texts helped me to
meaningfully connect to the language. Also, she is a native speaker so her fluency and cultural knowledge is an invaluable resource. She cares about her students as individuals and adapts her instruction accordingly."
"After a ~6 months of Portuguese classes in university, I took a year of lessons with Márcia. I was preparing for a post-graduate study abroad program, so
was looking to maintain and improve my Portuguese relatively intensively. Working with Márcia was an absolute delight - she was always punctual, willing to work with my schedule, and adopted the textbooks I was used to. Depending on my schedule, she was happy to assign me homework or come to class prepared with activities if I didn't have time outside of class to study that week. Our lessons were mostly conversations, with Marcia actively pointing out new vocabulary words, grammar usage points, or tidbits of Brazilian culture throughout. Unlike my university classes, Marcia taught me Portuguese for professional AND casual situations. She even invested time in my learning outside of my lesson by reviewing and providing thorough feedback on my assignments before we even got to the lesson.
I would highly recommend taking lessons with Márcia no matter your level - she's patient, funny, energetic, and professional, not to mention a great teacher. Muito muito obrigada, Márcia. Foi um prazer! :)"
"Great first lesson! Looking forward to the next."
"Always AMAZING! I am learning so much every class. She is the best teacher ever... and now my friend as well. xo xo xo :)"
"Marcia is great! Very patient, knowledgeable and gives great feedback to keep you engaged and wanting to learn more! Thank you Marcia!"
"She is a natural, she is very perceptive and adapts to student's needs automatically."
"Great first lesson. Very excited to continue. Very active and interactive lesson."
