I teach beginner cello primarily using the Suzuki books, but supplement with other materials when needed. My students work on scales and rhythm constantly to improve their tone and musicality as well as technique. I teach classical, religious, fiddle, and more. I also teach group ensembles, trios, quartets, and I work with students on their school orchestral and audition pieces.

About Erin
My name is Erin. I am a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Music, with a concentration in Violin. I began studying violin at the age of six. I have performed with small chamber ensembles, orchestras, quartets, and trios. I enjoy playing for churches and weddings, and love teaching.

I began teaching beginner to advanced Violin and Viola in April of 2001 in NC. I moved to California in the fall of 2008. Since moving to California I have extended my teaching to beginner Piano and Cello also. I have taught students ages 3 to 87 how to play and enjoy music on a personal level. My experience includes leading sectionals for middle school orchestra, organizing and instructing small ensembles, and organizing student recitals. Student recitals I arranged once or twice a year to showcase the
students' growth and abilities, and to provide an opportunity to give back to family and friends whose sacrifices and support enable the students to succeed.

I teach because I love music and I believe God has given me a gift. Playing and teaching help me to use my talent for His glory. I love working with people and I love how music enables people of all ages to open up and express themselves in a positive way, no matter what life throws their way. I believe music teaches discipline, builds self esteem; helps set and achieve goals; and positively affects and enhances other curricular endeavors.

My teaching philosophy is to always have fun while learning, to set attainable goals for the student, to learn through encouragement and discipline, and to help students come to love music on a personal level. I focus on the character of each student and their goals and desires to see that the student and/or parents are satisfied. Teaching is a privilege for me that I do not take for granted.

*** Lesson Details ***
I offer half hour, forty-five minute, sixty minute lessons, or longer on a weekly basis, but I do Not offer bi-weekly lessons. My lessons begin with the fundamentals of music. I believe a firm foundation in rhythm and reading is important because a student may switch musical instruments one day and the basics are universal and necessary. I have a deep love and appreciation for music which I hope to instill in my students as well. I am strict in the sense that I like students to polish their pieces before moving on. I like to keep them focused on playing well, not just playing.

A typical lesson will begin with scales to warm up, a review of the previous week's material, and a new assignment. Students will memorize pieces, be proficient in scales and rhythms, and all the while laughing and having a great time. I am known with my students for my creative analogies and flexibility to try new things in order to adapt to the students strengths and weaknesses. My students look forward to coming to their lesson, and that is very rewarding as a teacher.

I primarily use the Suzuki method for Violin and Viola, because it offers progressive steps to mastering technique, style, and musicality. My curriculum includes the use of Winning Rhythms, Wohlfahrt studies, All for Strings Theory, Essentials for Strings, and many more beginner and advanced studies; including shifting and double stops.

I love music and I love working with people; teaching is just icing on the cake. I look forward to helping you achieve your goals and discover your talents and I hope we can learn together. I look forward to meeting you!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music Stand and Keyboard

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect the student to have their instrument, and necessary accessories ie: rosin, shoulder rest, strings, books, and music stand.

*** Specialties ***
I teach Music on Violin, Viola, and Piano, as well as beginner cello. I am very creative in my teaching methods, though I use the Suzuki Method primarily for string instruments. I believe learning should be fun. I teach all the fundamentals of music from the beginning: counting rhythm, scales, reading music, theory.

Teaching cello to students of any age is a passion of mine, I hope we can work together!

About Minzo
My name is Minzo, and I'm a cellist and educator originally from Philadelphia! I graduated from the Peabody Institute of Music of the Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelors of Music in cello performance. Upon graduating in 2016, I moved to Houston in order to pursue a Masters of Music degree at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University.

As an educator, I have experience teaching young children who have never touched a cello before, to advanced college students who have been studying for as long as I have! Each student has his or her own difficulties, and my lessons are tailored specifically for each student. From week to week, whatever the issues, the student can be assured that specific difficulties will be targeted.

If you are a beginning student, young or old, I will teach you the basics of cello playing, such as hand p
ositions, note names, and terminology of the different parts of the cello. As you become more advanced, we will begin to explore musicality, such as shaping phrases and understanding how the music works as the composer intended. I do encourage an open dialogue between the student and teacher, as often there might be something that I can learn from you!

As a cellist, I have had the honor of performing for and working closely with artists such as Steven Isserlis, Robert DeMaine, Jeremy Denk, and countless others for masterclasses and concerts. In order to get a sense of where my schooling is from, I studied for 5 years under Alan Stepansky, who is the former Associate Principal Cellist of the New York Philharmonic. Currently, I study with Desmond Hoebig, who has had the title of Principal Cellist of the Cleveland, Houston, and Cincinatti orchestras. I have learned everything that I know from these great cellists, and I hope to pass what I’ve learned on to you!

Minzo was my summer instructor for three months. Though I only had the opportunity to be mentored by him for a short period of time, by the end of the summer I could easily see how greatly and quickly I improved! He is a fantastic cellist, and it goes to show through his ability to develop technique and musicality. I always felt motivated and challenged during our lessons. He is a great teacher for any cellist regardless of prior experience or skill level!

I work with each individual student to help them become both the best musician and the most well-rounded person they can be. While we will work on technical skills like note reading, playing in tune, and practicing good rhythm, we will also develop skills like good listening, cooperation, and critical thinking, which can be applied to all aspects of a student's life.

About Emily
Emily Austin S. began playing the cello at age 8 and has enjoyed a life full of performing and teaching music ever since. She has earned bachelors degrees in Cello Performance and English Literature from the Peabody Conservatory and Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, and recently graduated with her Masters degree in Cello Performance and Pedagogy. My goal as a teacher is to help you reach your musical goals! My lessons consist of scales, duets, and solo repertoire. Each lesson is different depending on the student I am working with, but the core of my teach is based around these 3 areas.

About Victor
My name is Victor and I have been actively teaching cello for the past 4 years. In Ames, IA I had a studio of 8 students, all ranging from different age groups and abilities. I also have experience teaching online lessons, which require a slightly different approach than normal in person lessons. I recently moved to Boston to pursue my masters degree in cello performance at The Boston Conservatory. I am looking forward to building a studio here in Boston! My goal as a teacher is to help you achieve your musical goals. I try my absolute hardest to create a warm and positive environment for all of my students. I understand that all of my students are different and I make sure to create individual lesson plans for each of my students. Not only will you grow as a musician and as a cellist, but I believe that learning an instrument gives us sk
ills that can be beneficial in every aspect of our daily lives. Whether you are new to the cello, picking it back up after some time off, or at a more advanced level, I hope to hear from you! If you have any questions at all, please send me an email. I look forward to hearing from you!

I love playing and teaching the cello, and I'm so excited to share that with you. I make lessons fun and engaging, and you'll leave feeling positive and determined. I believe that the technique should serve the music, so we'll always focus on creating art and telling a story. Cello playing mirrors life, so what we do in the practice room will have much larger applications than you might anticipate! From beginning students learning the basics to advanced players who need a push in the right direction, I can guarantee you'll improve quickly and have a great time doing it.

About Claire
I'm a recent graduate of the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, where I recently won the 2017 Cello Competition to perform the Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No. 1 with orchestra. Previously, I attended Yale University where I earned my Bachelor's degree in psychology. I have spent most of my summers performing at the Aspen Music Festival and School in Colorado, and I have played in festivals from Indiana to Italy. My cello teachers have included Eric Kim (Jacobs), Richard Aaron (Juilliard), Alan Harris (Eastman School), Maria Kisoupolos (NY Philharmonic), Eric Bartlett (NY Philharmonic), and Wolfram Koessel (American String Quartet). I'm an active performer on the East Coast, collaborating with many artists such as harpist Nancy Allen and flutist Carol Wincenc. I have taught almost as long as I have played, beginning with local co
mmunity service and growing to teach as part of the Aspen Music Festival PALS program: I live and breathe the cello, and I can't wait to share my passion with you.

I am an energetic cellist and devoted teacher. Using the Suzuki method, I teach students to learn by ear, develop strong technical skills through sequential repertoire, and develop artistry through repetition and consistency in confident music making. I also offer group classes and frequent performances.

About Megan
After receiving two performance degrees in music, I focused my efforts on becoming a fantastic teacher. For over a decade, I've received constant training on cello pedagogy and enhancing my teaching skills. I've taught in 2 different Suzuki strings programs and I've taught privately in my home studio since 2005. I also perform regularly as a freelance cellist. I've had experience playing in professional orchestras, in string quartets, as a recording artist, and as a soloist. When I'm not immersed in music, I like to explore the mountains on skis, on a bike, or on foot.
