About Charles
Charlie is a certified music teacher, who teaches in areas surrounding Wendell and travels to teach in the Raleigh, Zebulon and Knightdale areas. He teaches in his home in Wendell and travels to other areas on certain days. (See availability)

He first began teaching guitar and piano during his music studies at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS. At the university and after receiving his degree in music education, he has taught and performed in various musical settings and venues which has included the genres of classical, jazz, blues, rock, folk and country. Besides teaching and performing, Charlie also is a songwriter who writes songs for his groups performances and teaches his more advanced students songwriting.

Drawing upon his education and experiences as both performer and teacher, he strives to rel
ate his background to his student's learning experiences and progress. As each student comes with his or her individual musical wants and interests, student lessons are designed to meet these needs of a particular student. Charlie has young students of ages 5 to 14 as well as students of upper ages. According to a student's level of musicianship (beginner, advanced or in between), students are taught how to read music, music theory in relation to their progress, chords, scales and how to write/compose their own songs. He has designed a method of teaching which is full of great musical exercises & fun illustrations for the young student to enjoy while learning skills on their instrument.

For example, students can began with simple fingerings of chords & beginning melodies played in slow rhythms to allow the student to develop at a comfortable pace. Students that can not read music notation begin simple reading exercises of note recognition, time signatures, note values, eye hand coordination and more.

*** Lesson Details ***
I design student lessons according the age, playing level and music related interests as lessons can cover a broad range of interests and musical styles. For my beginning students- to develop their understanding of playing chords and rhythms,
I teach chords as they relate to musical keys and some common rhythm patterns used in many popular songs.

For guitar students, I have designed & developed my own materials for guitar (sheets & accompanying CD) which guide students in practicing chords progressions, strum/rhythm patterns & scales/melodies in relation to chords. My students have shown much success in these methods of concentrating on developing that essential sense & feel for playing different rhythm styles. Piano instruction is centered on learning to read music notation and music theory as it relates to the student's progress.

As students advance, more emphasis is placed on improvising on melodies, different approaches to soloing and chord extensions and substitutions. Also, students are taught music theory as it relates to their progress to enable them to create their own music.

I have a good selection of method books and materials to fit each student's level of musicianship and choice of playing style(s) to extend upon their interests and goals.

My approach to teaching is to make lessons fun and enjoyable in a comfortable and relaxed setting to allow the student full
concentration on each lesson. But, also to provide the necessary guidance and encouragement to challenge and motivate students to improve and develop natural strengths and new skills.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I have a good selection of materials (many I've developed), extra instruments if needed and recording equipment. The student will need the instrument and an amp for electric guitar.

I began piano lessons with Charlie as a total beginner and he quickly helped me find my footing. He was always patient and encouraging and asking questions designed to make sure the lessons were structured in a way that would most efficiently achieve my own personal goals. I'm usually a pretty nervous person, but Charlie has a warm presence that makes it easy even for people like me to be able to open up and focus on what's important, the music. I highly recommend him to anyone who's been thinking about learning the piano but hasn't quite been able to take the plunge yet.

Whether you want to learn scales, arpeggios, chords, music theory, harmony, arranging, reading music, writing music, ear training, rhythm guitar styles (rock, pop, jazz, funk), soloing techniques (rock, metal, pop, fusion), songwriting (on acoustic and electric), live performance (pre-show preparedness, eliminating stage fright, developing a professional stage presence), using fx pedals, ideal amplifier settings, finding your signature guitar tone, music production (recording, mixing and mastering), music business (creating your press kit, marketing your music, negotiating payments and contracts)...you name it, I've studied it and will teach it to you!

*** Studio Equipment ***
When I'm not touring and doing sessions, I spend the majority of my time in Hollywood, where I keep a small but full-featured music studio on a nice, quiet little street just off Hollywood Blvd. It's great because it contains all of the necessary items I need to maintain my skills, improve my abilities, and expand my knowledge (sofa, chair, office desk/chair, several amplifiers, guitars, fx pedals, metronome, etc). And in terms of the lessons I teach, while there isn't an on-site waiting area, there are several shops, restaurants and a small Fresh & Easy grocer with a nice, quiet alfresco seating area just a block or so away. What's more, the Hollywood & Highland mall is only a few blocks away. Parking is very convenient in the LA Fitness subterranean garage, the entrance to which is located on North Sycamore Ave. The fee for parking is free for one hour, with easy, no-hassle validation from Fresh & Easy. Note: street parking is permit-only and you will be ticketed...so DO NOT park on the street!

*** Travel Equipment ***
Please bring your instrument, a notebook, pencil, and, if you would like to record your lessons to have and review afterward, a pocket-size recording device. I will typically record moments when a student performs an example of something s/he has been working on, or an improvisation regarding the same. I do this strictly for the purpose of (a) having an example to which to compare and measure the student's progress and improvement over time, and/or (b) to capture a 'magical moment' of musical inspiration that might prove useful to the student's artistic/musical development, etc. At the student's request, I will provide a copy of said recordings (if any) on a CD. All such recordings are kept 100% confidential, are not distributed nor disseminated for any reason whatsoever, and are deleted at such time that the student discontinues his/her lessons with me.

I am interested in teaching you what you need and want to learn so that you achieve your dreams. Please note that I only take serious students who will practice at least 30 minutes every day or 35 a day 6 days a week at home. I would like you to keep a log of how much you practice. This will enable you to make progress through the curriculum as you will be a beginner for the first 3.3 years, an intermediate for the next 3.3 years, and then an advanced student for 3.3 years. I will give you assignments to do over the week, and the next week we will go over them, learn something new and get new assignments. It takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert!

He may be good if you want to sing opera. I just didn't connect with him and his 'Style' of teaching. I was looking for more current music and that was where a very large disconnect was.

paper and other paper materials (music, exercises) to each lesson, as well as my guitar. I will bring a 1/4" cable for electric students. I expect students to bring their instrument and any accessories necessary. A music stand is required.

Kevin is a fantastic teacher for young children. He maintains a fun and playful environment for them while also explaining things in a way that they can understand. My 7 year old daughter has been taking lessons from him for a few months now and she really enjoys her time.

Depending on the level of theory you want to learn, I can teach basic theory (notes, triads, meter, basic ear training, sight reading, scales, circle of fifths, etc) all the way to advanced music theory (substitutions of chords/scales, modulations, jazz theory, advanced ear training/melodic dictation, etc)

I took an AP music theory class in high school and scored a 5 on the AP test. I have also taken music theory 1,2 and 3 in college and passed all with an A

Hi, my name is Kory, and I am currently an under graduate at Cal Poly Pomona studying Music and Business.

I have been playing guitar for over 10 years, and have taught guitar to dozens of students over the last 4-5 years. I also study recording and production, and have played in Cal Poly's Jazz Combo, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and Concert Choir (For more specific info, you can check out the "experience" section of my page).

In addition, I song-write and record music with my band, "Search For Delicious," a group of close friends from High School. You can check us out on Facebook and Bandcamp, and in the videos below.

My personal philosophy to teaching is that every student is a unique individual. I always start by connecting with the student, and figuring out what interests/goals they have in mind. Then I craft a lesson plan that wil
l help them achieve their goals, and work with their strengths and weaknesses. I practice patience and friendliness, and always do my best to inspire, motivate, and teach hard work/perseverance.

Baritone Daniel Collins has performed at Carnegie Hall and with the Metropolitan Opera chorus in New York City. He received his Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the University of North Texas and earned both his Master of Music and Doctor of Music degrees in Vocal Performance from Florida State University. Dr. Collins was a finalist in the Dallas and El Paso Opera Guild Competitions, the NATS Singer of the Year Competition, and the NATSAA National Competition. He has performed in opera, concerts, and recitals throughout the United States and as a soloist at some of the most prestigious churches and synagogues in New York City and Washington, D.C. Dr. Collins was described by Tim Page with the Washington Post as a “funny, exuberant, and enormously likable” Papageno during Summer Opera Theater’s performance of The Magic Flu
te. The Post also celebrated him in Opera Theater of Northern Virginia’s The Barber of Seville as a “bright and bouncy” Figaro who delivered his lines with “aplomb.” He was a young artist in the studio programs of Portland Opera, Kentucky Opera, and El Paso Opera.

This was my first private lesson with Dr. Daniel, most importantly he made me feel very comfortable and I wasn't afraid to sing notes in front of him. Dr.Daniel took the time to gather my history and take notes about what I said. Dr. Daniel was very thorough for our first visit, even though I had only booked my first class to be 30 minutes. My life long passions have been for guitar, music, and business. I received my very first guitar at the age of 12 years old and have been studying, playing, and improvising ever since with over 28 years of experience. I have had the honor to train under some of the finest Guitarists in the Chicagoland area: Dave Uhrich, Eric Mantel, Toshi Iseda, and Tom Hess.

I have performed as lead guitarist on worship teams for over 15 years, currently at Kenosha Bible Church. As the lead guitarist of Aural Groove, I recorded under industry pro Michael Charles of Moonlight Studios. As lead singer and guitarist of Manna (an acoustic duo) I recorded under Rex Carroll of Whitecross.

I teach and train in a method I have coined "8 Cycle Guitar". This approach alternates areas of focus each week; like a fitness program. By routinely rotating through t
he 8 cycles of guitar training, the student gains the skill needed to master the instrument quickly and effectively.
