About Nicholas
Detroit native, Nicholas C. K., demonstrated an innate musical talent from a young age. His command of piano, guitar, trumpet and bass progressed to studies at both Columbia University in Chicago and Wayne State University in Detroit. Since age 16 Nic has toured the country sharing the stage with acclaimed rock acts such as; Tesla, Bret Michaels, 3 Doors Down and many others. He is currently endorsed by Warwick Basses.

Nicholas been a musician in some form or another for as long as he can remember. His musical journey started when he was only six, with a delve into the realm of classical piano. While there he studied under world class child prodigy Josh Cullen. The composers that he studied include Bach, Beethoven, Barton, Hayden and many others.

From here he progressed to playing jazz trumpet, studying the Jamey Aebersold method un
der Paul Finkbeiner, the lead trumpet player for the Paul Keller Ensemble.

Then at the age of 11, with the help of his grandfather he discovered the guitar. He learned quickly on his old SR guitar. He quickly discovered that he had a natural taste for blues phrasing, and his soloing abilities quickly blossomed. 2 years later, he had formed his first band, Spherical. It was through this band that he found the bass.

His journey into the realm of bass, began out of necessity and progressed into love of the bottom end. Since then, he has been collecting basses, playing, living and breathing bass. He now realizes the importance of a funky beat, a subtle line and most important of all A Tight Groove!!!

The benefit of studying under someone with a vast array of both talent and experience is clear.

*** Lesson Details ***
During his musical career Nicholas has played almost every style of music; from folk to experimental from jazz to rock. One thread holds true through all music, it has to groove.
During the course of a lesson he will cover a broad range of topics starting from the basics, and moving into ear training, sight-reading, theoretical knowledge and most important for bass players, groove. Just as every player has their own musical personality and voice, so to does every lesson that Nicholas gives.
In a supportive, patient environment, every lesson is custom tailored to the student.

All the students on my Student YouTube channel who have studied under three years, are practicing 2 hours a week, and you will have a similar result. That's 20 minutes a day, 6 days a week. Students under 5 practice about 10-15 minutes a day.

Please have an assignment book that lies flat, and keep it next to your music books as you practice between lessons. My instructions are very detailed to insure your best progress.

For on-line lessons, you will need a quiet place, and please test your sound and video prior to beginning of lesson. For students under 13 or so, do have a parent or caregiver taking notes while we work together.

After understanding a student's level and what their interests with piano are, I help the student pick a song or a piece to use for lessons that is according to those interests. After a student gains a good understanding of playing a song or a piece, I like to go over ways to change the dynamics (rhythm and note alterations) of the music to explore other kinds of expression through the piano. With this approach, my students may learn to bring logic (technique, scales, theory) and feeling (how the music is played) together. It is also a great introduction to improvisation.

I go over improvisation with students, if desired. This includes such concepts as playing comfortably with both hands, creating melodies, exploring the use of various scales and voice leading. Lastly, if desired, I can include singing in the lessons!

*In order to avoid an awkward schedule, I have limited my availability to a few evenings during the week. However, I am open to working another time that may work best for you.*

I have experience working with people individually and in groups, as an undergrad Psychology intern, a cognitive skills trainer, a counseling student, an adjunct instructor and an academic coach. As an undergrad intern, I worked with elementary school children as a tutor and a mentor. As a counseling student, I have worked with various populations, from grade school students (grades 4-8; making healthier choices) to adults (stress, anxiety, career decisions, bereavement, etc.) to older adults in hospice care. I have facilitated psycho-educational groups with individuals suffering from a mental illness as well. Lastly, I worked with college students at a local u
niversity as an academic coach. In this role, I helped students process concerns and create goals regarding developing time management skills, coping strategies for anxiety, study skills, information processing and motivation. These experiences have helped me gain a continually growing understanding of facilitating the learning process with individuals and with groups.

In this role, I help individuals develop their path of change, making sure motivation and focus is well-maintained. I provide a judgment-free and understanding atmosphere for one to reflect and process concerns as well as work towards making personal changes (e.g. self-actualization, career, anxiety management, lifestyle, life changes) from an existential perspective. I believe that such a space should be available for everyone, so I am especially happy to provide it.

My approach to personal development coaching is based on my therapeutic orientation called Gestalt Therapy (GT). The underlying idea of GT is that awareness is the key initiator of change. Awareness allows one to discern where such things as anxiety, unhappiness, ambivalence, etc. stem from. I believe that it is important for every human being to go through such a process so that peace and awareness within brings peace and awareness to the outer world. I am inspired by and influenced by the ideas of Carl Jung (Analytical Psychology- particularly the Psychological Types) and Carl Rogers (Client-Centered Therapy). I work with grade school students and adults. ACADEMIC COACHING/STUDY SKILLS: Using my passion for education and my insight gained in my few years (so far) immersed in the world of education, I help students (grade school and college) develop areas of their academic life needing improvement. As suggested above, I help students develop time management, learning strategies, coping strategies for anxiety, and motivation (i.e. help them to see the value of learning). Though it is a valuable tool, it is presently not a service that is offered at most schools in the area.

WRITING: As a lover of reading and writing, I understand the value of expressing thoughts, feelings and ideas. As a writer, my focus is on creative writing (mostly short stories presently) and essays. Given my undergraduate and postgraduate experiences, I have written many academic papers, in APA format and in MLA format. I edit and revise papers as well as help individuals develop their writing voice, develop their ideas, develop an approach to structuring writing, maintain consistency with writing and provide genuine feedback. Beyond that, my help with writing is limited to the goals of the the individual.

TWO IMPORTANT THINGS: I strive to maintain a positive collaboration with those I work with. I believe this is one of the most important parts of the process. Also, I promote the idea of Soul. To me, Soul is any sincere display of passion. With Soul, we perform in a most genuine and graceful way. I personally believe that whether one is playing the piano, writing a story, living life, singing, giving a speech or anything (necessarily peaceful), one should do it with Soul.

LASTLY, I am open to: Going beyond my travel radius, at an agreed-upon adjusted rate; working with multiple students, at an agreed-upon adjusted rate; meeting at a public place that is convenient, if it is preferred; and meeting at a student's location, depending on the preferred time and the distance.

I have to give Andrew 5 stars for the first lesson. He really cares about meeting goals specific to the person he is teaching. He started out with some basic exorcises that I can do at home and then we talked about how the lessons can be structured in the future for what I think I need to improve. Max is the most amazing teacher I’ve ever met. And I teach for a living. I am 45 years old. I got piano lessons when I was an elementary and junior high school student for approximately 4 years. Although I liked playing piano, I’d thought that I didn’t have enough talent, in terms of technical skill and emotional expression. In my first lesson, Max taught me how to use my wrist and elbow to make lighter sounds, as well as how to practice in a certain way in order to produce crystal clear sounds for trills and in faster parts, by making a proper space between notes. I never before understood these points and others, despite teaching by others. More importantly, he helped me to be confident in expressing my emotion in my playing. I realized that practicing piano is such a delightful process to be connected to my life memories and to liberate all my emotion attached to them. This is like a therapeutic process. His teaching makes my life more artistic and meaningful. I really appreciate his deep passion for teaching. It is clearly his mission. He is a true teacher, who wants to help people grow as artists in their own right. I just wish that I met him earlier. But I am glad that it is not late for me.

Chordal Ear Training changes everything!

Although classically trained, I have developed a Chordal Ear Training approach that utilizes the full spectrum of both sight-reading and playing 'by ear.'

This gives the student the maximum advantage when learning piano or advanced performance skills. My students learn not only 'piano' but the joy of Music itself.

As a teacher AND performer for many years, I've noticed that 'joy in learning AND playing' is the most important factor in inspiring a student/performer to be diligent and even passionate about their practice. Thus, they become highly motivated, get noticeably better, improve remarkably and quickly, and gain confidence in their ability and talent.

What do Star Wars, Billy Joel and Dallas Holm all have in common?

All three inspired me to attempt to play music.

Music has played a very significant role in my life since high school, where 'study hall' was my chance to first play by ear on a grand piano. I LOVED playing music and singing!

Evidently it 'took.' I sooned gained admission through audition to the University of Tennessee where I studied classical, jazz and vocal music with Dr. Bill Dorn, Dean of Piano, and acclaimed jazz master and author Dr. Jerry Coker.

From the World's Fair to the Biltmore House, I have enjoyed performing at these and many other venues. Yet, teaching is my first love musically.

Over the years I have found teaching not only sight-reading based methods but chordal and ear training to be essential elements of enhancing my students and student
performers.

You see, reading sheet music is only a piece of the pie. When you add ear-training, active listening, performance training, multi-genre analysis, accompaniment and collaboration to the educational mix, students begin to understand and LOVE music.

Once students love music, there is no stopping them! Students practice and PLAY more, and they get better because of their enhanced practicing. It becomes less work and more PLAY!

And passionate students become PERFORMERS! Whether for audiences of one or hundreds, the satisfaction and sense of fulfillment is amazing, and THAT is why I teach. The rewards and excitement are mutual, for the student, for me and their audiences.

I had 2 years of piano lessons as a child followed by 6 years of flute in High School as an intermediate student. After hearing Todd perform at a special event, my life was changed! His passion for performing and playing inspire, engage and transform a room! Of course I wanted to take lessons! As a teacher he took me beyond the fundamentals into theory, key changes, cordal ear training, musical stylizing and so much more. Every instrument has a unique timbre, so I teach students what their chosen instrument's role is and what it's specific sound is used for. I believe that "practice makes progress," so I encourage each student to practice consistently and efficiently. By applying foundational techniques during practice and performance, it will aid in their continual growth and progress as a musician.

Depending on the goals and preference of the student - no matter the instrument - I highly encourage each of my students to learn to read music/chord sheets, understand and maneuver their instruments fluidly, and challenge themselves to pursue music in any and every way they can.

I firmly believe that learning technique and theoretical knowledge is essential to learning any instrument and any style. Focused practice sessions and learning how to listen actively instead of passively will shape a well-rounded musician, and as the teacher, achieving this with every student is my goal and my passion.
