Learn to play your favorite songs fast! With the ukulele's compact size it is easy to make work of the infinite sounds it can create. Chords, not a problem. Melodies, why not? There isn't much you can't do with a ukulele, and if you eventually feel like a bigger instrument might be worth the challenge the techniques will transfer to several others like it!

Online Lessons That Boost Your Ukulele Skills
If you’re a music lover, you’ve almost certainly heard the sound of a ukulele at some point in your musical exploration. The ukulele is used in a variety of settings and genres to provide a sense of whimsy, sweetness, and gentle strumming texture. In fact, many of today’s artists like to experiment with the ukulele by using it to play genres and styles that wouldn’t typically include ukulele, creating an interesting juxtaposition of moods and sounds.
Maybe you’re well acquainted with the signature sound of the ukulele but don’t know much about where it comes from. Though the ukulele is extremely popular all over the world for beginner musicians as well as seasoned experts, the ukulele was only invented around 140 years ago by native Hawaiians.
If you’re not familiar with how a ukulele looks, you may end up mistaking it for a small guitar. Though ukuleles are designed with a very similar body and fretboard to the typical acoustic guitar, they produce a very different sound, mostly due to the type of string they use (nylon instead of steel) and the sheer size of the body. Because ukuleles are smaller than guitars, they create a softer, less resonant sound than guitars that many musicians prefer in order to create a gentler feeling within their music.
Getting to Know the Ukulele
Much like guitars and many other types of instruments, the materials used to build a ukulele will make a huge difference in its ease of playing and the sound it produces. For example, most high-end ukuleles are made of koa wood, which is native to Hawaii, or mahogany, while cheaper models are typically made of plywood or even plastic. Ukuleles made of higher-quality wood will have a richer, more resonant sound than ukuleles made of plastic or lower-quality wood.
Additionally, many potential ukulele players will peruse the different types of ukuleles available depending on their sound and tone quality preferences. The standard type of ukulele, which is what you’ll typically see in most abundance in music stores or onstage being played by performers, is also called the soprano ukulele and employs the instrument’s standard tuning practices.
Those looking for a slightly deeper sound might consider a baritone, bass, or even contrabass ukulele. Baritone ukuleles have a lower tuning than standard or even tenor ukuleles and can provide a deeper, richer sound more similar to a guitar than a typical ukulele. Bass and contrabass have the same tuning as each other but are offset by an octave, making the contrabass model the deepest, most resonant type of ukulele available to musicians.
Benefits of Ukulele Classes
Learning any instrument can provide a host of benefits no matter your age, musical taste, or experience level. Indeed, regular music lessons can provide you with a sense of routine from week to week while also providing you with quantifiable, attainable goals that will improve your self-esteem and encourage you to seek even more useful skills.
With all of these benefits from general music lessons, you may be wondering, why should I choose to take ukulele classes over any other instrument? An important detail to keep in mind is that the possibilities are endless, and as long as you have the time in your schedule, you can learn to play as many instruments as you’d like! However, taking online ukulele lessons does have some distinct benefits that are important to keep in mind as you browse your options.
The ukulele is known for its small size. That means that this instrument is extremely lightweight, easy to hold, and convenient to carry around with you anywhere. This provides the ukulele with an advantage over an instrument like a guitar, which is still somewhat convenient to carry but significantly heavier than a ukulele and more difficult to hold for kids or those with smaller body types.
Additionally, due to the ukulele’s small size, the fretboard is extremely easy for hands of all sizes to maneuver and master. The guitar’s long fretboard can take a good deal of practice to get used to, not to mention the rough feel of steel strings that require regular players to develop callouses. With ukulele classes, you won’t have to worry about developing thicker skin on your fingertips in order to effectively learn and play your instrument.
Find a Ukulele Teacher Online for Fun, Affordable Ukulele Classes
Though messing around with your ukulele on your own can be fun and inspiring, working one-on-one with a highly experienced and trained ukulele teacher will improve your playing and musicality in a major way. No amount of generalized online information can compare to the experience of working in real time with someone who truly knows the ins and outs of the instrument and what to say to improve your technique and performance.
Unfortunately, many potential ukulele students are deterred by the inconvenience and hassle of in-person lessons. If you’re a busy person that simply wants to work on a musical skill in your free time, it can be difficult to fit a weekly ukulele lesson as well as the necessary travel time into your packed schedule. If you relate to this predicament, you can rest assured knowing that there is an alternative that will reap the same results for your ukulele practice: online ukulele lessons.
As long as you have a device with a camera and a microphone as well as a reliable Internet connection, there’s no reason why your online ukulele classes won’t be just as productive and useful as in-person music lessons. With TakeLessons, you’ll have scheduled one-on-one time with a professional music teacher who will work with you on the technique of playing the ukulele, help you learn the songs you want to play, and teach you how to prevent hand, wrist, and arm injuries that can occur from playing incorrectly.
As a beginner, entering a ukulele instructor’s home or teaching studio for the first time can seem extremely intimidating. Online ukulele classes help to remove this negative experience by allowing you to begin working on your new skill with a professional from the comfort and safety of your own home. Plus, you won’t even have to change out of your pajamas in order to sign on for your lesson!
How Can I Find the Right Ukulele Teacher for Me?
The sheer amount of ukulele teachers available on TakeLessons can seem daunting at first. However, our customizable search function can be a huge help. This function features several distinct specifications that you can choose from in order to find a ukulele teacher that will check all of your boxes.
Some of the most significant barriers that potential students face when on the hunt for online ukulele lessons are the price, lesson length, and scheduling availability. Luckily, the TakeLessons customizable search makes it easy to enter in your weekly budget, how long you’d like your lessons to be, and your weekly availability all in one go. Most ukulele classes are offered in 30-minute, 40-minute, or 1-hour intervals and rates start as low as $40 depending on the teacher.
Once you have all of the specifics like rates, lesson lengths, and lesson times out of the way, it can still be difficult to decide which online ukulele teacher you’d like to hire. All of our TakeLessons teachers have extremely impressive resumes that include prestigious schools and conservatories, professional accolades, and many years of teaching experience. Therefore, it’s no wonder that narrowing down your search to just one candidate can seem impossible.
One of the best ways to get to know a teacher’s personality before booking online ukulele lessons with them is to read their reviews left by current and former students. These reviews will give you a clear picture of your potential teacher’s lesson format, their teaching style, and how they make their students feel whether it’s lesson one or lesson one hundred. Additionally, many students will rate their teachers out of five stars to help give potential new students an idea of the quality of instruction that they received.

As far as songs to learn on the ukulele goes, You Are My Sunshine is near the very top of my list to recommend to students. It checks all of the boxes of a good first song to learn: Number 1: It has a very simple and easy to hum melody Number 2: It only has three chords (C Major, F Major, and G Major) in it and is usually played in the key of C (our favorite on Ukulele!) Number 3: It is very recognizable and is somewhat already in our ear, so we don’t have to go in blind and learn it …
