Welcome to my Music Studio where you can learn the skills you need to reach your musical dreams.  It's a privilege to collaborate with students pre-school through retirees.  Together we explore the satisfying process of reaching musical goals. After earning a Bachelor of Music Education, I studied Kodaly Music Education while applying the methodology in school and studio.  I've helped  many students thrive, and I'd love to help you do the same. I offer over 30 years performing and  teaching experience, a genuine enjoyment of people, and a high standard of professional ethics.

Every student receives careful guidance and thorough preparation.  I love getting to know students and tailoring instruction to make learning unfold.  I have a Bachelor of Music Education degree and have taught and performed in many settings.  30+ years of experience along with constant honing of the craft insure a high quality learning opportunity.

I directed the band program which included beginners through high school and conducted an excellent flute ensemble which performed at various venues. I taught classroom music and children's choir for grades K-6 and directed two concerts per year.  I prepared students for solo and ensemble competition.  Currently I teach individual lessons for students from DCS.

I taught private piano lessons to children and adults.

My music duties included high school theory classes, general music K - 12, handbell choirs, and concert choirs.  I also taught private lessons as needed. I presented two concerts per year and prepared students for interscholastic Fine Arts competition.

All piano and voice majors at CSSM participated in handbell choir in which new music was learned each week for a Saturday concert. These groups ranged from novice to very advanced. Additionally I taught private flute, theory class, and master classes.

A beginning string class developed into an active performing group which received a Pennsylvania Arts grant to present live concerts in the Tri-County area. DASSE presented Music History Programs, Music at the Library, school demonstrations, and numerous other events.

The piano is truly a key to understanding music and a pathway to great enjoyment.  I provide an excellent foundation with solid technique and music literacy.  Your tuition includes not only your lessons appointments and my expertise, but also customized materials and prep time.  Part or all of on-line lessons can be recorded and referred to during practice sessions.  Studio lessons are enhanced by enrichment classes and optional performance opportunities. Participation in ensembles is highly recommended and supported.

This practical video presents the simplest method of counting rhythm duration. 

Quick and Easy Rhythm Counting: quarter, half, dotted half, & whole

Purple Bear and Kitty Cat hear fast, medium, and slow beats on the metronome.  Low black keys play Bear Sounds and high black keys play Cat sounds.  Students can choose ANY BLACK KEY to play along with the  differing tempos.  Very easy and very fundamental!

Join Purple Bear and Kitty Cat as they listen to the beat.  Play along using deep sounds (low pitch) and fluffy cloud sounds (high pitch). 

Early Childhood Piano Matching the Beat

Piano Adventures Theory Level 2B pages 23 asks students to predict chords to harmonize a melody.  After that, there is a duet to play.  Use the tips below to practice the duet. 
TIPS:
1.  Listen first while tapping the notes on the page.
2.  Play along using each hand separately.
3.  Then play along using hands together. 

This accompaniment provides some additional aural cues to help you keep your place.

Here Comes the Band! Piano Adventures Theory 2B

Harmony adds texture to music.  The primary triads unlock this depth.  Learn the basics of these important elements of music.

Kids and kids-at-heart can enjoy this blend of art, movement, and music.  While chalk on a sidewalk produces a very satisfying sound, beats can be drawn with any writing utensil on a suitable surface.  
  
1.  steady beats drawn to chant or song
2.  steady beats drawn to instrumental music
3.  steady beats concluded with a gradual slowing


Musical Pulse Chalk Activity

See and hear the right hand for measures 65 - 68. Much of the work here uses parallel 6ths.  This tutorial names and demonstrates the notes as they happen.  It then shows the flow of these four measures using a count-off for students to play along if desired.

This fun hand clapping game is a perfect vehicle for new pianists to form and strengthen an excellent hand shape.  

The student will use four fingers from one hand to develop independent finger movement without sacrificing the natural arch of the hand. 

Both hands are demonstrated. The student can choose which hand to use.  If desired, the student can some of the song with one hand and then switch to the other hand. 

The learning video covers only the first two lines. 
Expand the fun using the play along video for the entire song.
