Piano is the best place to start and stay to make music. While it can be difficult at times the sound of what our fingers can do with just a few keys is phenomenal. With a full range of keys, and literal black and white layout there is nothing better to begin your music journey with!

About Austin

Austin has been playing piano, guitar, and ukulele for nearly two decades. He devotes his time to studying music, and finding the most effective methods to teach students.

Very knowledgeable. Austin has incredible patience and a personalized teaching style that will ensure each lesson is tailored to my daughter's pace and learning preferences.

I recognize his passion for music and teaching when listening in on their lesson. I believe we found a talented and valuable instructor.

Thank you Austin.

I feel really lucky to have ended up taking my first piano lessons with Austin. As an adult, learning has brought a new challenge and sense of humility that has been very rewarding because of Austin’s support and teaching style. He breaks things down in layman’s terms, is super knowledgable, but also very personable. He also has the technology in place to make the lesson barely feel remote. He wants his students to get the most out of their lessons and is great at catering to each student’s needs, whether it be understanding or inspiration. I highly recommend anyone hesitant to take the leap give it a try with Austin.

Both of my children received guitar lessons virtually from Mr. Austin, and they both thoroughly enjoyed it!

Jeff is a seasoned musician and an excellent teacher! I highly recommend Jeff: he understood my music capabilities and learning style and adapted the lessons accordingly. I am new to music playing and Jeff understood.
This enabled me to learn more quickly.

Lessons are most enjoyable. Jeff's teaching technique is unique; he makes the most of the time to teach as much as possible without overwhelming.

Jeff is very pleasant and friendly. He has a great ear so can pickup what hole is being played and whether it's being played correctly. This was over zoom!

The actual student was Vitalii, our ministry assistant at our church; I am the oversight chair who selected Joseph.

We have noticed great improvement in Vitalii's reading and conversational English (Vitalii is from Ukraine). In the 8 months of lessons, Vitalii is more relaxed, more confident, and more spontaneous in his English. The match between Vatilii and Joseph is extraordinary.

I have had occasion to speak with Joseph who worked with me on developing a schedule and focusing on the areas of most need. Joseph is without a doubt, knowledgeable, insightful, and caring. I have no reservations in recommending him for any type of instruction. He is TOPS!

Joseph is an incredible teacher. He has the ability to connect with the student at the student's level. I have zero background in music and he is extremely diligent at teaching me at my level. He uses different tools and methods to make the information accessible. He's also extremely patient. He understands when I show up to class without having practiced: there is also never any judgment. Playing piano is fun! So should your piano lessons.

I've taught piano since I was in high school, and continued to teach while I was a student at Cornell University. I also taught theory classes in the Cornell Piano Society, where I served as President for 4 years.

Why? I simply love music, piano, and sharing it with others.

While I'm classically trained, I've dabbled into other genres, such as Jazz, Rock, Pop, R&B, songwriting, and music production / audio engineering. I've recently been accepted into the Steinway & Sons (the piano makers) Teacher Partnership Program. Feel free to message me for more details!

About Marwan

I started playing piano when I was 3, and began writing music at the age of 6. I've taught music and piano for over 12 years, and tutoring other subjects for over 5 years. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, I graduated from Cornell University in Electrical & Computer Engineering, with a minor in M

Marwan was great at explaining the basics to me and getting me started on some practice. It was fun, also, which I was a little worried about.

I am an adult learner with some high school playing experience, but with many years gap of not playing. My goal of learning is to become more proficient at performing the pieces I know as well as getting into jazz and learning improvisation. Marwan understood this well and tailored the lessons specifically for my needs. I felt the learning path he chose for me was uniquely selected for my mixed backgrounds and very different from your everyday music tutor. For my needs, Marwan stressed on music theories and practical scale and finger exercises that have greatly enhanced my ability to play and pick up new music.

I took lessons with Marwan for 3 months and had to end due to my personal circumstances. I look forward to take lessons with him again in the future.

Deborah is an amazing piano teacher. I am an older student who played as a child and am returning to music later in life. I couldn’t imagine a better piano experience - she is enthusiastic, extremely knowledgeable, and superb at teaching - I have learned so much in only 6 months. Plus she is an expert with the technology! Highly highly recommended!

Deborah is such a kind, patient and knowledgeable instructor. I started fresh last year in my early 30s so it has been quite a challenge to learn. Deborah goes at my pace and never makes me feel rushed and is always willing to answer my many questions. She will answer them in multiple ways if I’m still not grasping something quite right. She wants to be sure that I have the fundamentals in order to improve and grow. I enjoy my lessons immensely and she is flexible in her schedule in case I have to move a lesson to a different day because of my ever changing work schedule. She gives me 100% every lesson and I can see in less than a year how much progress I have made. 10/10 recommend! I seriously can’t say enough nice things about Deborah. If you’re serious about learning the piano and want someone to commit to ensure you succeed - Deborah is the teacher for you! Can’t wait to watch my progress in the future!

Learning Basic Piano Chords Online

As you already know, when you press a piano key, it makes a sound. But did you know that when you press more than one key at a time, it is called a chord? As a beginner, you are likely to notice that the keys of a piano or keyboard have an assortment of black and white keys. You also probably don’t know what they mean or what they do – besides make noise.

Learning how chords work is a necessary part of learning how to read and play sheet music. Songs are written in keys, and they have a key signature that helps to identify the root note. Before diving too deep into the chords, it is best to get a better foundation about what chords are and how they work within the piano playing dynamic.

What Are Piano Chords?

A chord is created when more than one note is played at once. The combination of notes for the chord can be made from two, three, or more notes pressed at one time. Every chord on the piano contains a root note. The root note is the note that the chord is named after and includes one or more of the additional notes.

The most common type of chord for a keyboard or piano is called a triad – a three-note chord. The triad contains a root note and two other notes, most often the notes that produce the intervals a third and fifth above the root.

One way to get the triad’s basic shape is to place your thumb and fingers on the keys (one each). Pushing down with the thumb, middle finger, and pinky create the chord. The thumb is likely your root note in most circumstances.

Piano Keys: Intervals and Notes

The distance that exists between piano notes is called an interval. The interval determines how the notes sound when they are played together. Intervals can be measured in half-steps and whole-steps. Half-steps are the distance from one key to the next key directly to the right or the left. A whole-step is the distance of two half-steps. The common interval used in the piano chords is a “major third,” which is the distance of two whole-step intervals or four half-steps.

You might have noticed that the piano keys follow a pattern. In most lessons, finding middle C is the start of navigating the notes of the piano. The pattern of the black keys follow a pattern of two black keys close together and a group of three black keys close together. This repeats across the piano or keyboard.

Each of the white keys is assigned a letter A, B, C, D, E, F, or G. The black keys are either sharp or flat.

The sharp (#) notes are the black keys that are located to the right of the white note key. The flat (b) notes are the black keys that are located to the left of the white note key.

How Major and Minor Chords Are Produced

For a major chord, you begin with the root note of your choosing. From this note, count up two whole-steps. That creates your “third.” From this note, count up three half-steps, which becomes your “fifth.” When playing these three piano keys together, you produce a major triad. The major triad is described as a happy sound and is used in almost every rock and pop song.

Minor chords are made by choosing your root note and counting three half-steps up to the third. From the third, count two whole-steps to find your fifth. Many of the rock and pop songs out there today use a mixture of major and minor piano chords.

Why You Need an Online Instructor to Learn Piano Chords

Learning the piano can be tough. It can be even tougher if you haven’t had any experience with the piano in the past. That’s okay, though, because we have online instructors who know their way around keyboards and pianos (some even won awards). For beginners, our instructors start slow, teaching the basics of note tones and reading music. Gaining these foundations is essential for learning the different chords.

TakeLessons.com has expert teachers who guide their students in every step of the learning process. Lessons are personally tailored to the student and customized to ensure maximum take-away. The lessons are also 100% guaranteed – if you aren’t satisfied, you can get your unused balance refunded.

How to Find the Right Online Piano Instructor

Finding the right online instructor to teach you the piano keys and piano chords can be done online in under three minutes. If you still need help finding the right instructor, you can call our student counselors at 877-231-8505.

The TakeLessons.com online piano instructors meet the criteria that we have established for all of our instructors. You can meet your instructor online or in-person, depending on your search criteria. Our goal is to provide students with their best instructor match.

How You Know Your Instructor is Good

Learning virtually can be difficult for both instructor and student. Still, those really passionate about their craft will find ways around the hurdles. Like our instructors, good piano teachers make learning the piano fun. Even when there are complicated concepts to learn, the right instructor can make it not seem so difficult.

Even online, instructors can adapt to the individual learning styles of each of their students. That is why we love offering online lessons. Our instructors offer a variety of techniques that make learning more accommodating for all kinds of learners.

Good instructors choose music that matches the level of skill that their student possesses. If you have only mastered hot cross buns, you probably shouldn’t be asked to take on a cheeky rock anthem that is full of major piano chords. You just aren’t ready for that. Instructors should set you up for success, not for failure.

A great piano teacher loves the piano and playing music with it. If they don’t, then they shouldn’t be instructing others to play it. In addition to their love of piano, they also love to teach. A piano teacher who has a knack for teaching in an online classroom is even better for those who need the extra attention (beginners).

Why Learn Piano Chords Online?

We are busy people. We have jobs, families, pets, and other responsibilities that come before our hobbies or learning a new skill.
