Musings on Tonal Center
This question is particularly poignant for me when the subject of modes comes up in music theory. What is tonal center? What influences they way we perceive it? I'm still not sure how to answer that question for myself, let alone holistically. I do hope however that after listening in here you'll have reason enough to posit the same question, if for no other reason that to gain deeper appreciation for your own unique take on harmony.

This 10 minute vocal warmup is intended for anyone looking to develop a daily ritual. The seven exercises included will cover a range of vowels and articulations. Definitions are included in the side bar to help the viewer learn how to correctly sing through these exercises and get the most out of their time practicing.

Chromaticism
This is a brief video describing how I used V/V in the relative harmonic minor of Gb Major (Eb minor) to shape emotional pull in the harmony. A student asked me for an example of a V/V chord used within the context of a song. This progression goes a bit beyond using V/V in the traditional way, and intensifies the resolution to I, by exploiting multiple half step motions before finally resolving to a Gb major chord. The trick here is that I briefly blur the tonal center (Gb major v Eb minor). In the key of Gb major, Bb (iii) is a minor chord. In the key of Eb harmonic minor, III is a major chord. For me personally, chord progressions based on the harmonic minor scale create some of the most distinct cadences, so in spite of deviating from the initial key of Gb major, there is something familiar and exciting about using a Bb major chord here. I then follow a series of half step motions in a couple chords that follow before resolving to Gb major, or the I chord.

It is my effort in this video to explore, somewhat philosophically, a few ways that this particular sequence is exemplified in music. I was tempted to continue — dive head first in the overtone series, though soon realized I might never stop talking if I spiraled down that rabbit hole. Storytelling & Chord Progressions
Sometimes rather than focusing on one idea or one emotion that drives the momentum of a creative idea, it can be helpful to build overarching framework. To see songwriting as a process no different from writing a novel, short story, or even poem can be liberating and elucidating. Part of what makes music exciting and engaging is the way it almost tells us what to feel, so to speak. My hope is that this narrative view of song form will give you new perspective on how to get started, or keep the ball rolling when something inexplicable seems to be amiss.
