I teach the basics of learning acoustic guitar technique including: Selecting an appropriate guitar for the student, correct holding of the guitar, finger and hand placement, guitar notes and scales, guitar tablature, reading and playing guitar chords, strumming and picking, playing guitar songs from most genres and music theory. I also teach electric bass guitar and ukulele, beginner through intermediate. I teach guitar in most genres of music (except hip-hop and rap). Guitar is my main squeeze. I love to help people enjoy the instrument as much as I do. learn to shred a rock solo, fingerpick a folk song, or transcribe miles davis. learn to play what you hear on records without resorting to dodgy you tube instructional videos or tabs. learn to understand the fretboard and use that understanding intuitively and musically. If you are already an accomplished musician, enhance your ability to employ techniques like chord weaving on the guitar, craft better solos, write more sophisticated chord progressions, etc.

Learn How to Play Guitar from Expert Musicians
There are so many instruments available for students of all ages to learn today. However, some instruments have maintained a high level of popularity over the years, attracting fans of all different kinds of music and performance styles. One of these instruments is the guitar.
The guitar’s origins go back as far as 16th century Europe, in which a similar 4-stringed instrument called the lute was widely played by people of all social classes. Though the lute was much smaller than the modern guitar and didn’t have pronounced curves in the midsection, it directly influenced the invention of the guitarra latina, a Spanish instrument also with 4 strings but with the signature side body curves that today’s guitar players are used to.
This generation of the guitar underwent many subtle changes over the centuries, gradually turning it into what we know as the classical guitar today. Classical guitar is still played throughout the world, especially in Spain, and looks very similar to an acoustic guitar but is characterized by its nylon strings. The steel-stringed acoustic guitar was all the rage in American pop and folk music in the early 20th century until the electric guitar was invented in the 1930s, creating a revolution in the way guitar music could be heard and played.
Expand Your Mind and Skillset with Online Guitar Lessons
As you can see, the guitar has a rich and colorful history that is directly tied to several ancient instruments. However, aside from the historical significance of the instrument, the guitar maintains an extremely high level of cultural significance today. Nearly every popular genre of music utilizes guitar playing in some way, especially rock, RnB, and pop.
If you’ve been thinking about taking up an instrument in order to acquire a new skill and make music of your own, it can be difficult to decide which instrument to choose. Even among some of the most popular music lessons to take like voice, guitar, ukulele, piano, and drums, all of the possibilities of these instruments offer different unique benefits and additions to your daily life.
Why Learn How to Play Guitar?
One of the primary reasons that new music students choose to learn how to play guitar is because it is very portable and easy to carry around. Though the guitar isn’t as small and light as the ukulele, it is still light enough for the average person to carry it in its case from place to place without any trouble. Plus, most guitar cases come with zipper pockets for sheet music, capos, tuners, and other gear so you can keep all of your necessary items in one convenient place.
Another significant reason to take up guitar is the fact that this instrument is included in a vast majority of popular music, both present and past. This means that by learning how to play guitar, you’ll have access to an expansive repertoire of legendary songs that you can play in a completely authentic way. Also, since guitar is such a natural addition to so many songs and styles, you’ll be able to easily combine your skills with friends in order to form a band or even just jam once in a while. The guitar is incredibly versatile and has a lot to offer any new player no matter their age, preferred style, or prior training.
Finally, learning how to play guitar will provide you with a completely new skill that you’ll be able to take into all areas of your life. For many, music provides a much-needed escape from their busy lives including work, school, and family; however, the calming effects of listening to music can’t compare to the feeling of playing music yourself.
Learning to play an instrument can provide you with more than just a relaxing activity to give you a break from your other responsibilities. It can also improve several facilities of your mental function including your memory and hand-eye coordination, no matter what age you are. Learning to play music can improve your life in so many ways, and the versatility and wide range of possibilities that the guitar provides is a great place to start.
The Benefits of Online Guitar Lessons
While learning how to play guitar, some will choose to learn on their own through online resources or music books. While this approach can help you to jumpstart your guitar knowledge and abilities, it will only be able to take you so far. Once you’ve learned some basic chords, fingerings, and popular tunes, you may find it difficult to continue to progress with your skill without a teacher.
Taking online guitar lessons is beneficial for new guitarists in many ways. It gives you access to a professional who can give you crucial information about hand and body positionings in order to prevent injury, which happens to musicians more often than you might think. Working with a teacher can also help you to build up your practice more quickly than you would on your own because your teacher can provide you with practice materials that are specific to your level and goals, gradually updating these materials as needed.
If you’re not a trained music educator, you won’t be able to provide yourself with the right levels of music to learn as your skills advance; therefore, you may accidentally keep working on music for too long that’s too easy for you or take on a song that is way beyond your skill level, causing you to become frustrated and potentially give up the instrument altogether. Your online guitar teacher will be able to expertly lead you through your practice week by week and make sure that you’re always playing songs that challenge you enough to improve your playing skills but not so much that you become discouraged.
Additionally, having a guitar teacher means you’ll have someone to hold you accountable to practice and continually improve your skills. This can be difficult for students learning how to play guitar to maintain on their own, especially for adults who have busy lives and may end up prioritizing other things over their guitar practice without a teacher to encourage them.
How to Find Online Guitar Lessons
Finding an amazing guitar teacher online is easy at TakeLessons. Our site features a wide variety of teachers with different backgrounds and training of their own that are open to teaching several age ranges and styles. Plus, you can find a teacher that is available in your ideal price and schedule range with just a few clicks of your mouse by using our customizable search function.
With so many well-qualified teachers available, many of our potential students become overwhelmed by the idea of making a choice. However, the first step to narrowing down your search is deciding on a few key factors. How much am I willing to spend per week to learn how to play guitar? Where can I realistically fit online guitar lessons into my schedule? The answers to these questions as well as your age, skill level, and whether you prefer lessons in English or Spanish will instantly narrow your search so that you’ll be able to more easily pick the perfect candidate.
Choosing Your Online Teacher
If you don’t have a musical background and don’t know much about high-level musical training, you may not feel comfortable choosing an online teacher based upon where they went to school or what musical accolades they’ve received. Luckily, there are several other distinct qualities that you can use to judge whether or not you feel comfortable taking lessons with an online teacher.
The first metric to take a look at is how long your teacher has been teaching. On nearly every teacher’s personalized profile on TakeLessons, you’ll see the year that they started teaching advertised. Some of our teachers have only been in the business for a few years, but some have been teaching for over 10 years at this point. Teachers with more years under their belt aren’t necessarily superior to newer teachers, but some potential students really value having an instructor with more experience.
Next, we recommend checking the reviews left by previous and current students on each teacher’s profile. This is where you can get the clearest sense of how your prospective teacher organizes their lessons from week to week, what their personality is like, and how effective their students found them to be. It will be difficult to find a teacher on our site without glowing reviews, but the reviews will allow you to make detailed decisions based on personality type and lesson style.
If you’ve looked over a teacher’s profile thoroughly and still have questions, you can always send your potential teacher a private message before booking any lesson times. This will allow you to gain more information about the teacher’s teaching methods, personality, and priorities when it comes to guitar lessons, providing you with some much-needed insight on whether or not the teacher is right for you and your goals.
