If you’re trying to decide whether to book a lesson with Andrew- do it. Seriously, you will not regret it. Finding a good music teacher is hard- just because someone can play doesn’t mean they can teach. Andrew is that rare combination of great musician and great teacher, and anyone would be lucky to learn from him. He’s knowledgeable, committed, prepared, and invested- I came to him with the goal of becoming a professional musician, and everything in my lessons has been structured with that goal in mind. He has a wealth of knowledge on everything from music theory to gear to life as a working musician, which he is always happy to share. I can’t begin to express how satisfied I am as a student and how grateful I am to be able to be taught by him. Plus, he’s just a really awesome guy. So really, go ahead and click the “book lesson” button. It’ll be the best decision you make in your musical journey- it’s definitely been mine.

I teach all levels of guitar in the areas of rock, blues and jazz, but I really focus more on the musical skills need to play guitar in any style. These include a thorough chord vocabulary, experience playing rhythm guitar, and a complete progressive study of scales and their use in improvisation (lead guitar) starting with pentatonic scales and progressing to major scales, different forms of minor scales and modes. All scales are learned in multiple positions and the student learns to perform with them in any key. In every lesson the student and I play exercises and study materials together to make actual music from the materials being studied.

About Dennis

I have been teaching guitar for 25 years in the Washington DC metro area. I work with students 12 years of age and up, but I am especially experienced at teaching adult students regardless of whether they are beginners or have previous guitar experience. I have performed in acoustic Celtic, new age,

I've been taking weekly online guitar lessons with Dennis for a little over a year now and I have nothing but good things to say. Dennis brings decades of playing and teaching experience to the table and it shows in each lesson.

Dennis is particularly great at tailoring the lesson material to the abilities and experience of the student. I had been self learning guitar for about 2 years before signing up for lessons with Dennis. In our first lesson, he got an idea of my skill and interests and built the lessons off of that. I am personally interested in jazz guitar and Dennis holds a wealth of knowledge in that department as well as many other genres and styles.

Ultimately, the greatest thing about Dennis' teaching method is that he helps you pursue your interests and goals and provides you with the tools and information to do so. You won't be spending any time practicing anything you don't feel is relevant to your interests.

Another note I'd like to add is that I have never felt looked down on or judged by Dennis throughout my year of lessons. I know this is common concern among adult beginners like myself (I am currently in my late 20's). I can assure anyone reading this that Dennis is a true professional and conducts his lessons in a stress-free, peer-to-peer manner.
Tom
Dennis has been a wonderful guitar teacher and mentor for me over the last 18 months or so. I am in my mid-50s and was starting essentially as a beginner when I signed up to work with Dennis. Thanks to Dennis' patient and individualized approach, I have made great strides and am pleased with how I have progressed. While he is a very accomplished guitarist, he is also a very experienced teacher. Dennis' teaching approach is not to ask the student to follow a rigid learning plan or replicate the journey he took to mastering the guitar, but rather focuses on tailoring the lessons to the student's abilities, musical interests, time constraints, learning modes, etc. The bottom line is that I enjoy working with Dennis each week and practicing what he has taught me.

The pandemic has obviously thrown a big wrench into the giving of guitar lessons. Before, Dennis was teaching me at his house. We now meet online using the Takelessons platform. Online lessons took some getting used to and are clearly not optimal, but I think Dennis has become more and more adept at making it work as well as possible.

I heartily recommend Dennis as a guitar teacher.

Francesca is wonderful. My son has developed a love of learning piano and reading music. He looks forward to every lesson. I have never had to remind him to practice- he seeks opportunities to share what he is learning and is eager to share his progress with Francesca every week. She is supportive and motivating. I know she loves to develop a love music in her students by her obvious dedication to developing their love and understanding of music.

My 7 year old son won't stop singing so I figured I'd put him in some lessons. She's a good mix of patient and fun while still keeping him on track. I thought it would just be a lot of scales, but she teaches him all aspects about singing/performance and uses his favorite genres to teach them. Excellent instructor!

I've been working with Francesca for a few months now, and I feel I've grown so much. Prior to this I've sparsely attempted to play instruments, but she has taken her knowledge and passion and been able to pass that on to me while constantly reminding me that one day I will be good. And I believe it! I've come a long way to establish a regular practice routine, still working on it with her, and I have high expectations for the future. I recommend her to my own people and I recommend her to you.

Learn Beginner Guitar Songs Fast

It’s important to learn the fundamentals of guitar, like the anatomy of the instrument, the proper positioning and posture when playing, and of course, the placement of notes along the fretboard. But if you’re like most beginner guitar players, you’re eager to learn your first beginner guitar songs.

Playing a full song by yourself is a totally different experience than experimenting with notes, playing scales, or practicing chords. You can feel like you’re a part of the music – and possibly show off to your friends.

That said, some guitar songs are ridiculously complicated, and some are actually bad for beginners to learn because they skip over or ignore important fundamentals.

So which beginner guitar songs should you learn first?

What Makes an Easy Guitar Song for Beginners?

There are many ways to learn guitar. You can try to teach yourself or take guitar lessons. You can focus on scales or chords and work from there.

But no matter what, you’ll need to learn and play songs if you want to progress.

The most logical way to start is with easy guitar songs for beginners, so what are the hallmarks of these songs?

  • Slow, steady tempo. Great beginner guitar songs often feature a slow, steady, and predictable tempo. That way, you’re not going to fall behind as you’re playing along.
  • A limited number of chords. Complicated jazz chords will strain your fingers and be easy to forget. Instead, it’s better to focus on simple chords (and a limited number of them).
  • Short and simple. Beginner guitar songs are usually relatively short, with a simple verse-chorus-verse-chorus structure.
  • No crazy solos. It’s fun to imagine yourself shredding an amazing solo. Don’t worry, you’ll get there eventually. But for now, we need songs that are more approachable and easier to learn.

That’s not to say you can’t find beginner guitar songs that bend these qualities. In fact, any song you enjoy learning could potentially be a beginner guitar song. But for the most part, these qualities are best when looking for easy guitar songs for beginners.

Easy Guitar Songs for Beginners

Now let’s take a look at some easy guitar songs for beginners. With the right mindset, you should have no trouble mastering these basics.

Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door (Bob Dylan)

Who doesn’t love Bob Dylan? Known for his poetic and insightful lyrics, Bob Dylan was also a skilled guitar player – but none of his songs are going to utilize crazy chords or techniques.

With Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door, you’ll only have to learn 4 chords, and they happen to be simple ones: G, D, Am, and C. These 4 chords will serve you well in a variety of other songs as well.

The only truly tricky thing to master here is the timing of your strum pattern. Listen to the track to get a feel for the rhythm and try to replicate it on your own.

Smoke on the Water (Deep Purple)

Smoke on the Water is often presented as the first song a guitar player learns – so much that it’s actually a joke in the community. But there’s a good reason for it.

The song introduces you to power chords, which are simple, 2- or 3-note chord structures that can be replicated anywhere on the fretboard. They’re a staple of rock music and are easy to master. The signature opening riff of the song is legendary, but remarkably simple to play; once you get it down, the rest of the song will be a breeze.

Twist and Shout (The Beatles)

No list of beginner guitar songs would be complete without at least one Beatles tune. Here, we have Twist and Shout, which was a cover song – but this is a great version of it.

This song is exclusively made up of open chords and the sections repeat frequently. You’ll spend most of your time on just 3 chords (D, G, and A). Once you’re feeling more confident, you can start trying to learn some of the little riffs, fills, and solos played by George Harrison to fill things out.

Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana)

No 90s kid could resist the urge to play air guitar along to this song, but it’s quite easy to learn on your own, even if you have minimal experience playing guitar. Again, you’ll be relying heavily on power chords. The opening riff of the song is repeated in the chorus, and includes just 4 power chords, starting on F. In the verse, you’ll only be responsible for playing 2 notes.

Even the solo isn’t that hard to learn. You’ll follow along with the melody sung in the verse, adding a few bends when the song calls for it; if you don’t get the bends right away, don’t worry. Just focus on the rest of the song in the meantime.

Wonderwall (Oasis)

Don’t bust this one out at the first party you attend after learning guitar. It’s such an easy song to learn on guitar that it’s become a meme in its own right. But it’s definitely worth learning!

Most of the song dwells on a sequence of 4 open chords, repeated over and over. You’ll need a capo for this song, but it’s not hard to use. The tricky part is nailing the complex rhythm executed by the band – it will take you a few times to get it right, but once you do, you’ll never forget it.

Have You Ever Seen the Rain? (CCR)

A classic by Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR), Have You Ever Seen the Rain? is a classic song with a classic chord progression. In the verse, you’ll only need to know 2 chords – C and G – and in the chorus, the only hang-up is a walkdown, where you’ll modify basic chords with a slightly different finger placement.

It’s also a short song, so once you begin to master it, you can play it over and over without worrying about your endurance.

Wildest Dreams (Taylor Swift)

Classic rock has dominated this list of beginner guitar songs, and for good reason – classic rock often features prominent guitar work and memorable riffs and melodies. But there are also great examples to be found in the modern music scene.

For example, take Wildest Dreams, a song from Taylor Swift in 2015. With a slow, steady tempo, and simple instrumentation, you should have no trouble hearing (and eventually learning) what she’s playing. You’ll only need to know 5 chords for this entire song, including C, E minor, D, G, and A minor – some of which you should have already learned from the other songs on this list.

Where to Go From Here?

So you’ve mastered all the easy guitar songs for beginners on this list. Where do you go from here?

One option is to look up more easy guitar songs for beginners. There are thousands of popular songs that are easy for beginners to learn. Look up the tabs or be even more daring and try to learn the songs by ear – now that you know some of the most common and basic chords in pop music, you should be able to pick them out on your own.

If you want to graduate to something more complicated, you can start looking for intermediate guitar songs – songs with trickier riffs, some more aggressive playing, and some light solo work. These will take a longer time to learn, but once you’re more experienced, they’ll seem a lot more fun.

But one of the best things you can do is sign up for online guitar lessons. With a one-on-one instructor, you’ll be able to perfect your playing technique and learn a wide variety of different songs, scales, and chords. We offer a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee on your first lesson, so there’s nothing to lose – sign up for your first lesson today!
