Bagpipes

As a former school teacher and understanding what it's like  to learn a new subject like an instrument and the Bagpipes on top of that - I knew I wanted to learn how to play because I just Loved the sound from the pipes!  So what's it going to take, what's involved, how much time do I have to put in and is it really that hard.  I was nervous at first like many students because I too never played an instrument.  So... I started out on a "Chanter" along with a book and learned so many cool notes and proper fingering. Then some more notes and then a tune. I had instruction early on which I am grateful for.  I remember like it was yesterday.  Like other things in life if you want to do something you will find a way. Practice 15 minutes a day will work. The chanter is quiet - great for inside - super to learn on. A must and it was just a major blast!  I practice the chanter every day for years now. It's my go to-   That is where we start and build up to play the Bagpipes. Proper technique is a biggy but you will get the hang of it.  If I can do it - so can you!  I play the Scottish Highland Bagpipes.

The Scottish American Society of South Florida, Inc. began in 1983 when a group of Scots and Scottish Americans got together to put on a festival in Key Biscayne to introduce South Florida to the rich culture of Scotland. Although there were several local bagpipe bands, Scottish dance groups and social clubs there was no coordinated local celebration of Scottish Heritage.After the success of that first Scottish Highland Games and Festival, the group decided to incorporate as a not for profit organization and achieved 501(c)3 status in January, 1985. The Festival &amp; Games became an annual event, growing to a top attendance of over 8000. The SE Florida Scottish Festival &amp; Games are well known around the country for the high quality of its organization and featured entertainment. This has included world champion pipe bands and internationally known Scottish and Scottish-American entertainers, including Alex Beaton, Alasdair Fraser, Maggie Sansone, Charlie Zahm, Ed Miller, Albannach, Seven Nations, Rathkeltair, Glengarry Bhoys, MudMen, and Off-Kilter.

Florida Pipe and Drum Academy is committed to offering the very best bagpiping and drumming tuition to pipers and drummers of whatever background, and at whatever level of ability. Our aim, firstly, is to focus on each student and, through detailed guidance and practice, to effect a significant improvement in their playing ability. Group learning and band work will also be a priority to ensure all students have the ability to play within a band. Only the very best teachers are employed by the Academy and they will follow a curriculum as outlined in Principal Wallace's tutor books (pipers) and courses structured by our Grade 1 drumming instructors. A full examination program will be on offer for all students, though not compulsory. The Piping & Drumming Qual;ifications Board Exams are an option but much more relevant will be the FPDA's own exams.

Our lessons will be encouraging, positive and productive but most importantly will layer in love and Fun! I am here to help you in a friendly manner as a classroom  teacher for over 15 years.   Achieve your goals from newbies to more seasoned pipers.  Curriculum is individualized based on student’s musical interests. Students will learn proper technique and important musical concepts like reading notes, sight-reading and playing tunes before you know it.  We work together and have fun along the way!  All ages welcome and all levels.  I enjoy watching students gain confidence and learn more about themselves during lessons. Toni is an excellent educator and bagpipe tutor. I'm getting on in years and after emigrating from Scotland as a young man about 35-years prior, I have always had the desire to learn how to play the pipes. I have now been learning the chanter with Toni for a few weeks and appreciate her patience as she teaches me the nuances of piping so that the lesson is enjoyable and easy to follow. When I decided to learn to play the bagpipes I realized very quickly that I needed help from an experienced instructor. I have a musical background and I didn't need help with fingering, or reading music. I needed help with bagpiping. The bios of the other instructors touted their excellence as pipers, but Toni's explained her ability as a teacher. The lessons did not disappoint! As the very best teachers do, Toni adjusted her instruction to exactly what I needed right then. She provided great explanation of what to do and how to do it. She provided support when things were going well and guidance when they weren't. With her help and encouragement I played (comfortably and confidently) the bagpipes at my Mom's memorial service just two months after the first time I picked up a set of pipes. For beginning pipers I cannot recommend Toni highly enough. Many Thanks!
