If you’re trying to decide whether to book a lesson with Andrew- do it. Seriously, you will not regret it. Finding a good music teacher is hard- just because someone can play doesn’t mean they can teach. Andrew is that rare combination of great musician and great teacher, and anyone would be lucky to learn from him. He’s knowledgeable, committed, prepared, and invested- I came to him with the goal of becoming a professional musician, and everything in my lessons has been structured with that goal in mind. He has a wealth of knowledge on everything from music theory to gear to life as a working musician, which he is always happy to share. I can’t begin to express how satisfied I am as a student and how grateful I am to be able to be taught by him. Plus, he’s just a really awesome guy. So really, go ahead and click the “book lesson” button. It’ll be the best decision you make in your musical journey- it’s definitely been mine.

I teach all levels of guitar in the areas of rock, blues and jazz, but I really focus more on the musical skills need to play guitar in any style. These include a thorough chord vocabulary, experience playing rhythm guitar, and a complete progressive study of scales and their use in improvisation (lead guitar) starting with pentatonic scales and progressing to major scales, different forms of minor scales and modes. All scales are learned in multiple positions and the student learns to perform with them in any key. In every lesson the student and I play exercises and study materials together to make actual music from the materials being studied.

About Dennis

I have been teaching guitar for 25 years in the Washington DC metro area. I work with students 12 years of age and up, but I am especially experienced at teaching adult students regardless of whether they are beginners or have previous guitar experience. I have performed in acoustic Celtic, new age,

I've been taking weekly online guitar lessons with Dennis for a little over a year now and I have nothing but good things to say. Dennis brings decades of playing and teaching experience to the table and it shows in each lesson.

Dennis is particularly great at tailoring the lesson material to the abilities and experience of the student. I had been self learning guitar for about 2 years before signing up for lessons with Dennis. In our first lesson, he got an idea of my skill and interests and built the lessons off of that. I am personally interested in jazz guitar and Dennis holds a wealth of knowledge in that department as well as many other genres and styles.

Ultimately, the greatest thing about Dennis' teaching method is that he helps you pursue your interests and goals and provides you with the tools and information to do so. You won't be spending any time practicing anything you don't feel is relevant to your interests.

Another note I'd like to add is that I have never felt looked down on or judged by Dennis throughout my year of lessons. I know this is common concern among adult beginners like myself (I am currently in my late 20's). I can assure anyone reading this that Dennis is a true professional and conducts his lessons in a stress-free, peer-to-peer manner.
Tom
Dennis has been a wonderful guitar teacher and mentor for me over the last 18 months or so. I am in my mid-50s and was starting essentially as a beginner when I signed up to work with Dennis. Thanks to Dennis' patient and individualized approach, I have made great strides and am pleased with how I have progressed. While he is a very accomplished guitarist, he is also a very experienced teacher. Dennis' teaching approach is not to ask the student to follow a rigid learning plan or replicate the journey he took to mastering the guitar, but rather focuses on tailoring the lessons to the student's abilities, musical interests, time constraints, learning modes, etc. The bottom line is that I enjoy working with Dennis each week and practicing what he has taught me.

The pandemic has obviously thrown a big wrench into the giving of guitar lessons. Before, Dennis was teaching me at his house. We now meet online using the Takelessons platform. Online lessons took some getting used to and are clearly not optimal, but I think Dennis has become more and more adept at making it work as well as possible.

I heartily recommend Dennis as a guitar teacher.

I've played and worked with students on Bach sonatas, Dylan/Donovan style fingerpicking, jazz comping and solos, rock, metal and punk riffs, Steve Vai-esque two-hand tapping, as well as songwriting, music theory, and aural skills, so no matter what kind of music you like or how you're looking to improve, chances are I can help take you do it. Brendon was very helpful getting past anxieties with getting started and feeling overwhelmed by all the possible ways you can go about making music. Francesca is wonderful. My son has developed a love of learning piano and reading music. He looks forward to every lesson. I have never had to remind him to practice- he seeks opportunities to share what he is learning and is eager to share his progress with Francesca every week. She is supportive and motivating. I know she loves to develop a love music in her students by her obvious dedication to developing their love and understanding of music.

My 7 year old son won't stop singing so I figured I'd put him in some lessons. She's a good mix of patient and fun while still keeping him on track. I thought it would just be a lot of scales, but she teaches him all aspects about singing/performance and uses his favorite genres to teach them. Excellent instructor!

I've been working with Francesca for a few months now, and I feel I've grown so much. Prior to this I've sparsely attempted to play instruments, but she has taken her knowledge and passion and been able to pass that on to me while constantly reminding me that one day I will be good. And I believe it! I've come a long way to establish a regular practice routine, still working on it with her, and I have high expectations for the future. I recommend her to my own people and I recommend her to you.

Acoustic Guitar for Beginners

Few sounds are as noticeable as the strum of an acoustic guitar. The origins of stringed instruments go back to the Hittite Empire, with reliefs showing up lute-like instruments used in religious ceremonies. The guitar is a new iteration of a cultural musical instrument that spans millennia and spreads through modern culture. The contemporary acoustic guitar is the culmination of thousands of years of technological innovation to produce a device that is both portable and versatile in what it offers to a player.

In the recent past, with the growth and expansion of pop and rock music, we have seen many instrumentalists move away from the humble acoustic guitar. While the acoustic guitar offers a great learning potential, most professionals opt for better-adapted instruments for use in a studio. While the acoustic guitar can be retrofitted to pick up its tones and sounds, the music produced is rarely as clean or crisp as if it were recorded through a studio-specific setup. Even so, hundreds of professional guitarists learned their trade on the humble acoustic guitar. The principles of playing guitar remain constant, regardless of what other types of guitar you choose to learn to play afterward.

The modern acoustic guitar does still have many fans among musicians. Many teachers of acoustic guitar for beginners use popular songs to build their students up to more complex elements. Several artists still rely on their handy acoustic guitar to start writing songs. Today's most famous artists write and perform their own songs on a variety of instruments but usually started with the acoustic guitar. By choosing to learn this instrument, a student is following in the steps of many stars before them.

What Type of Guitar Should I Have?

Acoustic guitars come in several varieties, and based on the construction, the tone may vary. The earliest acoustic guitars were created out of solid wood strung with nylon or catgut strings. Today's nylon-stringed guitars are the standard for learning. Many musicians began their careers using nylon-strung guitars. At the turn of the 20th century, guitar construction changed significantly. Martin started producing steel-stringer guitars, which required reinforcement to take the tension that they delivered on the instrument's body. A little later in the 20th century, solid wood construction started to give way to laminate construction. While laminate was cheaper to make, they vibrated far less than a solid wooden guitar. The result was a flatter, more expansive tone when compared to the solid wood construction.

The three significant types of steel-string guitars vary in their bodies' size and the tone they produce. Dreadnought guitars have full bodies and are usually used by performers in public because of the depth of their tone. Smaller, more intimate performances usually use Parlor guitars, which have a less substantial body but allow for a better definition of pitches and tones. The middle ground between the parlor and the dreadnought is the OM body type. These are perfect for hitting the sweet spot between the two extremes of steel guitars.

Nylon-stringed guitars are also divided up into three broad categories. Classical guitars are those designed specifically for playing classical music. They have a similar body shape and size to an OM guitar. Flamenco guitars are used for playing flamenco music and usually come with a plastic plate called a "top-plate" to facilitate the tapping that's such an integral part of this style of playing. Hybrids and crossovers combine some elements of acoustic guitars and other types of guitars (electric, bass, etc.). These hybrid guitars don't have any specific defining characteristics but tend to be louder the larger the instrument is.

Today, as a beginner, you can learn on any guitar you want. Many beginners prefer nylon-stringed instruments since they are easier on your fingers. If you do learn on a nylon-stringed guitar, you'll be able to play a steel-stringed guitar as well. Over your lessons, your instructor will teach you how to restring and tune your guitar as well, so that when you choose the next guitar, you'll own, you'll be prepared to set it up just the way you like it. Advanced lessons will even teach you alternate and unique tunings for your guitar and inform you why they're used and whether they make sense to learn.

Why Apply For Online Guitar Lessons?

If you're listening to some of your favorite songs on the radio and want to take a stab at reproducing them, learning to play an acoustic guitar is an excellent investment. Online lessons open up the industry to more people. A skilled teacher can have you going from a complete beginner into a skilled intermediate in no time at all. Most beginners have a hard time sticking with the instrument because it can be challenging to learn independently. Online lessons offer you flexibility in when you take your classes and where you decide to practice.

It's important to remember that your success as a budding guitarist comes down to more than just deciding to take up the guitar. Your lessons are only going to be as useful as the amount of time you dedicate to practicing. Unlike other fields, the performing arts usually need a lot more practice than theory. A skilled instructor will balance their teaching between the theoretical and the practical. Opting for an online tutor allows you more time to practice and gives you a stress-free method of learning a useful instrument.

A Few Benefits of a Professional Acoustic Guitar Tutor

A good teacher has a plan. At TakeLessons.com, we offer you tutors that have proven the success of their planning through scores of students that have come before you. Experts who offer lessons on our site are trained in playing the guitar, but they're also excellent teachers. You'll quickly learn from them the best way to hold a guitar and form the most common chords, as well as how to move from one chord to another. Beginners especially will have an easy time picking up the most popular guitar chords. With a focus on linking theory and practice, intermediate learners will quickly figure out how to improvise on the fly so that their music sounds great.

When you decide to learn acoustic guitar, you'd be surprised at how much the first few lessons cover. The expert instructors from TakeLessons.com use their skill in playing guitar to help students with the fundamentals. The learning experience is complete, with each class geared towards assisting students in coming to terms with concepts and seeing those concepts in action. The one-on-one nature allows for a more in-depth tutorial. You can consult with your instructor about your playing and ask them questions about ideas and forms you may be having trouble with.

Find an Online Guitar Teacher That Suits You

What sets TakeLessons.com apart is our dedication to finding a teacher that suits you. You can go through their profile pages and see their level of professional and educational background to streamline your final choice. We even allow you to contact teachers and ask them questions before signing on with them. It's never been easier to find an acoustic guitar instructor.

The best part about having lessons online is the flexibility. Guitars are already portable, meaning you can carry them anywhere you go. Even if you do not intend to be a poet and a one-man-band, you can still have your lessons anywhere you feel like it, as long as you're able to connect to the internet. "Outstanding teacher

I am 35 and this is my first foray into music. I have always wanted to learn to play the guitar and finally got one last Thanksgiving. I tried to learn via online resources but quickly realized one needs hands on personal instruction as one starts out. Juan had great reviews and I decided to get some lessons to get started with him last January. That has been the best decision I could have taken, even better than buying a Guitar! He is a thorough professional who totally understands students needs, limitations, and learning curve. I am a busy professional and am frequently traveling or entertaining business partners. Juan structures my learning according to my interests and time available, and is flexible about scheduling. He is very encouraging and makes a newbie feel comfortable about his bumbling yet evolving guitar skills. If you read his profile on this site, you would understand the thoughtful mental process that he employs to help students reach their individual goals. I would recommend Juan not only as a guitar teacher but a solid individual in all respects."

His energy, talent, knowledge of all kinds of music and easy going, relaxed personality has made lessons fun and without stress. Nate prepares and goes out of his way to research and find things for me to learn and work on. He is able to come up with things on the fly that can benefit you while in the lesson. He communicates very well, and explains more complex things in a way you can understand them and if not…he’s very easy to talk to and I don’t’ feel embarrassed to as those “stupid” questions.
