Cynthia M.

Gurnee, IL

I am a dynamic and energetic flute instructor with a Master's degree in flute from the University of Florida where I was the applied faculty instructor to all undergraduate minors.

About Cynthia

I attended Wright State University, where I graduated with Latin honors in June of 2007 with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education.

Among the numerous honors I received during my matriculation at Wright State University, I was on the Deans List every quarter, and won the highest distinction offered by the Department of Music by winning the coveted Wright State University Concerto Night Competition in February of 2007. I was also a 2004 and 2006 winner of the department Honors Recital, and a recipient of the WSU Chamber Players “Beethoven Award. In June of 2004, I joined the Wright Stat
e University Wind Symphony on a tour of Japan, where I performed as a featured soloist.

In the fall of 2007, I began my graduate studies for a Master of Music in music performance degree at the University of Florida. While working towards my degree, I served as a graduate teaching assistant for the flute studio at the University of Florida. I taught MUS 2450, an undergraduate course in instrumental skills, was the applied flute instructor to undergraduates pursuing a minor in flute performance, and gave masterclasses and lecture-presentations to the flute studio on performance practices, the history of the flute, and important pedagogical figures in flute.

My teaching experiences include working with several high school bands in Ohio and Florida and serving as Assistant Director for Flutopia, a summer flute camp experience. I have taught private music lessons for 12 years. As a staff member at the Interlochen Arts Camp, I studied flute with the principal flutist of the San Antonio Symphony, Tallon Perkes, and worked as a guest clinician for the Junior Division band.
Professionally, I was a contracted flutist with the Ocala Symphony for two years while I worked on my graduate degree in flute.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a dynamic and energetic teacher. Lessons with me usually involve me wildly gesticulating and moving around to illustrate a passage.

I have method books that I do tend to use with most students, but for those just starting with me, we usually start with whatever they already have (even if that's just a band method book). Usually we can start there and then branch out as needed. I encourage note taking during lessons. So, a notebook and pencil for flute lessons is a necessity. Some of my students find that they get the most out of recording their lesson and listening to the play back of their lesson to pick up things they missed in the moment. If you have something to bring to record your lesson, please feel free to bring that! I've recorded lessons on my iPhone and emailed them to my students and parents before.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I teach out of my apartment in a combined living room/dining room. I have a mirror and comfortable seating for parents in the living room.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical music and flute music of Brazil.

Great Teacher!

I really enjoyed the lessons I had with Cynthia; not only did she make playing the flute fun, but she really helped me get a better grasp on some techniques that I was having a little bit of trouble with!

Not only is she a great and understanding teacher, she is a fantastic musician; two of the most important things I believe you need in a private instructor.

Super talented - Great Personality - Excellent Teacher

I could not think of a better teacher to teach my beginning, intermediate or advanced flutist. Cynthia is truly an amazingly talented musician and just as kind and nurturing of a teacher. I give her my highest recommendation!

Charis B.

Woodstock, IL

About Charis

I have a B.S. in Music Education. I have worked with several disabled students patiently guiding them, finding creative ways to make music accessible to them. I believe it is not about me or the parent, but the student. I work with children of all ages believing that we can find a way that works so that in a few months you see results. Anyone can learn to sing or play but not everyone is going to enjoy it without the right approach and teacher. I don't want to hear a student say that the teacher didn't listen to me, they wouldn't entertain my ideas.
In my studio I have two piano's and
a keyboard. We have monitors and microphones and the ability to record. I encourage the composer to the pop music player, from the classical artist to the Broadway singer.
Currently, I have several students that compose their own music, helping one of those students to become a copyrighted artist.

*** Lesson Details ***
For the child I have had the most success with the Bastien method and for the Adult pianist I usually use Alfred's method books. I constantly have access to musicnotes.com to download any current or older hit in addition to the method books. I want you to learn to note read and then to play by chords. I never want the student to lose their creative, artistic ability. They should feel welcome at all times to add input to the lesson. I want you to have fun learning and find the ability in you to make music. Please contact Takelessons if a time does not suit your availability. I may be able to work something out.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Her own private music studio w/ piano, seating for parents. I have vocal equipment, microphones and monitors

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will have a music bingo game with me and whatever else is needed to supplement the lesson

*** Specialties ***
I teach any style and method that is needed. I teach note reading and playing classical music to playing by chords and learning how to split the voicing

Daniel K.

Chicago, IL

About Daniel

Daniel, a former faculty member of Columbia College in Chicago, is a studio and live performance singer and musician based in Chicago. His teaching and performing experience spans three decades, and includes expertise in the studies of voice, guitar, piano, bass, drums, and trumpet, along with music theory, arranging, and composing. He is a Lincoln Academy Student Laureate who holds a BA in Music Composition, and has attended graduate courses in education at Roosevelt University and DePaul University in Chicago. He has taught students of all ages at private studios, public school, and college.

Daniel is described by his students as a natural teacher. He prefers to be regarded as an advancing student, and takes the journey along with his students to guide them towards their goals with a friendly, positive, efficient and productive approach. He feels that music is within all of us, and a desire to learn is a sign of talent, so anyone can develop their musical abilities with methodical practice.

The musical journey for Daniel began at an early age with trumpet and piano studies which became a passion for him by the age of 14. He was the drum major of the high school marching band, and successfully completed a paid contract to arrange music for the high school jazz band which performed in a state beauty pageant. He began teaching privately after high school, and continued playing in bands, and composing original music. He formed a professional jazz ensemble under the name of the Chicago Jazz Players by the age of 22, and developed his arranging techniques while having it performed by an eighteen piece orchestra consisting of many great local artists. It was in this environment that he gained experience with brass, woodwinds, and rhythm instruments. He was granted a position at Columbia College as an instructor at age 29 where he taught theory, sight singing, musicianship, ear training, harmony, orchestration, and composition. He scored the music for several plays, and conducted his own pieces with Chicago Symphony and Lyric Opera Players. During those years he found himself playing the guitar and singing more than anything else. It was in 1995 that he focused on singing and playing the guitar with his rock band. He has produced several CD recordings of his original music in his own studio, and has helped produce local bands and artists. He performs regularly in the Chicago area.

*** Lesson Details ***
Daniel exhibits patience and care with each student, and develops an individualized approach based on clear goals with practical procedures. Most beginners can expect to have a working knowledge of music notation and how it applies to their instrument within three months, and should be developing fluency in performing music that they enjoy within six months. Advancing students will enjoy the rewards that will follow by studying with an experienced teaching musician that will recognize strengths and weaknesses, and recommend proven techniques for personal musical development. Studying music should be fun, fulfilling, and in harmony with the needs and desires of the student, and this is key to the philosophy held by Daniel.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Eight track recording gear; grand piano; guitars/bass (acoustic & electric); cables/amps, drum kit and percussion.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide lesson materials, and always have a metronome with me. I expect the student to have an instrument. I prefer that a student has a music stand.

*** Specialties ***
Customized approach to the individual based on needs and goals.

Excellent teacher who is incredibly knowledgeable in all aspects of music. His use of the "pivot system" got me reading music in no time. As with all lessons, practice helps move things along, but even when "life" got in the way, Dan always made great use of our time. I will probably start up with him again once my schedule clears.

My 6 year old son, Zak has just started taking lessons with Jenny. She is fantastic. He looks forward to his weekly lessons and has amazed us how quickly he has progressed. Jenny is inspiring and is extremely patient and supportive. She has helped him build his confidence and rewards progress with stickers and gummy bears which really makes it fun while he is learning. She has a fantastic music library and uses age appropriate materials to inspire him. He absolutely loves going to her for lessons. I strongly recommend Jenny.

Jenny was both caring and determined when teaching my daughter the flute. My child has had some behavioral problems at school, but Jenny was patient and her lessons were engaging enough to keep her on track and learning.
Strongly recommend.

Corbin is friendly, professional, and very knowledgeable about both minute technical aspects of saxophone technique as well as general musicality. I was quite picky in trying to find a saxophone instructor as I already have a BA in Music and wanted someone to help hone my skills in preparation for graduate studies. And I'm happy to say that Corbin is a great teacher and really knows his stuff!

Best instructor! My son is 6 years old and is my very picky/difficult child. He looks so forward to Corbin coming and teaching him piano. Corbin is patient and knows when to reign my son in to pay attention and when to just let him experiment with music and have some freedom. I highly recommend him!
