My services provide you with an opportunity to learn from a balance state of thinking to achieve success in your goals for the chosen instrument. Whether its technique, learning how to read both musically and literally, my teaching methods are very self reflective and introspective to provide the understanding you're looking for. All in all my sessions are very people friendly and driven to meet your needs. This helps to learn on a deeper level so that you may appreciate, learn faster and enjoy a greater sense of awareness for the fun of the music making process. I have a very warm and easy going approach with an emphasis on FUN so that we can connect to what we love to do which is make music.

About James

My name is James and I have earned a Master’s degree in Music Performance and graduated from Cal State Fullerton. I also have a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education received from the University of Redlands. Currently I am Co-principal of the Corona Symphony Orchestra and play in other groups throughout Southern California as well as the Elementary level band instructor in the Monrovia Unified School district. I have also taught and coached at several middle
and high schools for the past few years, and I teach privately throughout the San Gabriel Valley and the Inland Empire. My passion is educating the musicians of tomorrow and helping them discover their innate musical abilities and desires.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are very student driven and revolve around developing students innate music abilities to help them connect and experience success as well as enriching their lives with music. In my lessons students will develop music appreciation skills by listening to music, understanding basic music theory concepts, growing a knowledge of historical awareness in music all alongside learning the instrument of their chosen preference. The pace set for the sessions is rather relaxed and is highly dependent on the student but, students are guided throughout the sessions to eventually achieve their goals. My main teaching approach is: Let me use my skills and knowledge to help figure out what works best for you!

James is very patient and we learn a song or two a week. We even learned three full songs last week! He can help you find the songs you like and excels at providing the instruction you're looking for while keeping a relaxed atmosphere. He explains how to read notes well and we just click with him.

As a beginning saxophone player, the first lesson was just the basics (how to put the instrument together, hold it, and get the correct mouth and lip and finger placement. I was even able to get a few good notes out! Really looking forward to the next lesson. Will definitely purchase longer lesson time in the future, as half hour went by to quickly.

About Yuh-Jiun

I am a music teacher and musician in the Los Angeles area. I was born in Taipei, Taiwan. I started my music education at the age of three; it started with clapping, rolling around on the floor, and Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade. I was fascinated by the magic that music possesses; as Rimsky-Korsakov unfold a tale of an enchanted land, with camel-riding merchants, bazaar, and princesses, without uttering a single word. I went on to learn a few instruments: xylophone, three different kinds of recorders, and then all this eventually led to flute.

I started studying flute at the age of 8, and
it has been a delightful journey. In high school, I have participated in marching band, symphonic band, wind ensemble, and symphonic orchestra. I was also part of two prestigious local youth orchestra, the Orange County Youth Symphony Orchestra, and the Claremont Young Musician Orchestra.

I obtained my Bachelor of Music (Flute Performance) degree from University of California, Santa Barbara. I grew immensely as a musician during my time in Santa Barbara, I studied under Jill Felber, and I was able to expand my repetoire and gain considerable experience. I even played at the local farmers market as a street performer during the weekends. After graduation , I traveled to my home country Taiwan to study another great musician - Anders Norell, the principal flutist/flautist of the Taiwan Philharmonic. It was another great opportunity as I was able to garner teaching experiences, as well as attending master classes of great flutist/flautist such as Emmanuel Pahud.

As a music teacher, I encourage and inspire. I am foremost a music lover, then flutist and flute teacher. I aspire to spread the abundance of joy and beauty that music has bring into my life. As the great conductor and cellist Pablo Casals puts it: "Music is the divine way to tell beautiful, poetic things to the heart". Therefore, whether if you are a wobbly toddler, high school marching band enthusiast (as I once was), house wife looking for a new hobby, full time employee who always had a love for classical music, or grandmother who is looking for something other than crochet, join me on this wonderful journey.

"The pursuit of music would provide you a life time of joy".

Michelle M.

Upland, CA

All ages and levels of students.

About Michelle

Classical performing and recording artist Michelle M. has openings for flute students of any level, from beginner to advanced. Michelle has performed worldwide as a soloist and chamber musician. As a teacher, she focuses on learning skills correctly from the beginning, with emphasis on good tone production and healthy body mechanics. She also works with high school students preparing college auditions, and has regular recital opportunities for all students.

"I love teaching private lessons. It's so much fun watching students grow musically and emotionally! My teaching style emphasizes l
earning CORRECTLY from the beginning, so that bad habits don't form, such as bad posture which can lead to pain down the road. I also pick music which the students know and enjoy, so that playing daily becomes a fun ritual for them.

"Learning musical skills such as theory, composition and improvisation are also part of my teaching style. These things strengthen a student's overall musical knowledge and enjoyment. I also highly recommend that students listen and watch flute performances, either recordings or live concerts.

"Of course, the best part is playing, and I encourage all students to perform as much as possible, whether in my student recitals or in outside concerts. I offer many opportunities for performance, and help prepare students for their own band or orchestra concerts as well."

Michelle is a fantastic teacher! My daughter was a beginner student, just starting at elementary school, and we wanted to supplement those lessons. Wow, what a difference it has made! Elaine shows improvement after every lesson and she just LOVES Michelle. She is patient and kind, and very motivational. She has a knack for reaching Elaine and bringing out the best in her. Thank you, Michelle!

As a former student, I couldn't feel luckier to have studied flute with Michelle for ~6 years (ages 10-16). During that time, she not only helped improve my technique and skill enormously, but also acted as a hugely supportive, warm and funny presence in my life. Michelle genuinely cared about my progress and very patiently guided me through years of instruction, offering constant encouragement. She always made sure I was thoroughly prepared for every recital, music competition, or youth orchestra that I participated in, and helped me pick music that I always enjoyed playing and practicing. She was also very thoughtful and hands-on in terms of helping me choose a new flute, a music camp, etc., which my parents and I greatly appreciated.

During my time with Michelle, I felt that my lessons were excellently paced—she knew when to push and challenge me, but also made sure I was comfortable with the material, and didn't rush me if something proved more difficult. Over the years, we progressed through theory, breathing techniques, scales, playing with an accompanist or another flutist, etc. in a way that felt very natural and appropriate. Additionally, the relationship we built became very important to me as a student. There were several times that, as an overextended middle- or high-schooler, I seriously thought about quitting flute—but the idea of stopping lessons with Michelle was sad enough to make me reconsider each time. I truly appreciated how much she cared about me both as a musician and as a person, and was thankful in the end to have kept playing with her as long as I did.

Michelle is easy-going and knowledgeable, kind and talented, understanding and wonderful. I will always be so grateful for the kind of instruction and encouragement I received from her—she helped me grow as a musician in every way. Thank you so much!!

My daughter (who is now in college) was a student of Michelle’s from 4th – 11th grade. Michelle is a talented musician, a wonderful person, and a very effective teacher. My daughter really enjoyed her lessons with Michelle - it was always a bright spot in her busy week. She benefited from Michelle’s guidance outside of lessons also – recitals, entering and placing in solo competitions, and auditioning and playing for the Los Angeles Youth Orchestra. We felt so lucky to have found Michelle – she was an excellent teacher and a wonderful role model - teacher, musician, mother. I recommend her very, very highly.

Brianne is an incredibly skilled and versatile musician. I was first convinced of her talent when I attended one of her performances. At that point I did not need reviews or anyone else to convince me she has a gift.

I highly recommend Brianne as an instructor. She has taught me a great deal about music theory and composition. Something she offers her students that I haven't found anywhere else is the ability to arrange or compose songs for their skill level. Sometimes learning out of the books isn't enough, and Bri takes her lessons to a much deeper level by providing the music students need to play in order to learn.

In addition to all that I have learned from her over the past year, Brianne has also assisted me in my personal business ventures by composing original music for videos and entertainment segments. If you're looking for someone with diverse talent, she's the one!

Regardless of what instrument you play, taking lessons from Brianne will make you a better musician. I highly recommend her.

Brianne is awesome. She has such a natural talent for music that she can't help but want to share it with others. She really understands music on a fundamental level and easily conveys that knowledge to her students. Over the years, I have worked with Brianne on the piano, flute, and voice, and she has amazed me every single time with her ability to share her talent and to see that same talent flourish and grow in other people. Music is her life and her excitement for it is contagious. I highly endorse her as a musician and as a teacher. You will not regret learning from Bri.

Bri is a stellar musician, with an uncanny ability to explain at the most basic level, from simple to advanced concepts musically. I have taught over 40+ years of piano, and she is by far the most exceptional student I have ever had. She is patient, kind, and clear. Her standards are high, but never unattainable. She teaches correct rhythm, note knowledge, theory, and dynamics, as well as musical interpretation, or musicianship. You will not only play or sing notes, but you will create MUSIC with her help. You won't be sorry if you take lessons from Bri.

Eric C.

Upland, CA

In lessons, I will teach students how to develop an embouchure and make sound, have proper technique, discuss equipment care, how to read music and develop note recognition, and ultimately, play music. The goal is to get my students playing with proper technique, so that this will carry on throughout their career and playing of the instrument. After getting some sounds out of the instrument and having decent technique, students will be assigned 1-2 songs to work on each lesson. It is the learning of music on one's own, that I believe, truly challenges the student to continue to apply information given in lessons.

About Eric

Hi! I'm Eric, a Saxophonist, Singer, Teacher, and Composer born and raised in Southern California. I've been playing the saxophone for over ten years now, singing for as long as I can remember, and have been living and breathing music since I was born. I play for various local gigs, and sometimes gigs in Los Angeles at venues such as the Baked Potato.

The three most rewarding experiences in my musical career, would be a successful performance, great feedback on a new composition, and watching the progress of my student's skill. I have taught students from elementary school all the way to t
hose that are older than me. I keep my lessons fun, efficient, and applicable. While we all hate homework, I give students assignments to work on, so they don't forget what I teach, and so they can expand upon the concepts given in lessons, familiarizing them with the information. I look forward to helping you unlock your potential!
