I believe fundementally that each student has a unique learning style and benefits from a tailored approach. I do not subscribe to a particular regimented program of study, rather I select the repertoire and etudes to match each student's needs. I believe in choosing both concert music and etudes to challenge individual deficits and work on skills that will apply broadly across the repertoire.
I have a background in both violin and viola and believe that many of the skills which are taught to young violinists are not addressed early enough with young violists. It is my goal to make sure that young violists develop strong technical facility that enables them to develop into mature musicians with ease.
About Joshua
I am a professional orchestral violist and recording artist based in Long Beach, California. For the past two seasons I have primarily served as the assistant principal violist of the Pacific Symphony, while enjoying a flourishing freelance career in California and abroad. I have been fortunate t

I am a professional violinist and violist in the Boston area. I am a graduate of the New England Conservatory where I have studied with Miriam Fried, Donald Weilerstein, and Martha Katz. I have performed extensively throughout my life as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player on both the violin and viola in a variety of professional ensembles including substitute viola work with the Borromeo String Quartet. I draw from this performing background to teach my students of all ages and abilities.
I currently act as Adjunct Instructor of Violin and Viola at Merrimack College, where I serve as a primary instrumental teacher to enrolled students. I have also acted as the primary violin teacher for Main Street Music, LLC, in Waltham. Additionally, I run a private studio of 5-10 students as young as 6 and as old as 60. Of these, some never touched an instrument before our first lesson, and some are serious conservatory-bound musicians intending to make a career as a performer.

I am a lifelong musician who loves teaching. I have been teaching for a decade, and have played in many orchestras and chamber groups. I practice radical empathy in all things, but especially with my students. I believe kindness helps us grow; fostering a positive environment and relationship with my students is important to me, because it is important for their development as musicians. I believe in a holistic approach to teaching an instrument, nurturing and working on body, mind, and soul—a healthy and happy musician is a good musician! I encourage students to fall in love with what they do, and to advance at their own pace. I believe there is no such thing as bad musicians, just learners who are cultivating their art.
