I teach beginner bluegrass fiddle using an approach designed to help students be able to learn both by ear and with sheet music, and to prepare to play with other musicians or attend bluegrass jams, as well as play with good technique and posture. I teach children age 6 and older, and adults, and welcome adult beginners. Students can choose to work from either the book Jack Tuttle's Bluegrass Fiddle Primer, or The American Fiddle Method Volume 1 by Brian Wicklund.

Orange Blossom, Mississippi Sawyer and Devil's Dream are a few of the basic fiddle songs I like to teach. The key to Fiddling is being able to play in tune and fast with a few basic rhythm patterns. I teach theory, scales, rhythm, pattern recognition, how to work with a metronome from slow to fast, proper bow grip and placement as well as proper posture for the violin.

My gifted son needs challenging and stimulating activities to help him balance all of his feelings. I was extremely hesitant with signing him up because he is only 4. However he instantly connected with Landon and said he has a fantastic time. I absolutely love how Landon has a gift to communicate music without watering down terminology but slowly speaking so that children can understand. He truly has a gift. We look forward to the next one.

I really enjoy taking saxophone lessons with Ana. She is extremely knowledgeable in topics related to saxophone, jazz, and improvisation. Her lessons are very organized, intellectually stimulating, and she provides just the right amount of structure while allowing me the space to develop my own creative ideas. I highly recommend taking a lesson with her. You’ll thank me later!

I have played clarinet for 5 years now and am working on music for solo pieces and band class. Ana gives me lots of material to work on and I am feeling more confident about my playing!
Amanda D.
I'm a classically-trained flutist and have been taking Jazz improv and theory lessons with Ana for four months. I have learned so much from her - she has opened my eyes to jazz and made it fun and approachable. The lessons have given me a deeper appreciation when listening to jazz, improved my listening skills, and made me a better player. I never thought I would be able to do improv, and after a few weeks of lessons it came very easily to me. I highly recommend Ana to anyone who wants to learn jazz improv, regardless of what instrument they play!

"Here are the pros: Cody is a very nice gentleman. He’s an experienced player and great teacher, very patient, respectful, with a good demeanor, and is easy to talk to about practical stuff so that I can play or jam with others more quickly. I study with him once a week for 75 minutes online from NJ. He answers my questions, helps me with technique, and then we work on a song that I want to learn such as our current song is Buck Owens country song Truck Driving Man —he’ll show me how he would improvise and do the back up— putting in classic authentic bluegrass/country sounding fiddle double stops, slides, hammer on licks. I am having a blast learning new stuff and feel I am quickly progressing — I am confident you’d enjoy his teachings too. But you don’t have to take my word for it, instead just listen to his playing on YouTube- it speaks for itself. I wanna play like him.

Here are the cons: even at 75 minutes a week the time just flies by too fast, I don’t want the fun to stop. I look forward to my lesson every week."

"I took violin lessons for a year with an instructor I found through a different organization (not TakeLessons)--and I learned more in one hour with Antoinette than I learned in 30 lessons with that other teacher. In just one lesson, I can see that Antoinette is friendly, smart, encouraging, knows her stuff--and knows how to teach (which not every good player can do). I'm an adult, but I bet she'd be just as great with a student of any age."

"Peter is very patient and exceptionally knowledgeable. He is very analytical in his teaching. I am a new student (only a few lessons) and I am confident he will be able to provide the critical but positive instruction and encouragement that I need. His enthusiasm and passion for music is contagious. In fact, he gives detailed oral histories and music theory explanations related to the topic of the lesson. Most teachers boot you out when time is up - not Peter - he always finishes on the right note. Plus he has an adorable cat assistant, Rory, as a side kick."

"I am so glad that I took lessons from Ashley! I had been playing for about a year and a half when I started my lessons in January of 2018. We had hour-long sessions once a week for about a year, but the time always felt too short! We usually learned about a song a week, sometimes more and sometimes less depending on how quickly I picked it up. Since I could already read sheet music, I mostly learned by ear, and Ashley did a wonderful job with slowing the songs down and helping me repeat them until I could play by memory. Now, I'm really glad I learned through ear training because it's an invaluable skill to have! I also really enjoyed playing harmony with her -- so cool. She always had songs hand-picked for me to learn, or, if there was a song that I really wanted to be able to play, she would help me with that one. Ashley is the best -- such a sweet, patient, and encouraging teacher! She even offered to have me play with her on stage! If you have the chance, take lessons from Ashley!!!"

"Concetta was such a treat to have in our home! She came out all the way from NY to NJ for my mothers birthday, and though she is a beginner, emerged from the 1 hour lesson so inspired to keep practicing, able to fully complete her first song! She even did a little performance at the end on the lesson! She is a great people person, fun to talk to, and she really knows her stuff. Excellent choice!"

"I saw a post on Facebook by Alani that she was giving fiddles lessons. It had been a while since I picked up the fiddle and thought that this was the best way to get back to playing. I messaged her and we set up a date and time for the lesson. The lesson was amazing, we were both a little nervous but it didn’t stop us from playing some awesome music. Alani was really patient with me as I hadn’t tuned or played my fiddle in a good while. After the lesson, Alani sent me audio files of the music we played so that I could listen back and continue learning. Overall a great lesson, and I hope to take another soon!!"

What's the Difference Between the Violin and Fiddle?

Is that a fiddle... or a violin? It's a common question, and one that baffles many beginner musicians. So what's the answer? When it comes to the actual instrument, there actually aren't any differences. What distinguishes a violin from a fiddle is what kind of music you're playing with it. A musician playing folk, bluegrass or country, for example, would most likely refer to their instrument as a fiddle; those who play other genres (jazz, classical, etc.) typically call theirs a violin. …
