I began my musical training at a young age and studied, performed and accompanied for many years. Following college (Seattle Pacific University - Music Education/Piano), I had specialized teacher training and certification to teach the Robert Pace Approach to piano (Columbia University). I recognize that each student is unique and has different goals and aspirations so each student's lesson is unique and carefully prepared to inspire and create curiosity to make reaching the goal easy, fun and exciting.

My goal is: To discover and encourage each student's musical potential; to nurture and inspire creativity, musical artistry and a love of music; and to develop a strong musical foundation that provides the tools, confidence and enthusiasm to independently learn, create and enjoy music for a lifetime.

My daughter has been performing vocal lessons with Mathew over the last 7 months and I must say both my daughter and I have thoroughly enjoyed our time with Mathew learning the finer details of singing. Mathew has great knowledge in all areas of music and has helped my daughter grow as a singer. He is patient, detailed and connects well with my child. I would also add that he has also been more than flexable with rescheduing lessons when needed, which has made our experience even more rewarding. (: Kids and their sport!

About Terry

I offer private guitar lessons tailored to your strengths, weaknesses and goals. Beginner to advanced if you want to improve your playing, I want to help.

I have been involved in music since early childhood, and started playing guitar in my teens. Today guitar is my primary instrument. I can help you play a variety of styles, including but not limited to, Rock of all types, Blues, Jazz, Classical, Fingerstyle, Chord Melody and New Age music. Both electric and acoustic guitar, as well as bass guitar lessons are offered. I have been giving private guitar lessons since 1988 and have performed
in numerous rock and blues bands since that time as well.

Currently my live performing act is solo instrumental acoustic guitar in a new age jazz style. Since I am a also a professional performing musician I am able to offer help, insights and assistance in many areas.

All Ages

I can help in the following styles:

Rock - All styles Progressive, Metal, and more
Blues
Jazz
Finger Style and Chord Melody

Specializing In:

Technique

The better your technique the more you will be able to do musically. Learn tricks and tips to help improve your technique and thus your playing.

Theory

Want to write your own songs, improvise your own solos or just understand what you are playing? Learn theory and increase your understanding of music. Knowledge of theory is a vital tool for musicians. Study basic to advanced principles.

Improvising

The art of creating a great solo or a cool improvised vamp is one that will dramatically increase your musicianship and knowledge of the fretboard. Learn basic licks and understand how and when to use them. Increase your awareness of rhythm, melody and harmony. Study chord scale relationships, develop lead techniques and apply them to your solos.

Sight Reading

Sight reading is an important skill that many players overlook. I strongly suggest my students to learn to read. If they choose not to then I won't push it. However it you want to be a serious musician then sight reading is a must. Over 20 years of private teaching has allowed me to develop a method of teaching the skill of reading music, that anyone can learn. It is easy, fun and covers a variety of styles. The program covers the entire fretboard, encourages creativity and helps with improvising.

Finger Style and Chord Melody

Finger style is one of the most rewarding styles to play and when combined with an acoustic guitar, it becomes a natural experience that helps one become closer to the instrument. Play finger picking accompaniments or study the elusive chord melody style. Learn basic finger picking patterns, simple classical techniques, move on to inversions to create smooth voice leading, add walking bass lines, drones, lead lines and counterpoint. Learn different ways of arranging tunes in different styles.

Private studio inside a music store equipped with two amps, a music stand, a few chairs, there is room for parents, however the studio is quite small

Terry cancelled our first lesson, then we rescheduled for the same time the following week. Although his schedule advertised an 8pm slot, he asked me to start at 7:30. I told him I couldn't get there until about 7:40, due to other plans.
The lesson itself was ok, but Terry ended it at precisely 7:29 and 40 seconds, and I was out the door at 7:30. A little annoying since I basically got stiffed for 10 minutes. While being ushered out, I tried to schedule our next lesson, but Terry told me he couldn't schedule anything for a few days and would call me. Today I got an email message that he's moved to the other side of town! I'm annoyed about the scheduling hassles and the lessons aren't worth it. I would like a refund.

I have been really impressed with Terry. Terry works great with my 13 year old son. He is patient and always acts interested in what my son is wanting to show him. Terry is also very good at making sure he includes songs in the lesson that my son likes. I am impressed with Terry's guitar playing - my son will play something random, and Terry can join right in. As a parent I am impressed with Terry's attention to detail. As my son plays, Terry will notice things like correct fingering, strum patterns, counting, etc. If something wasn't played correctly, Terry notices it and will make the correction in a positive way. I know that my son appreciates Terry's input also. I feel like Terry is teaching my son good habits and is doing a great job of bringing exercises to lesson that are a good foundation to learning....and he adds things as building blocks to that foundation. I asked my son his opinion and he said that Terry helps you work on good technique. And while you are learning with him, you get to pick some of the songs that you want to learn.

Excellent in both instruments and voice

I took voice lessons from Michael C. and he was very easy to work with. He always provided excellent feedback and knew my strengths and weaknesses and where to focus. He provided each week a lesson with detailed tasks and wanted to keep me on track. He didn't waste any time and was prompt and professional in all dealings. I highly recommend him.

This Berklee grad knows his stuff!

I had already been playing guitar for about 10 years or so by the time I started taking lessons with Michael (so definitely not a beginner), and although my playing techniques were already pretty decent, I knew my knowledge of music theory paled in comparison and needed some work. Michael was able to easily assess where I was at and start me on a path of further music enlightenment. Before the end of my first lesson, it became clear just how much I had to learn and that Michael's musical prowess went beyond what he was teaching me.

Rather than just giving me pre-made handouts, Michael would have blank manuscript paper with which he would walk me through the theory as he was writing it out. This was extremely helpful in understanding the lesson. Michael can be flexible with his lesson plans, so if there's something specific you want to get into, he will teach if he feels you're ready.

Michael’s extensive knowledge of music theory was a big help in developing me more as a songwriter and composer. Even if you’re already an advanced player, I would definitely recommend this teacher if you are looking to broaden your musical literacy.
