Bonita L.

Bronx, NY

About Bonita

I teach at the Third Street Music School Settlement in Manhattan and I have taught recorder ensembles for Classroom Recorder Arts throughout New York City. I perform with the Celtic and Early Music Trio, Gryphon & Co., with the Putnam Chorale Orchestra, the American Chamber Opera Co., and other groups in the NYC area.

Born in Cleveland, I received a Bachelor of Music degree from Kent State University in Ohio before coming to New York City for studies with Thomas Nyfenger and Carol Wincenc. In 1987 I received a masters degree in flute performance from the Zurich Conservatory of Music, in Swi
tzerland, having started my studies there on a Rotary Foundation Grant.  I have also won a BRIO Award for excellence in the arts from the Bronx Council on the Arts.

*** Lesson Details ***
My specialty is flute. I also play and teach recorder, and I play various flute-like folk instruments with my group, Gryphon & Co. and in traditional Irish music settings. I have many years of experience teaching flute in a wide variety of circumstances: private lessons, small groups, classes and chamber music, children and adults. I have even taught in a foreign language, German, while I lived in Switzerland. For young beginners I bring new ideas to tried and true teaching methods through training in the Suzuki Method. For students of all ages, I use what I have learned studying the Alexander Technique, which helps to avoid or to relieve muscle tension and improve breathing.

*** Studio Equipment ***
There is a piano, music stand, tuner and metronome in my living room studio. I would expect the student to bring his or her own instrument, and a methods book and eventually a book of solos that I recommend. Sometimes I will have individual sheets of music available.Parking in my neighborhood is not a problem.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I sometimes bring and/or scan and email individual sheets of music for a student. I would expect the student to have his or her own instrument and a music stand, and to buy a methods book and eventually a book of solos that I recommend.

*** Specialties ***
Classical, Irish Traditional, Early Music and Folk, also Soprano and Alto Recorder.

Bonnie is a wonderful flute Teacher!

Bonnie has been teaching daughters, who are 8 and 10, for almost a year. She teaches them with warmth, patience and enthusiasm, and understands their respective levels. My girls have progressed beautifully, and Bonnie has even integrated lovely flute duets into the lessons which the girls can practice and perform together. We are extremely pleased with our lesson experience.
Thank you, Bonnie!

Bonnie is a wonderful and patient teacher

I started playing the flute when I was eleven, and I can’t imagine my past seven years without weekly lessons with Bonita Lubinsky at Third Street Music School. Music has always played a big role in my life, and Bonnie was the person who helped shape that general passion into a specific love for the flute and showed me how to become a thoughtful, dedicated musician. Her unlimited reserves of patience allowed her to work wonderfully well with all age groups, from her younger students just starting to play to me, a high school student with a few years of experience. Bonnie is incredibly kind and compassionate, and knows just how to drill a skill without it feeling like a chore. Because of her tutelage, I have made the decision to pursue the flute in college, and I am thankful for her abilities and for what she passed on to me every time I practice.

Erin is one of the kindest and most engaging musicians I've ever had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know. She has a natural way with children which puts them at ease. She's thoughtful and completely professional. Her years of experience playing and her demeanor make her the perfect French Horn teacher. My son had the passion to learn to play and she tapped into his enthusiasm and matched it with her energy and appreciation of a student who is eager to learn! I can't say enough about Erin accept that she is uniquely talented and the perfect music teacher.

Professional & Patient Vocal Coach!

I have been working with Ms.Genie for the past few months and I must say I have grown and learned so much in this short time. I am not as trained or accomplished vocally as her other students so I most especially appreciate her encouraging, yet firm approach to my training. I like being driven to go further and dig deeper.

I have so far to go but my willingness to learn, coupled with her willingness to teach; will surely help me to attain my goals as a singer.

Whether you need someone to help you polish your already well trained vocals or need someone to help foster the glimmer of talent you have, Ms. Genie is the instructor for you!

Dr. Regina is an inspiration! I began studying with her in Georgia at Shorter College and eventually transferred to Minnesota to finish my undergraduate degree with her. She is truly passionate about music, and the energy creates an incredible atmosphere for learning! She challenged me as a singer and performer and helped me learn to breathe life into the music--while also transforming my voice. She is a wonderful teacher and I would highly recommend her to anyone. Even a Skype lesson if you can't make it to her in NY. They are quiet helpful! I only wish I lived in the NY area so I could take from her in person. She is wonderful and I hope to continue studying with her for years to come.

I have been studying Voice (mostly emphasized on Broadway Singing) with Regina for a few months now and I am loving the lessons! She has really helped me identify the strong parts of my voice and showcase them while also strengthening those that are not as strong. What sets Regina apart from other teachers I've had in the past is that she does a really excellent job catering to each student's individual needs instead of having a set teaching structure that you have to try to fit yourself into. I also especially like that she will take the time to talk through the technique in a way that makes total sense and even if it doesn't at first, she'll always find a way to explain it differently until you really grasp the concept. Regina is an amazing teacher and I would recommend her to anyone who wants to push their voice to the next level!

First I must say Debra is truly amazing. Debra has been working with my daughter for almost two years. We started the lessons simply to improve my daughters grade in her music class at school. Which went from a C- to an A+. My daughter is very focused in music class and has had two solos in her school concerts, not to mention she has performed in two recitals with Debra as well. I am so pleased that we made the decision to do the privates, because my daughter has improved tremendously.

Debra, is kind, patience, as well as passionate about her art. Debra is very flexible with her schedule as well and that means a lot to me.

Debra thank you for sharing your talent.
