Amy C.

Weehawken, NJ

I am a professional actress/ singer/ songwriter and directer. I employ my many years of experience as a performing artist, to help my students develop what is unique and compelling with in them. I believe that everyone has something of value to express. The key is finding creative ways to unleash it.

About Amy

I have been a voice, acting, and teacher of creative arts for over 25 years. My background includes ten years of classical training with Maestro Julio Berrocal, as well as vocal training through the Feldekrais approach with Marcy Lindhiemer. In acting I have studied with renowned Stanislavsky scholar Sonia Moore and Master acting teacher of the Strasberg Method, Marcia Haufrecht. I received a B.A. For comparative literature and creative writing at the State University of New York at Purchase and I am currently studying for a masters in social work at Walden University.
I believe, within al
l of us, Is the ability to express something distinctive and original. I work to help the student discover their individual and unique voice, weather it be through singing, acting or writing. I share with my students tools to gain the ability and confidence to achieve their goals. I empathize deeply with the challenges students may face when pursuing a life in the creative and performing arts, having worked professionally in those arena's for most of my adult life. I believe, it is the teachers job to respect each students individual process of learning.
My students have gone on to become recording artists, Broadway performers, movie actors, blues and cabaret artists and published writers.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am an empathetic teacher, sensitive to the students individual process of learning. My singing lessons usually start with breathing and relaxation exercises. Vocal exercise come next, then when the student is fully warmed up, we will begin to work on songs. It is important that the student be part of the process of picking material since the more they personally respond to the material the more apt they are to be engaged in their lessons and the more quickly they will learn. After three to six months they will understand the fundamentals of breathing and relaxation and its importance to proper vocal training. They will have begun the process of extending their range and will understand the principles of performance in song.
As an acting teacher and coach, I tailor my classes to the needs of each student. I utilize improvisatory and sensory techniques to help unleash spontaneity. I also encourage the students to use their personal experiences as a way to access a full range of emotions. I enjoy working with the student on script analysis, so as to discover the underlying motivations of the character the student is working on.
Creative and Lyric Writing
I use prompts as a way to get the student writing. Often, I will ask the student to write for stretches of time without editing themselves. It is important to unleash imagination before beginning the process of editing. Many times it is the unexpected that is the must compelling.

*** Studio Equipment ***
home- 10 minutes away from Manhattan with piano, seating for parents
-practice studio seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide a piano, cd/mp3 player and an large library of songbooks to work from. The student should bring sheet music of songs they want to work on and a recording device.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching how to sing rock, pop, musical theater, jazz, and blues without hurting the voice as well as method acting instruction.

I am running for a political office for the first time and Merideth is helping me in clarifying the message and my speaking skills.

Some instructors pressure you to take lessons with daily calls and emails. Merideth is very low key.

Merideth is excellent at quickly identifying student needs and adjusting the scope of the lesson to satisfy the need. She is very easy to work with and open to suggestions.

I feel my confidence growing exponentially with each lesson.

I started taking public speaking classes with Merideth about a month ago. I wanted to improve my skills as a story teller and make my communication more effective and intteractive. I am very impressed how Merideth approaches my situation and works with topics for my industry. I already find myself thinking about proper structure when I tell a story/ piece of news and find it very helpful to work with Merideth to form new habbits of storytelling. I highly reccomend Merideth!

Thank you Joe, for having such a HUGE role in my 7 year old daughter's winning 1st place for her two person scene 2 years in a row and for adding 1st place for her commercial and for her placing for best monologue to the list of successes. I see your instruction all over her phenomenal job and it is no wonder the casting director that judged her 2 person scene immediately impromptu auditioned her for a lead role in a movie! YOU ROCK JOE! You take acting and your instruction so seriously! AMAZED and THANKFUL that you're her coach!!
