Suzette R.

Monsey, NY

Private lessons in home. Lessons tailored to student's interests and abilities.

About Suzette

I started taking piano lessons when I was 4 and then learned the clarinet and played in the band in middle school. In high school I started playing the viola in the orchestra while still playing in the band. I had the best of all music worlds! In college I played in many school and community orchestras in places like Carnegie Recital Hall and even with the NY Philharmonic Orchestra! Orchestral and Chamber Music are my forte. I have been a string orchestra conductor for 10 years and love to put on a show to be remembered. My students have played at various day cares, nursing homes and sho
pping malls. We were even on the local Channel 12 News!

A good foundation and a thorough knowledge of the basics will help you get the most out of your instrument. We work on this becoming 2nd nature and natural. Then we analyze whats going on in the music, a bit of music theory is covered. Then we concentrate on what we hear and what our audience will hear versus what we want them to hear and how do we make this always a little better. We go as fast or as slow as your individual learning needs to be. Of course the more you dedicate to preparing on your own with regular practice between lessons, the greater progress you will achieve.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I give private 1 on 1 lessons in the student's home. Students are expected to have their instrument, music, a pencil, and a notebook for keeping a practice log and for written coaching notes. A music stand is helpful. I bring a smile, lots of patience and a fun time learning!

Excellent Teacher

Mrs. Rivera gave my son private cello lessons every Saturday morning for several months. She always arrived on time and was always full of energy. Mrs. Rivera made sure that he understood the material and gave him several helpful tips. He did very well in his music classes. Her energy is contagious. My daughter would attend my sons lessons and it peaked her interest to the point where she is now playing the violin. Mrs. Rivera is a great teacher, she is patient, punctual and personable. You won't be disappointed.

Gio A.

New York, NY

I've played guitar since I was only eight years old (over 20 years!) in many different bands, styles, and genres. I studied music and classical guitar at University of Central Florida, and during that time I also helped teach violin to a class of third graders. I'm not a pro violinist, but I have plenty of experience working with novice players, helping them develop proper technique, sight reading, ear training, and other skills needed to advance to their next level.

About Gio

I studied music at UCF (Orlando), focusing on classical and jazz guitar, but I also have years of experience playing rock, blues, folk, hip-hop, and musical theater on both guitar and drums.

I have been teaching guitar, drums, and piano for about eight years to students of all ages. Music is what I'm passionate about and it's what I enjoy. I want to inspire that same passion into the hearts and minds of others.

I am a laid-back teacher, fun, and I focus on the needs, abilities, and ambitions of the student. In turn, students must realize that learning an instrume
nt takes a lot of work and dedication. One can't expect to learn very much if s/he only practices or thinks about the instrument during the lesson. If the student is willing to put some time into practicing, then I will help them go far!

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have several guitars, a drum kit, djembe, mandolin, clarinet and full-size keyboard.

*** Specialties ***
Guitar: Classical, jazz, American or Irish folk, rock and pop; lead or rhythm.
Drums & Percussion: All genres
Piano: Classical (includes sight reading)

Methods and Materials Used:

Most of my beginner students are children from grade 3 to 8 who play violin or viola, and I usually begin by building their physical fundamentals (how to hold the instrument and the bow, how to stand, etc.). I find that having visual imagery can be helpful to the students, for example, asking the student's fingers to form a tunnel on the fingerboard to prevent their fingers from collapsing. After that, I teach a scale and write down a well-known tune (Twinkle Twinkle or Mary Had a Little Lamb) that corresponds the notes to that scale. My goal for these students is for them to be able to play any tune on the page comfortably by themselves. For my more advanced students, I concentrate on more technical aspects of playing, namely intonation, rhythm, and posture by using exercises from Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, Samuel Applebaum's String Builder, and the Suzuki books. I also begin to introduce musical aspects of playing, namely phrasing, dynamics, and articulation. For my advanced students, I introduce them to an early classical work or Baroque work, and supplement exercises that aid in the learning the piece. I also coach professional players who are looking to apply for music schools, competitions, and auditions.

Lesson Style:
I strongly believe having a fun and interactive lesson with a student is the key to learning music. I am a very patient and open-minded educator because I understand that it can be a daunting task to learn something if the student doesn't enjoy it. For example, some of my older beginner students feel silly when I ask them to learn Twinkle Twinkle, so I ask them for their favorite song, and I transcribe the tune for them to practice. For some students, motivation comes from having a perceivable goal, in which I encourage the students to apply for auditions, such as N.Y.S.S.M.A. Let me know what your needs are, and I am happy to accommodate my style of teaching depending on your personality and progress. I am here not just to teach, but also to inspire and have fun with music with you.

*** Specialties ***
Beginner, intermediate, and advanced students for violin / viola / piano from young children to adults.

She is extremely professional and patient with the learning process, but also very encouraging. She focuses on actually playing rather than being picky about unimportant details. I also like that she gives some history into the instrument and music.

Concetta has a lot of excellent suggestions for improving singing performance. The typed notes she sends after each lesson were a tremendous asset as well. In only five lessons, she improved my daughters stage presence and taught her how to engage an audience. We were always short term clients, but Concetta more than met our goals and expectations. I would very much recommend her for any level of voice and performance. Excellent teacher

Playing the violin is easy, once you realize that it is a kind of singing! Although it has perhaps the most complicated technique of any instrument, it is simple once you understand the focus of the technique.

About Stephen

I have been playing music on the violin since the age of 7, composing since I was 14, and playing and performing on the guitar since I was 18. I've written a lot of music, and this past spring had works performed in Virginia and two in Manhattan.

I have taught music for over 15 years, in colleges, music schools and privately. One thing that I have noticed is that, with more experience, I have a lot more fun--and so do my students.
