Anne M.

Montclair, CA

Having spent my lifetime on the stage singing and performing, I am a big advocate for singing as a fun and informative activity! Students will learn the basics of good breathing, tone production, and projection. I teach all styles of music in a healthy way!

About Anne

I am a professional, caring, and knowledgeable teacher. I believe that every student is an individual and I approach each lesson with that individual in mind. I have experience with all ages and am educated in many different teaching methods and styles. I am a confident believer that any person can succeed in music and enjoy music at some level.

I began taking piano lessons when I was six years old and I was hooked. I took lessons for 9 years and then resumed again when I was in college. In fourth grade I picked up the flute and the saxophone because I wanted to play in the
school Jazz Band. I then took Alto Saxophone and Flute lessons for 8 years all the way through high school. It wasn't until high school that I caught the singing bug when I joined the women’s choir as a sophomore. I quickly caught on and became a member of the concert choir and then the chamber group. We toured to Greece my Junior year singing in churches and even as entertainment on a cruise through the Greek Islands!

I hold a bachelor of music education from Chapman University in Orange, CA. I sang in the world renown University Choir and the smaller University singers chamber choir under the direction of choral music legend Dr. William Hall. I was awarded the annual director chosen choir award at the end of my senior year and was selected by my peers as Vice President of the choir during my senior year. During my time at Chapman we toured to the Miami, Colorado, the Pacific Northwest, and Italy, where we sang in St. Marks Cathedral in Venice, the Vatican, and the Sistine Chapel.

I received my Master's Degree in Musicology in 2013 and am currently working on finishing my PhD program at Claremont Graduate University in Musicology. I an active choir participant and vocalist in the area and am the current Musical Director at St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church in Los Angeles. Music has always been my passion, and I love helping others to experience music in the same way that I have.

*** Lesson Details ***
Students can expect a fun, exciting, and educational learning environment with me. I am classically trained but have experience teaching jazz, pop, musical theater, and classical repertoire. My students learn the basics in a fun, positive environment geared towards their individual needs.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can bring some music, the student should have their own instrument after they decide to take lessons permanently.

*** Specialties ***
I am a classically trained musician so I really specialize in that, although I do have experience teaching pop and jazz as well.

A Perfect Match

Committed, kind, intuitive, highly skilled singer and instructor. Anne is perfect for my daughter, Natalie. Anne has time and again gone way beyond what is required in a voice teacher, and has shown ingenuity and patience where needed (most of the time). I would recommend Anne as voice coach for any young aspiring singer. She will inspire, patiently work through any difficulties, and never ever use negative criticism, but always positive suggestions. An amazing and talented young woman.

I've been coaching singers for a little over 5 years and my students have gone on to perform solos at their community events. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to breathe and phrase properly and as time goes on you'll be able to vibrato and mix. I specialize in pop music but I could do almost everything. For a reference guide, I typically use The Singing Book by Dayme & Vaughn, Singing for the stars by Seth Riggs, and have the following tools for your lessons: a CD recorder and a Casio electronic keyboard. Each lesson will be recorded onto a cd so you don't have to take notes. If you don't understand something then, you'll might understand some key concepts later on your vocal journey. I love working with students for all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you.

About Varin

Songwriter / Producer
Instruments: Piano, Vocals, Guitar/Bass, Drums
DAWS: Reason, FL, Waves, & Pro Tools
Member of BMI, ASCAP, and SESAC (2011-Present)

If you would like to schedule an appointment at a different time, please ask and I will do my best to make that arrangement.

What's inside the singing lesson?

Lessons revolve around three basic aspects which are training, singing, and acting.

In training, definitely be ready for some scale exercises. If you want to work on making your vibrato faster, breathe better, sing more loud or soft, sing short or longer phrases, co
ntrolling your mix, executing your melismas, r&b licks, blue notes, bending notes, singing super high notes and transitioning down to lower notes: balancing head and chest voice, and expanding your range, then vocal training is what you'll need. Most of this activity involves matching sounds to custom scales played on a piano.

In singing, definitely have a song in mind you want to work on. Then we'll discuss which techniques and skills that are essential for that particular genre of music. Other than that, you'll learn singer's diction and will know how to control vowel sounds and consonants more efficiently. Most of this activity involves you singing either a line, a verse, chorus, bridge, or the entire song. It really depends on what level you feel comfortable at. Most of this activity revolves around breathing techniques, phrasing techniques, and you singing the melody correctly on pitch.

In acting, whether you're recording or performing, you'll still need to put an act together. Portrayal of emotions are quite the essential skills to make your sound believable. If singing with feeling is not working out for you, then you might want to consider working on some basic acting skills. Some of the skills covered are voice inflections, rhythm, gestures, body language, and facial expressions. Most of this activity involves you expressing yourself as an artist.

How to be prepared for the lesson?

If you do not have a piano or recording device on hand, I'll provide both devices for you. It's recommended to provide a piano. It doesn't have to be expensive, it just has to be in tuned. If it's digital, you should be fine. It's also recommended to have a recording device. Many clients enjoy recording their lessons on their mp3 players or any other computer devices. Please have a clean and clear space with an electrical outlet for the piano and recording device. Other than that, please wear comfortable clothing as if you are about to play a sport or an activity you enjoy. If you want to dress like a super star that's fine too.

If you're taking lessons online, don't worry about anything because everything will be provided.

Varin is nice. My mom hired him so I could sing solos at my church. I go to Jurupa Hills High and I run track. On my spare time, I sing and play piano. Singing has always been a passion of mine. Learning with Varin is always fun! He's not mean or strict with my voice. He is good. You should try him.

Hey all, I met through a friend of a friend. He's definitely a lot cheaper here = /

Any ways, I think he's worth every penny hehe

I'm an actress and I was really weak in the singing department until a close friend of mine referred his singing coach.

I am pursuing my dream in New York right now. I don't think I would be able to compete out here without Varin. XOXOXOXOXOO

My name is Jennifer. I am 35. I am a beginner with music although I have taken choir from 7th through 12th grade in high school and participated in church choir until the last ten years. I have always dreamed of singing. I have been told I am tone deaf for years which caused me to give up my desire for quite some time. I started with Amy just a few weeks ago. I have seen a remarkable improvement. I am still struggling but have learned far more from her in just less than a month than I have learned with in my 6 years of choir. This says a lot due to the fact at one time I ate slept and breathed music. I just never could understand the mechanics and anatomy. I recently did the piece that I am working on with Mrs Amy to one of the few I confided in about my lessons and they were amazed at the difference (this would be one of the ones who said music is just not for me). I am blessed to have her as a vocal coach and would recommend her to anyone. I am not where I want to be yet but I am so blessed that I am not where I was. Thank you Amy!

She knows what she is talking about, she is helping me with having a more clear sound and my diction. She explained to me some anatomy which I think was really helpful in able to have a better sound. I am excited to keep working with Amy and learning more about singing. She is also helping me with auditions, choosing the right song. This was just our first lesson, I can't wait to see the progress I am about to make and the new things I will be learning with her.

Lessons will consist primarily of building vocal technique. This will include exercises the student will need to practice, as it will improve their singing. Areas primarily addressed will include: breath support, developing of a tone, intonation, as well as learning songs too.

About Eric

Hi! I'm Eric, a Saxophonist, Singer, Teacher, and Composer born and raised in Southern California. I've been playing the saxophone for over ten years now, singing for as long as I can remember, and have been living and breathing music since I was born. I play for various local gigs, and sometimes gigs in Los Angeles at venues such as the Baked Potato.

The three most rewarding experiences in my musical career, would be a successful performance, great feedback on a new composition, and watching the progress of my student's skill. I have taught students from elementary school all the way to t
hose that are older than me. I keep my lessons fun, efficient, and applicable. While we all hate homework, I give students assignments to work on, so they don't forget what I teach, and so they can expand upon the concepts given in lessons, familiarizing them with the information. I look forward to helping you unlock your potential!

Patrick is a great teacher who really knows what he is talking about! I don't even feel embarrassed to sing (horribly) in front of him. His warm ups are very helpful and the way he explains everything is completely clear. If I don't understand something, he has no problem repeating himself or trying to explain it in a different way. I've learned a lot from his lessons, and he's a really fun person to be around. I think everyone should pick him as a teacher!
