Vanessa L.

Hacienda Heights, CA

I can teach you to sing many styles, all with using proper vocal technique.

About Vanessa

As a vocal teacher I focus on the correct method to singing that helps keep your voice beautiful and healthy.
I earned my bachelors degree in music education with an emphasis in vocals. I learned music appreciation, theory, history, choral singing and classical voice training.
I love music and cannot picture life without it. Music is an expression of life! I also love to teach music to others as I feel I'm passing on a great gift.

*** Lesson Details ***
As a teacher I fall somewhere in between strict and laid back. For instance, if you don't practice I won't scold you, but I will
remind you that you can only be as good as you work to be. If you don't want to put in the effort you will waste your time and money, as well as not receive the results that you were desiring.
Our lessons will consist of many vocal exercises, good posture, and breathing techniques. One rule that I have is that I don't move you on to another song until you have successfully learned all you can from the first one you try. There is no point in learning another song when you have only learned the first one at a mediocre level.
If you are serious about becoming a better singer/musician you will enjoy our lessons.
I encourage my students to strive for excellence and will do all I can to draw that out of you.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide the tools to learn theory, songs to choose from and I do have my own portable keyboard. Students would need to have a tape or digital recorder to record their lessons and a positive attitude.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical voice, and vocal training, (learning how to use your voice properly).

Vanessa is very strong on technique and is very flexible and encouraging. My daughter is slowly moving into a more confident singing place thanks to her. If my daughter were ever to have more lessons we'd return to her without hesitation. From my daughter :"she's kind, fun and a good instructor". Thank you,Vanessa!

Mark H.

La Habra, CA

As mentioned above, I take each student as an unique individual that must embrace not only the technical skills required, but the passion, confidence and professionalism that will help them succeed.

About Mark

Classically trained with years of performance and practical experience. I know how to help you make the music that you want to make. I am well-versed in nearly all music styles from classical to contemporary/pop. I am currently active in both piano accompaniment, vocal performance with the Pacific Chorale,
directing a very active north orange county community choir, and directing the choirs and drama department at Tuffree Middle School in Placentia with approximately 150 students in the program.

I recently completed my music credential and have graduate degrees in Education and Music.

I am especially gifted in teaching beginning piano, fundamental vocal production and dramatic presentation. I have extensive experience with the young and beginning acting student and can masterfully explain the dynamics of auditions and performing in the community.

*** Lesson Details ***
I focus on the individual student for curriculum and speed of progress. I utilize Bastien and other music curricula depending on maturity and ability. Within 3 months most students are performing simple songs successfully and within 6 months they have begun to master the more difficult 2nd and 3rd level. I believe in creating opportunities for the student to play in public and successfully perform by playing in small groups and bands. My acting students are taught through monologues and basic acting dynamics along with rehearsing through audition challenges and opportunities in the community.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Separate music room, grand piano, multiple keyboards available.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Professional piano keyboard and sound systems available.

*** Specialties ***
Piano - Foundations, jazz piano, Broadway, easy listening.
Voice - Foundations, breathing, operatic styling, Broadway.

My son enjoys his time stretching his voice out. While my son's voice hasn't dramatically improved over just a few lessons, his confidence has improved which is most important.

This product is very handy to use.

Mark is very professional and sings well himself. In just a few lessons he's had a powerful impact on my singing because of the techniques he's demonstrated.

A Gem

Alex has been a joy for my daughter to work with. He has been working with her a little over a year. She has grown in her music but most of all in the life lessons he has taught her along the way. Alex on a weekly basis connect his music lessons to life lessons for Whitney. It's amazing to listen to her play each week as she develops in her music and a joy to watch her maturity in managing life's challenges. He has been a great source of support for her. We love you Alex!!! Your the best.

I will definitely recommend Alex...

Alex is awesome, my only concern was that he came not clearing his schedule accurately with his office and he was stressed out fixing his teaching schedule during my kid's time slot. I do understand that its our first time and looks like office made the mistakes. But, it could have handled in a better way like way before or after.

Varin I.

Chino Hills, CA

I've been coaching singers for a little over 5 years and my students have gone on to perform solos at their community events. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to breathe and phrase properly and as time goes on you'll be able to vibrato and mix. I specialize in pop music but I could do almost everything. For a reference guide, I typically use The Singing Book by Dayme & Vaughn, Singing for the stars by Seth Riggs, and have the following tools for your lessons: a CD recorder and a Casio electronic keyboard. Each lesson will be recorded onto a cd so you don't have to take notes. If you don't understand something then, you'll might understand some key concepts later on your vocal journey. I love working with students for all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you.

About Varin

Songwriter / Producer
Instruments: Piano, Vocals, Guitar/Bass, Drums
DAWS: Reason, FL, Waves, & Pro Tools
Member of BMI, ASCAP, and SESAC (2011-Present)

If you would like to schedule an appointment at a different time, please ask and I will do my best to make that arrangement.

What's inside the singing lesson?

Lessons revolve around three basic aspects which are training, singing, and acting.

In training, definitely be ready for some scale exercises. If you want to work on making your vibrato faster, breathe better, sing more loud or soft, sing short or longer phrases, co
ntrolling your mix, executing your melismas, r&b licks, blue notes, bending notes, singing super high notes and transitioning down to lower notes: balancing head and chest voice, and expanding your range, then vocal training is what you'll need. Most of this activity involves matching sounds to custom scales played on a piano.

In singing, definitely have a song in mind you want to work on. Then we'll discuss which techniques and skills that are essential for that particular genre of music. Other than that, you'll learn singer's diction and will know how to control vowel sounds and consonants more efficiently. Most of this activity involves you singing either a line, a verse, chorus, bridge, or the entire song. It really depends on what level you feel comfortable at. Most of this activity revolves around breathing techniques, phrasing techniques, and you singing the melody correctly on pitch.

In acting, whether you're recording or performing, you'll still need to put an act together. Portrayal of emotions are quite the essential skills to make your sound believable. If singing with feeling is not working out for you, then you might want to consider working on some basic acting skills. Some of the skills covered are voice inflections, rhythm, gestures, body language, and facial expressions. Most of this activity involves you expressing yourself as an artist.

How to be prepared for the lesson?

If you do not have a piano or recording device on hand, I'll provide both devices for you. It's recommended to provide a piano. It doesn't have to be expensive, it just has to be in tuned. If it's digital, you should be fine. It's also recommended to have a recording device. Many clients enjoy recording their lessons on their mp3 players or any other computer devices. Please have a clean and clear space with an electrical outlet for the piano and recording device. Other than that, please wear comfortable clothing as if you are about to play a sport or an activity you enjoy. If you want to dress like a super star that's fine too.

I have been trying to come up with the perfect words to describe this teacher but I can't find anything I feel is good enough, other than the words wonderful and amazing. The way she teaches, and just her presence alone just blows me away, and I couldn't be more thankful to have met her and have the opportunity of her teaching me. If anyone is meant to be a teacher,it would be this person. She is so gifted.. Believe me when I say, if you have any doubt about choosing the right teacher, look no further because you just found her.

Amy has truly changed my life both as a performer and person. She helped me polish my vocal technique and singing methods, in addition to acting and audition coaching. She was very instrumental in helping me pick amazing audition songs and how to really give a memorable performance, even if it's just 16 bars at an open call! Before studying with Amy, I was a bit unfocused and rusty, now I am poised and confident in my singing abilities. Thank you Amy, you are an incredible and inspiring teacher!

Strategies for Sight Singing

It may seem like instrumentalists have it much easier when it comes to sight reading music; by simply pressing a key or a string, the notes are immediately available to them without any additional thought, and all that’s left to them is to work out duration, dynamics, and tempo.
