Mitchel B.

Toledo, OH

Students of all levels will learn technique, reading and ear training, and musicality through the practice and performance of the student's goal music. Students will be provided with supplemental exercises and assignments necessary to advance their performance skills.

About Mitchel

Hello Students and Parents,

I have been playing several instruments since I was very young, and am excited to share my passion for music with you! I have recently graduated from the Michigan State University College of Music, currently teach music at several public schools, and play in local ensembles.

I have been very fortunate to tour the United States as a drummer with multiple ensembles including The Pioneer Drum and Bugle Corps, the Michigan State University Percussion Studio, and the Plymouth Canton Educational Park Drumline.

I love all genres of music. Sometimes I feel that I h
ave no choice but to blast my favorite hip-hop or electronic tunes while on the go. Other days, I immerse myself in the exploration of technique and emotion while perfecting some of Beethoven's late piano compositions.

I spend much of my personal time on artistic ventures such as practicing, performing, drawing, playing poi, and going to concerts. The truth is, music is such a diverse art form that the inspirations and opportunities are endless.

Thanks for checking out my page! I hope that we can start making music together soon.

*** Lesson Details ***
We'll take our first lesson easy with a discussion of your musical goals. I'll want to know things about you such as:
Why are you interested in music lessons?
What music do you like to listen to and what music do you want to play?
Do you have any past experience? Or is this a fresh start?
Do you know of any strengths and weaknesses?

After this, we will begin a regiment that is as personalized as possible. My goal is for you to reach your goals while having fun and working hard. My teachers have always told me that you will take from your lessons what you put into your lessons. I am just as happy teaching the laid back hobby musician, as I am coaching the next Mozart who practices nonstop.

My teaching style comes from a variety of influences. I used to be the student of Drum Corps instructors who had the highest standards for commitment and discipline. Now, I myself work with many special needs students who are exploring art as an emotional outlet, rather than a way of getting a trophy. All in all, I will always do my best to insure that you are on the right path towards reaching your goals.

Zbigniew R.

Ann Arbor, MI

About Zbigniew

My greatest desire is that I will instill in each of my students the love I have for making music.
I am a classically-trained violinist. I grew up in Lodz, Poland, where I began musical education at the age of 7.
I studied violin and piano at the Music High School and Music Academy of K.&G. Bacewicz, Lodz, Poland and earned a Master Degree in violin performance in 1980.
During his College years I started to perform with the Symphony Orchestra of Polish Radio and Television.
From the mid – 70s until the early 1990s, I performed with several Polish orchestras
and held a position as a v
iolin teacher for four years at the College of Education
in Slupsk, Poland.
Then, I spent almost 10 years performing in numerous ensembles and orchestras in Germany and toured with Orchestra of Great Theater of Lodz in many countries all over the world.
From 2002 – 2005 he was first violinist at Lodz’s Operetta Theater.
I moved to Michigan in 2005, where he performs with Macomb, Jackson and Flat Rock Symphony Orchestras.

*** Lesson Details ***
The most interesting and beneficial thing about performing music is that it is one of the few activities that engages both the left and the right brain at the same time. I believe that every Human Being is precious and deserves to be nurtured and encouraged in a fun and loving environment. With that in mind, my teaching places equal importance on developing strong technique, and developing creativity. Students learn all the basics of music, and also spend time developing strong ensemble skills and strong background knowledge of style and repertoire, so that they can enjoy music in all kinds of settings, all their lives.
Our time spent together will be laid back and comfortable, yet challenging because that is probably why you want to take lessons.
Each lesson will conclude with an assignment of instrumental pieces/songs given to work on throughout the week—usually 2-3 short songs for 30-minute lessons, and 1-2 longer instrumental pieces for an hour-long lesson. These will be the same pieces we have worked on during the lesson time, so you will go home with the knowledge you need to master each piece. Music theory sheets and technique exercises will also be included in the assignments.
Within 6 months, you will begin discovering how to read music and understand the language of it. You will learn how to play some of your favorite songs/instrumental pieces and learn some that you might not know. We'll discover what you really want to learn and achieve through taking lessons, and we will work toward those goals!
Discipline is vital to musical progress and daily practice is strongly urged, in order for the student to progress. If a students don't practice, they won't progress. Because of that, you can expect that I will encourage consistent and regular practice, always keeping in mind that the study of music is meant to be fun.
Knowing from experience how "boring" it can be to learn by rote, I combine technical work with fun time playing duets together, improvising, and exploring a wide variety of styles and genres of music.
I would be honored to share my knowledge and love of music with you. Give yourself a priceless gift that will last a lifetime!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Grand Piano /Hammond Organ

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect the student to have their own instrument. I can provide the music stand and I always bring my own instrument so that I can demonstrate during lessons.

Zebie is great! I'm an adult beginner with practically no music background. He is very patient and encouraging, having to teach me about music more broadly in addition to how to play the violin. He is certainly very knowledgeable about all things violin and experienced as well. I also really appreciate the fact that he seems to celebrate the connection between player and instrument, and teaches you about the instrument as well if you are interested. I'm sure you'll enjoy learning from him!

I enjoy teaching and helping others learning about the piano. I am a patient, thorough and dedicated teacher. I will make sure that my student is able to achieve the personal and professional goals that we set together. My teaching style is very in depth, I teach classical, church, contemporary and gospel music genres. I can move at a fast pace or a slower pace, it mostly depends on the student. I feel that everyone has a different learning style and technique and it is best to work along those lines in order to attain the most promising outcome. I will create a very comprehensive lesson plan for the student incorporating their goals as well as my mine. I would expect my student to practice daily and be prepared to learn something new every lesson while also incorporating what they have learned thus far.

Teachers are nice, (specifically Ms. Patty and Ms. Linda), very professional, not or not so strict, not intimidating and very patient to the students. Both of them have very good experience in their own field of music knowledge and are very willing to share or pass on their expertise. With that, kids are always motivated to learn and attend every session, not to mention the rewards, student (i believe for younger kids only)can redeem for the good performance after a certain period. Location is good, studio is cool, cozy and very clean.

Benjamin M.

Ypsilanti, MI

As a professional musician, songwriter and composer, I often use the piano/keyboard for composition, arrangement and sound design. Although my primary instruments are alto saxophone and guitar, having piano skills have been an asset in visualizing the musical spectrum.

I've had two years formal training on Piano, and taught 2nd Year Piano in NYC public and private schools.

About Benjamin

Hello Future Students!

I recently moved from NYC to Ypsilanti - very close to Ann Arbor where I was born. 10 years on the East Coast and another 10 before that in Chicago has helped me develop Networking, Performance and Teaching. Whether you want to pursue a Musical Career or simply learn how to Play your Favorite Tunes for friends and family, I am here as your Teacher and Guide. I teach at my own home or through the use of Skype. I hope to get my Car fixed soon!

As a Father of four, I have had the joy in teaching my children Guitar, Saxophone, Songwriting, Composition and Keyboard. As
a parent I have found that Patience and Encouragement is sometimes the best form of support. It has been proven that learning Music helps develop intuition, self-awareness, and social skills as well as improve in other subjects not directly related to the arts such as Mathematics and Science.

One of the most important aspects of playing Music is being able to Play by Ear. This has been a priceless gift that I have developed throughout my life and I encourage all musicians, young and old, to do the same. The use of simple Rhythmic Dictation and Ear Training exercises can do wonders for "picking out" Beats and Harmonies no matter what Genre we are interested in.

I attended music courses at The Boston School of Contemporary Music, Thomas Jefferson College (MI), and have a BA double majoring in Music Composition and English at Columbia College Chicago.

Besides touring internationally as a Guitarist and Saxophonist, I am a Songwriter. THIRD BORDER's "Sun of Water; Sea of Light" was selected to be nominated for the Grammy's as The Best Alternative Album of the Year in 2006. On this record, I played Guitar, Saxophone, sang Lead Vocal and wrote all Songs. So, if you are a songwriter, we can polish up your approach!

If you would like to learn how to compose a Solo, a Duet or Ensemble, I can get you started in a low-stress, one-step-at-a-time procedure. As a Composer, I have done Sound Design for Film, Dance, Spoken Word and Multi-media Performance - most notably with renowned poet Anne Carson and former members of The Merce Cunningham Dance Co. I am Composer and Conductor for New York City's first full-on Saxophone Orchestra; a 13-member ensemble.

I hope to talk to you soon!
Benjamin

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching style is relaxed with a forte on Patience and Encouragement. Though I have specific expectations on what needs to be learned, I gear each lesson towards the student's wishes and their personal direction in Creativity. Although Ear Training and Rhythmic Dictation sound academic, they are very useful in understanding music. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced student, I can guide you wherever you are headed!

For Guitar (acoustic or electric), you will learn the fundamentals of Music Theory, Chord Structure, varied Strumming and Picking Techniques, and Scale Positions to travel from one part of the neck to the other. Any song you wish to learn, I can teach!

For Saxophone, you will learn proper Embouchure technique, Notation, Music Theory, and Scale Patterns for improvisation. Whether you are interested in a Classical, Blues, Funk or Jazz approach, I can help you find your own sound that is both personal and professional.

I teach 2nd year Piano and Drums/Percussion directing you into Intermediate level.

For those leaning toward the experimental genres, I am well-versed in the use of Electronics. Much can be accomplished with my lessons on Sound-Scape Improvisation either as 1 on 1 or Group Workshops.

*** Studio Equipment ***
At Home Studio: music stands, metronome, guitar amps, electric and acoustic guitars, guitar tablature, staff music paper, a scanner for weekly homework. I can also record and send MP3s of our lessons to review at home if you wish.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students will need their own instrument, a mutually chosen music book to learn from, a metronome, and hopefully easy access to a keyboard (very helpful!)

*** Specialties ***
I am fluent in Rock genres, Blues, Beginning Jazz, Beginning Classical technique, Prepared Guitar, Electronics/Sound Art.

Ben has been teaching my 8 year old daughter drum technique since Nov 2015. He has done a great job at connecting with her too make her excited about music! I appreciate how he encourages her play intuitively, which is teaching her principles that she can apply in all aspects of music, not just in playing the drums. I would recommend Ben for a student of any age, but I have been impressed with how he has connected with my daughter.
