*** Lesson Details ***
Being a musician is exciting, challenging, and of course, rewarding. Musicians are communicators; instruments of expression. I'm a firm believer in diligent practice habits and learning the fundamentals of one's craft. From there, the music can happen.

I offer a relaxed, comfortable learning environment that is both fun and productive. A stuffy, tense atmosphere promotes timidness, and insecurity, the opposite of the environment I foster in my studio.

So let me tell you about Matthew. I came into his lessons with some weird songs that originated from Japan and when we went over them, the songs were so fast that he could hardly believe that people sang them. But even so, he took on the challenge of something he hadn't heard of before and worked with me to improve what I needed to in order to take on the challenges I wanted to face. I feel within the past 12 weeks I've improved so much on breath control, posture, confidence, mixing my music, overall singing with chest, full voice and even in my falsetto. He'll teach you how to keep your voice nice and open, pays close attention to your movements so he can correct you, and is overall just so very knowledgable about the world of singing and more.

He's even agreed to take it to the next level with some research on how to do some dangerous sounding screaming. This guy takes any challenge you throw at him, makes sure you are informed about how each skill/warm-up/style is completed and if you practice, with his help, you'll be sounding so much better and stronger in no time. I'd hire him if I were you. He's a great teacher, a great guy, very flexible and a joy to learn from.

I have wanted to sing since I was a kid, but never got around to taking lessons in high school or college. I signed up for Matt's weekly lessons on a whim and saw he had some good reviews. His students were right on.

Matt is very knowledgeable about different areas of music and in addition to teaching me how to sing, taught me how to tune my bass guitar and the basics of drumming at my request.

His practice room is nice, and its easy to find of 95. He's also a really chill guy and easy to take instruction from.

Highly recommend to everyone.

Matt was amazing! These lessons were a first for my 10 year old daughter, and Matt's style and demeanor were perfect! He's very knowledgeable, kind and patient - characteristics I was looking for in a vocal coach. I would highly recommend him to anyone who has a child with a passion for singing and wants to develop it.

Douglas A.

Middlebury, CT

Learn popular or classic songs in a systematic and clear manner!

About Douglas

Doug, 27, is quickly becoming one of Connecticut’s most up and coming drummers and teachers when it comes to Connecticut drum lessons. A graduate of Western Connecticut State University (WCSU), Alley obtained a Bachelor’s of Science in Music Education with an emphasis in classical percussion in 2011. Studying under the tutelage of Dave Smith and Patrick Smith (New Haven Symphony), he would eventually obtain his Connecticut State Teaching Certification the following year in 2012.

At WCSU, Alley vigorously studied all of the major percussion instruments. He focused most of his energy on sna
re drum, marimba, and timpani, but also fell in love with playing all of the percussion accessories. Spending hours each day practicing various orchestral excerpts on different percussion instruments, he would always find himself being drawn back to his first passion, the drum set.

Currently, Doug is the drummer of the hard rock band, Mile Marker Zero (MMZ), and his music has been promoted on various platforms including the Rock Band video game series on XBOX.

While playing with MMZ, Doug has been fortunate enough to be featured twice in Modern Drummer Magazine. The first being in October 2009 in the article “30 Drum Stars Give it Up For Neil Peart,” alongside famous percussionists including Cindy Blackman (Lenny Kravitz, Mike Stern), Daniel Adair (Nickleback), Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson), Jon Wysocki (Staind), and many others. He also had a blog feature on www.moderndrummer.com in January 2014.

While performing with MMZ, Doug has shared the stage with some of the world’s best drummers such as Gavin Harrison (King Crimson, Porcupine Tree), Matt Halpern (Periphery), Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, Adrenaline Mob, Winery Dogs), and Nick D’Virgilio (Spock’s Beard). Alley has also performed and recorded with other Connecticut powerhouses as a session drummer, continually entertaining audiences nation wide with his energetic performances and famous “comfy” feel.

Doug Alley has been giving drum and percussion lessons in the New Haven County for the past seven years. In that time period, he has learned what works best for young students to gain their full potential whether it is playing drum set for their school’s jazz band, or xylophone for a high school marching band.

Being a certified music teacher for the State of Connecticut, Doug understands the importance of a constructed and organized lesson plan to make sure his students succeed. Each drum and percussion lesson is built for the individualized needs of the student he is teaching, while remaining in a very relaxed and fun atmosphere.

While taking lessons, students will be given the opportunity to learn the following:

Rudiments
Music Theory
Sight Reading
Proper Technique
Fills
All styles of drumming, including Rock, Jazz, Metal, Funk, Hip-Hop, Classical, marching, and more

Barry S.

Danbury, CT

About Barry

Hi! My name is Barry and I have been teaching for over 10 years in the Fairfield County, CT area. I have had success teaching all ages, styles and abilities, from the most gifted to the physically impaired. I grew up listening to a tremendously wide range of music, and have studied classical flute, rock, jazz and classical guitar, and even the japanese shakuhachi, with some of the great minds of the instruments. I graduated high honors from Queens College with a Masters' in composition, and have had works performed by major acts in the contemporary classical scene. In jazz, I have shared the s
tage and recording studio with the likes of Marc Ribot and William Parker; I have quite a bit of experience as a performer that I bring to my teaching. My passion for music is addictive; I have turned the least motivated students into consummate music lovers. My goal is to find a student's personal musical voice so they have the opportunity to discover where THEIR musical passion lies. Whether it be country, rock and roll, or classical, the long term goal is to both teach the student what they love, as well as expand their musical horizons to discover things they may never have thought they would love.

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach in a fairly laid back style with an emphasis on technique, theory making the most of your practice time. Starting with a set curriculum, the material moves into more student chosen songs as the lessons progress. The idea is to communicate the connections between music with the goal of expanding the students ear and teaching them to listen; not just in music but in every aspect of life.

*** Studio Equipment ***
room in basement piano, drumset, mixer seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students should have their own instruments and amplification for electric guitar, music stand and place to take lessons in their home. If they don't, I am knowledgeable of the local music stores and can recommend places to either buy or rent instruments. I provide practice sheets and curriculum.

*** Specialties ***
In general, for each instrument I teach I have a cirriculum for the primer/beginning level. Once that level is reached, the direction becomes more student driven; that is if the student responds to classical music (for instance), we will focus on that. As the students interests change, the lesson development changes and the student grows as a musician. That being said, I am primarily a classical pianist, and a jazz/rock guitarist/drummer. While I am a classically trained flautist, much of my gigging and recording experience is with rock bands.

Very good experience.

Barry has great patience....I enjoy my lessons, but I don't always practice as much as I should so I'm not as good at this as I might otherwise be. He makes the learning experience very worthwhile. It makes me want to stick with it. He definitely gets an A+!!

He has also given presentations on the importance of installing/maintaining a music and arts curriculum in the Connecticut public school system as well as the history and proper care of mallet percussion instruments.

As a performing musician, Dale has appeared in several venues across the state, most recently at the storied Shubert Theater in New Haven, which hosted the world premiere of Dale's "Les Reves de Jeunesse Oubliée," an original piano solo that was well-received. He hosted his first Composition Recital on April 3, 2012 at the Von Der Mehden Recital Hall, where Dale showcased six live, original works, including a piano solo, a euphonium solo, a woodwind sextet, and a percussion quartet. Dale has played in live productions and musicals with both the Connecticut Repertory Theater and the Church of the Resurrection Youth Group, while winning numerous awards for his musicianship, including Lyman Hall’s “Outstanding Musician Award” for three consecutive years. Naugatuck, CT

My students will learn the art of rhythm not only through how to read music but also how to keep time and become focused and engaged in the material I give. I am fun and every single student will be able to play on the drum set in their first lesson. Most of my students have gone on to perform at festivals such as Vibes which is one of the biggest festivals in New England. My students will not only learn how to read classically but will be able to play any modern songs of our day.
