I have been teaching flute for almost 20 years. I have a doctorate in flute performance and have done training and extensive research in body mapping and efficiency of body use. I take a very holistic approach to teaching and playing the flute. Each student is a person, an individual unlike anyone else. Every body is unique and therefore will play the flute differently than other flutists. When I teach, I aim to get to know the whole person in order to effectively work with the flutist. I work to get to know how each student learns and processes information. A flutist cannot become a good musician without making the journey their own. My goal is to give every student their own individual path to reach their goals, while also giving them the tools to use in their own teaching of individual flutists. I emphasize these specific areas in my teaching: the physical aspects of flute playing, including playing position and posture, breath control, sound and tone production, projection and ...

Dr. John Ross is an excellent teacher! He helped me take the music I was preparing to record to a whole new level. He has so much knowledge and can present that knowledge in a way that is approachable for students of any level. I am so thankful I got to study with him!!!

John is an outstanding player and pedagogue. Over a number of years, I've observed John work with students of incredibly diverse backgrounds, ages, and skill levels. With each and every student, John connects with the individual, finding what will help that person rise to their fullest potential as a flute player. Technical progress is a given when studying with John. Additionally, students consistently enter his lessons eager to learn and leave with a renewed drive to grow. I cannot recommend John highly enough.

Hear me out- The piano may be the easiest instrument to play physically and one of the hardest to play mentally.

Easy to play physically:
With the piano, just hit a key to make a sound come out. Thats it. No fighting with the reed on a saxophone, killin' your cheeks on a trumpet, or building calluses on the guitar.

Hard to play mentally:
Almost all other instruments require both hands to create sound. Strings require one hand to choose a note on a string while the other hand plucks or bows it and all wind instruments require both hands to pick a note while your breath plays it. We already know to play the piano you just hit a button... this means each hand can hit a button. You can now make two sounds at once, independently from each other. It's like playing two instruments at once.

This lets us start simple because its easy to play, but allows us to grow in so many topics because of the pianos "harmonic depth." Try learning chords and theory on a horn instrument which ...

By the time I was in middle school, I was writing music for the piano and violin. Ohio State expanded my horizons, as professors gave me assignments to write for other instruments in different and more modern styles. At the same time, I developed my interest in pop/rock music and devoted time to songwriting. Whether you want to write a string quartet or a rock anthem, I can help you. My goal is to have you discover your own compositional style rather than mimic mine.

"First Time Student

My son has been taking drum lessons with Mike for several months. He had never played drums prior to his first lesson and Mike has been nothing but patient and very professional with him. My son really enjoys the lessons and is learning so much more than I expected. Super happy with Mike and his knowledge of the drums along with his patience and communication. Would highly recommend him!"

"Andree-Ann is a great teacher! I hadn't formally played piano in about twenty years when I decided to start taking lessons again. It's like she picked me up and scrubbed all the rust off and now I'm playing better than I think I ever played. She's super patient, breaks the music down into digestible parts, tells you what you need to work on but also acknowledges your improvements and the things you've done well. As an adult learner, the pieces I'm working on is mostly self-directed with her guidance, which is cool. I would totally recommend her."

"I have been studying with Ahmad for just about 2 months. But that's enough for me to say he is an awesome guitar teacher. I think his teaching experience and method is a huge advantage for people who need professional guidance.

I was self-teaching for about a year before I came to Ahmad. It worked out just fine. I learned something. But I started to get confused at a point where I don't know how to move forward. I like a very specific group of guitarist (mostly Japanese fingerstyle players). And I wanted to learn how to master songs from those guitarist. And there is no such website or book that would teach me how to do that. Most of the guitar books or websites either give out general informations or put all information together as a mess.

Finally I decided to find a teacher. I found the lesson with Ahmad pretty effective. He is an experienced teacher who knows what you need to learn in order to achieve your goal. He has plenty of handouts that really helps me practice. The most important thing I learned from him is the big picture of guitar learning. For example, I learned the connection between scales and chords, why/how to improvise with these, how to go from there to other relevant things, etc.

When I look back over a year, I realize I have wasted some much time and effort trying to teach myself and wish it could have similar outcome as having a good teacher. Studying with Ahmad saves me so much time and effort (because it's actually easier!)"

My son is occasionally a difficult child with his own special quirks, but David is so patient and observant and tailors the lessons as we go along week to week to keep my son engaged, encouraged and learning. I also have two younger children who must tag along to the lesson and even they are excited during the lessons and are already asking when they start their lessons!
