Music theory is a fancy term for "how to think about music". If you wish to learn how and why certain music sounds like it does or makes you feel the way it does, we can explore these theories and concepts to develop different strategies to help you reach the next level of artistic expression.

About Richard

Music is my life. Since the age of 16, I have studied the guitar extensively. During my high-school years I was involved in band, marching band, choir, and independent music theory. I started my first band when I was 19 in the U.S. Army, and my life has never been the same since. I played music

Richard was amazing! Always a joy to have him in the house. He was always on time and well prepared for our daughter's lessons. He also kept the lessons entertaining for her. Our daughter learned a lot and definitely improved quite a bit during the time he worked with her. We would highly recommend Richard to any parent with a child interested in learning and playing guitar.

If I could give Brian 10 stars, I would. He is enthusiastic, present, supportive and highly knowledgeable. Learning instruments has always been a challenge for me , but Brian makes being a banjo beginner an absolute joy. I look forward to practicing every day, and can really hear my progress - which amazes me because it's only been just over a month. I can see myself working with Brian for the long haul. He puts me at ease, and always gives great responsive tips that improve my playing immediately. I feel SO lucky to have stumbled across his profile.

I provide a fun experience of learning to play and share music. My philosophy in working with students is to curb their interests with my vision for their success with technique and musicality. I want my student to not only become good cellist, but also enjoy music on a theoretical and historical level. My overall goal is to make a connection with people that will last and music can be an outlet for growing as a person.

About Carrie

Carrie recently relocated to Ann Arbor Michigan after finishing her masters to start a cello studio and freelance. Since moving she has performed with the Jackson Symphony, South West Symphony Orchestra, and West Symphony Orchestra. Carrie Miller studied at Florida State University with Greg Saue

Carrie is a fantastic cello instructor! I've learned so much from her in a very short period of time. She is cheerful and supportive, while remaining constructive and methodical in her pedagogy. I have been teaching classical guitar for over 13 years. Curriculum is student-specific but in most cases will include left and right hand technique, rhythm, dynamics, sight-reading, chord theory, etc.

About Matt

Hi! My name is Matt M. and I am the owner and founder of Black & White Music Services, Inc., a professional music education and production company. I began teaching at a fairly early age and moved to teaching privately over 9 years ago. I have a deep passion for music and the guitar and do my bes

Matt continues to challenge me. His teaching methods are great - he doesn't just teach techniques, he immediately puts techniques to work by applying them to a song I would like to learn. He is also very good about explaining the reasoning behind certain techniques/habits.

Excellent. Didn’t need so much info about electric guitars since we’re just starting and have an acoustic guitar. Otherwise, excellent.

Matt was very thorough in determining my current skill level (which is basically beginner with some previous limited exposure to music and some self-taught cowboy chords). He asked me what I wanted to focus on and worked with me on beginning to change some bad habits/techniques that I had developed. Matt didn't just instruct, he EXPLAINED. I felt that the lesson was much more of a mutual discussion than a lecture/demonstration, which is a great thing. I felt very comfortable and believe that Matt's teaching techniques will help me achieve my goals.

"Sasha is awesome! I'm 18 and I've been taking guitar and voice lessons from Sasha for several months now and I've improved way more than I expected. She really listens to her customers and tailors the lessons to each individual. I choose which songs I want to learn each week, and she teaches me exactly what I want to know. Couldn't have asked for a better instructor--I'm so pleased with all she's helped me accomplish."

""I've been going to lessons with Susan since the middle of June and I am so impressed! My parents have noticed that my singing voice has gotten much better with every single lesson that I've had with her. Susan is a very caring, gentle woman and I never feel judged when I'm singing with her. She gives credit where credit is due and helps you improve in aspects of your voice without making you feel bad about yourself. I definitely recommend choosing Susan to be you or your child's vocal coach!"

"My 10 year old son has no musical knowledge what-so-ever. We wanted him to have some basics, and he was curious about the guitar. Sadly our family isn't musical and it's hard to know where to start. We were lucky to have engaged Stephen. His calm, patient, encouraging approach has been the perfect complement to my son's temperament.

When I overhear snippets of exchanges during their lesson I am excited that my son is making connections and having a conversation about what he's learning. I can't support his instruction because of my complete inability to read sheet music—so I am particularly pleased that he seems to be making observations and taking small steps towards understanding something that confounds me.

My son looks forward to his time with teacher and (so far) is interested in practicing too. Of course we'd recommend Stephen!"
