I have been a voice, acting, and teacher of creative arts for over 25 years. My background includes ten years of classical voice training with Maestro Julio Berrocal, as well as vocal training through the Feldenkrais approach with Marcy Lindhiemer. In acting, I have studied with renowned Stanislavsky scholar Sonia Moore and Master acting teacher of the Strasberg Method, Marcia Haufrecht. I received a B.A. For comparative literature and creative writing at the State University of New York at Purchase and have recently completed my Master's degree in social work at Walden University. *** Lesson Details *** Voice I am an empathetic teacher, sensitive to the student's individual process of learning. My singing lessons usually start with breathing and relaxation exercises. Vocal technique exercises come next. When the student is fully warmed up, we will begin to work on songs. It is important that students be a part of the process of picking material since the more personally they respond to the material the more apt they are to become engaged in their lessons. After three to six months beginning students will have gained an understanding of the fundamentals of breathing, relaxation, and basic performance skills. With more advanced students the focus will be on range extension and the on-going development of vocal style through song interpretation and performance related exercises. Acting As an acting teacher and coach, I tailor my classes to the needs of each student. I utilize improvisatory and sensory techniques to help unleash spontaneity. I also encourage the students to use their personal experiences as a way to access a full range of emotions. I enjoy working with the student on script analysis, so as to discover the underlying motivations of the character the student is working on. Creative and Lyric Writing I use prompts as a way to get the student writing. Often, I will ask the student to write for stretches of time without editing themselves. It is important to unleash imagination before beginning the process of editing. Many times it is the unexpected that is the most compelling.

A very good first lesson. We went over breathing exercises and scales. Also had time for Amy to critique my speaking style through a portion of a speech I will be giving in a month. Time well-spent.
She briefly went over the next lesson plan and gave me a little homework to do as well.
I got a lot out of this lesson and I can see how this will help me accomplish my goal of being a better public speaker and having a more controlled and stronger voice.

This is a weekly program with 30 minute TUTORING sessions or a full comprehensive course of 45 minutes per week. *** Lesson Details *** I am a very laid back instructor, though the classes are very well structured.
Usually, we progress with a chosen curriculum according to the student's or parent's vision and initial overview during the 1st few classes. However, all curriculums are supplemented to enhance student performance and comprehension. Our supplemental material is used to go swifter for material that you grasp well and understand, and slower with more repetition for that that you need more practice, without being monotonous. It is also used to provide appropriate but exciting reinforcement of all material to ensure that material is retained.

Matt has been awesome for my student. His math skills have improved greatly, and his writing has come from illegible to what can now be described as neat and readable. Matt has been very patient and deliberate with our son and has taken the time to really explain things to Jake in a way he can understand. Julia creates her own curriculum which is better than anything my daughters receive in their schools.
I see marked improvements in their grades for this past year, and my eldest is actually skipping fourth grade as a result of lessons. I am astounded as to my girls' progress, and greatly appreciative of our tutor's expertise.
Her patient, methodical approach to teaching is why I see us remaining with her for all of our educational instruction. She has already taught arithmetic to my youngest (3rd grade), and algebra to my eldest (starting 5th this sept!), and is proceeding with more advanced math with no issue whatsoever. I cannot recommend her enough.

After my recent implosion onto a library book, as mentioned in my article of July 4, 2012, I returned my proofreading book to the library with such shame I felt I could not show any librarian my true identity. I inserted the wet (and now moldy) proofreading book (in a plastic bag) with a profuse apology note to all librarians everywhere, into the book drop box. Have mercy, I did not finish the proofreading book before I wrote this. And I saw a gang of red hatted women congregating around the periphery of the library. I take this as a very good sign that my month will improve now that I fessed up.

Just as a jeweler would not be able to sell rough stones, Jill would not have been able to make anything in the publishing field without employing these principles. Her college papers would have been fair to dull rocks. She can say this as the daughter of a bricklayer who was the son of a stonemason in a familial line that dates back to middle 1600. So, of course, I did learn about laying bricks and throwing rocks too. Not very many structures
stand the test of time when we throw rocks (rough drafts). Only with this brick, mortar, and finish will the building stand. But enough about my lineage. My capstone point is that the finishing point of any building or writing should communicate a great product. In creating this description I had the above principles in mind. My college papers, business papers, copywriting, web designs, resumes, and even informal conversations are inclusive of this process of which proofreading is a vital component. Why? Well, I might want to throw a rock at myself if I assume myself incapable of accomplishing as much. And as the daughter of a bricklayer, I think I know about bricks and buildings, and mortar, and capstones such as proofreading. So now at my concluding paragraph contains the capstone of what is called proofreading. Proofreading, as my gem of a teacher told me, is constructed with similar principles. It contains a precise methodology which assures great communication. I would like to involve you in this structure. Please step in the door so I may explain the steps involved in editing and proofreading as art, the elements and principles of Art and English as your toolkit, and design as your structured building of success!
