About Angela
Hi! My name is Angela, and I teach private piano, voice, and theory lessons. I love teaching, and have taught many ages (3 to 93) and ability levels (novice to advanced). I am a dependable, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic teacher. I offer lessons for 30, 45, or 60-minute weekly sessions in my home studio. I do not offer bi-weekly lessons or lessons in the student's home.

My home is a split-level, with my private living area above and my music studio below. There is a waiting area just outside the music studio, as well as a half-bath specifically designated for students and parents. The studio itself contains a piano and organ, my personal music library, and additional seating for parents. There is a full-length mirror for vocal students to watch their performance skills grow, and a gumball machine for when younger students have an exce
ptionally good lesson.

Making music is a skill which can bring lifelong joy to the musician as well as everyone around them. While I can easily ensure that my students enjoy music-making while they are taking lessons, my ultimate goal is that students continue to want to make music throughout their entire life, even after they stop taking lessons. I firmly believe that my job as a teacher is to train my students to be independent and self-sufficient musicians. Many teachers teach by rote, playing a passage to a student and then having the student play it back. Though this method is helpful in some situations, students who are taught in this manner often find that they are only able to play the songs taught to them in lessons, and that to learn a new song they must have a teacher by their side showing them how the song goes. In my lessons, however, students are taught to learn their own music through sight-reading, ear-training, music theory, and listening to and critiquing their own playing. Over time, this allows the student more and more freedom to make music without a teacher.

Angela is the most inspiring teacher I've ever had. Aside from having played the violin for a year prior, I was a complete adult beginner on piano. My passion is Baroque-era keyboard works, and Angela immediately got me started on Bach Prelude No. 2 from 12 Little Preludes. Within 12 lessons, I was able to play the entire piece with ease. Before starting with Angela, If you would have told me that in under 12 weeks I'd be playing Bach, I'd have called you crazy. Angela's strong suit is that she is confident that you can play any piece you put your mind to, regardless of experience, while inspiring and motivating you to do so.

Aside from technique, each lesson was equivalent to a college course in music theory. She understands that technique is only half of playing an instrument and the importance of knowing the reason each note falls where it does. This may sound overwhelming, but Angela never gives you more than you can handle, while challenging you to improve at a rapid pace. It was an extremely gratifying experience and I am thrilled at the progress that I made in under a year.

I hired Dan to teach guitar to my 13-year-old godson and I cannot be happier. Dan is everything he wrote in his profile and more. He was definitely prepared and he was patient and he really connected with my godson. After he left, my godson was extremely excited and happy that I hired Dan to teach him guitar.

About Mari
Welcome to my music studio!

This will be a fun, incredible way to start or continue your music instruction. I have been a private violin and piano instructor since 1991. I took a break in 2005 while my kids were little. Now that they have grown up a bit, I am so excited to come back to this!

My teaching methods involve reading notes. I do not teach the Suzuki method. If that is what you are looking for, I can refer you to some wonderful local teachers. I will have 2 recitals a year and some workshops and clinics in between.

Thank you and I am looking forward to taking this musical journey with you!

Recitals and Performances: I will schedule 2 recitals a year and I highly encourage students to attend and participate in both.

Practice: A student's progress is 100% based on the practicing that takes place at home. I recom
mend having a scheduled time everyday that is dedicated to uninterrupted practice time. For 30 minute lessons, I recommend a 30 minute practice.

Books and Materials: On the first day, I will have books that you can buy from me. Please bring books to every lesson.
PIANO STUDENTS: It is crucial that you have a working piano at home. While I understand it's a huge commitment to buy/rent a piano, playing on a keyboard is not the same. The exception is if you have a full size keyboard (88 keys), with touch sensitivity.
VIOLIN/VIOLA STUDENTS: PLEASE consult me before you buy/rent a violin. There are several places that you can buy a violin 'package' for $99. For not much more, you can have a violin that is higher quality and will sound better. Remember, you only sound as good as your instrument! I know several reputable places that rent instruments that are of high quality.

Summer Schedule: I will try and be as accommodating as possible for the summer. If you know already which days you will be gone, let me know and we can work it into the calendar.

My approach to teaching lessons has always been with a gentle, calm demeanor. However, that said, I do want my students to excel and feel challenged. If at any time, you have concerns, please don't hesitate to talk to me about them. I want this to be a fun experience and the only way to ensure that is to make sure that the port of communication is always open. Thank you and let's get started!

I absolutely loved learning from Mari for my piano lessons! As an adult learner, I felt like my brain doesn't work as fast as it used to, so learning a new instrument was difficult, but Mari completely caters each lesson to my learning speed and maximized my abilities. She takes into accounts the areas and types of music I wanted to learn and helped me to achieve being able to play that type of music. I also loved and appreciated that she works around my busy work schedule and accommodating lessons when plans change throughout the week. I would highly recommend Mari as a music teacher to anyone interested in learning a new instrument at all ages!

It was apparent in the first lesson that Susanna is an experienced, understanding, thorough, and patient teacher. She carefully covered all the basics: different parts of the violin, proper posture, finger positions, etc., making it easy for our daughter to get started on the violin. She corrected our daughter’s mistakes right away and moved on only when our daughter got a good grasp of the material.

Charlie is an awesome teacher and my 6 year old enjoys the guitar lessons. We like him so much better than the original independent teacher we had, with whom we felt rushed all the time, and we didn't get our money worth. With Charlie is different, he is patient and has the right approach for kids beginners; we highly recommend him to others.

About Chris
I am originally from Houston, TX and began playing the guitar at the age of eight and began studying classical guitar at age ten.

While studying jazz at the High School for the Visual and Performing Arts in Houston TX, I began working professionally as a guitarist, playing locally in clubs and at corporate functions. It was also during this time that I first began teaching private music lessons at my local music store.

While attending the University of Miami under music scholarship, I performed in the award-winning University of Miami Concert Jazz Band and played with jazz greats Wynton Marsalis, Joe Lovano and others. I also played in several bands and with numerous local artists.

Upon graduating from college, I coached a jazz guitar ensemble of five undergraduate guitarists and a rhythm section at the University of Miami and
also led the jazz guitar program at Miami’s arts magnet high school, “New World School of the Arts” and taught jazz improvisation to a large class of multi-instrumentalists.

In 2000, I moved to New York City and began playing guitar for neo-soul songstress Angie Stone. We toured nationally in support of her album, “Mahogany Soul” and appeared on the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno”, “Live at the Apollo” and BET’s “106th and Park”. During this time I also performed, recorded and/or toured the US and Japan with Interscope Records avant-garde R&B artist Bilal Oliver, African pop singer and superstar fusion bassist Richard Bona and Japanese jazz pioneer and saxophonist Sadao Watanabe. Along with balancing performing, songwriting and recording, I taught guitar, bass and piano privately to a wide variety of students.

After moving to Japan in 2004, I performed with numerous bands and artists including Japanese taiko drummer Isaku Kageyama. Our CD, “Hybrid Soul”, a creative collaboration fusing musical elements from Japanese folk songs, psychedelic rock and ambient music was released in 2011.

I have over 30 years' experience as both a performer and teacher and this helps me instill confidence in my students and I am able to help them quickly progress on the guitar and have fun doing it!

“Chris was hired by our family several years ago to teach our two teenage sons to play guitar... His musical talent and knowledge along with his focus, maturity, creativeness and personality allows his students to receive his lessons with enthusiasm and retention." - Nancy C. (parent)

I am a novice guitar player who knew a few basic chords before enrolling with lessons from Chris. Since i had an elementary knowledge of playing, Chris asked some questions before we got started on what I was struggling with, and hurdles i was facing.

From there each successive lesson we attacked those weak areas of my play. I was able to get incrementally better each week from the advice and handouts he offered, overall elevating my ability to play dramatically.

Chris is a very down to earth guy - and despite being an excellent musician was not even a little pretentious in carefully explaining concepts that were basic, but that i needed to know.

Overall, Chris takes the time to very effectively communicate how you can improve your guitar skills, and if you put in the practice from his instruction - you'll see the results.

He's also a nice guy and very easy to talk to.

I play saxophone, drums, piano, and bass for groups such as Thankusomuch, Integer, Mordecai, Othership Connection, and SARCA.

I am a signed artist at Marmoset Music Licensing in Portland, and have independently released six albums that were al

I love education, and really enjoy passing the skills I've gained along to enthusiastic students. Passion is a very important factor of musicianship to me; don't do it if you don't love it.

My teaching philosophy is to serve as a resource to students, or even, to act as a sounding board for them and their ideas. I evaluate the student's strengths and weaknesses over a few diagnostic lessons, then I determine what the student wants from lessons. The curriculum I build is based entirely on what I feel will help the student thrive most, but while also remaining wary of supporting their desires.

I feel like teaching musical concepts also makes me stronger at them, so I strive to keep myself honest while providing a clear pathway to steady progress with my students.

Nobody becomes a superstar overnight; I'm here to continue to push until my students can achieve new heights.
