Scott is a an internationally touring guitarist and songwriter based in New York. In addition to his work as an in demand sideman for various artists and bands around the country, Scott is also an accomplished bandleader and composer with four acclaimed releases under his belt over the last ten years.

Scott is not only an amazing guitarist, but he is a superb teacher. Kind, supportive, and has an uncanny ability to break-down difficult pickings and strums into understandable and easy to follow directions. Most importantly, very patient. I was self-taught in the 70s when everyone picked up a guitar, stopped as an adult and am now re-starting it again after 30 years-and enjoying every moment. Scott is able to teach any type of music or song and intuitively understands and teaches the guitar style that the student would like to learn. Any student who studies with Scott should consider themselves fortunate. Not only does he know his stuff, he is passionate about music and passing on this musical knowledge to his students.

I will provide you access to materials and opportunities unique to your interests, in and outside of lesson times. But I will let you determine your own pace. LESSON DETAILS
Basically, what you need to start is motivation and commitment! I will then spend the first lesson discussing your materials needs based on what method/keyboard you currently use or prefer to use (if you have one), allowing you to make requests for information before proceeding further. Otherwise, I will provide you with informed recommendations. Equally important, at your first lesson I will work with you to determine what specific goals you have so we can track them, together, and meet them, one by one!

I make special efforts to invest in each student’s particular needs to help them move beyond blocks and weaknesses, utilizing a variety of tools such as flash cards and supplemental workbooks, e.g. ear training, sight reading, note spelling, etc. as necessary.

Broad background muscially, interesting, and effective communicator

I’m an adult who has played the piano for years on and off. Because of my prior experience I often ask questions that a beginner would not think about. Such as, is this a better scale fingering than the traditional one? Or what is a common key to use to accompany a sing-a-along group on a piano? Dorothea consistently provides intelligent and sometimes surprising answers to my questions.

She also is very focused on what you want to accomplish. Unlike past piano teachers, and I loved them all, who seemed intent on my learning the full classical literature, Dorothea asks what your main interest is. Is it composition, or playing, or arranging? Then she drives the lessons in that direction. Very customized lessons.

Another interesting example is scales. What’s new in that area, I thought? So she pulls out a book that has clearly defined levels of accomplishment. For example, if you can play the C major scale, quarter note = 80, with your left hand, you get one “point”. If you can do the same with your right, that’s another point. Playing with both hands together is yet another point. Playing both hands together but in contrary motion is another point. This pattern is repeated at increasing tempos and the number of points accumulated indicates your skill level. With that approach it’s not a matter of how long one practices but one practices long enough to reach a desired, measurable, skill level. I think that approach is novel and I had never seen it used before meeting Dorothea. In short, she is an interesting teacher with interesting ideas, methods, and very student focused. I don't think you will find a better teacher.

I have been singing since I was 3, anything and everything from Michael Jackson to Elvis Presley to Luciano Pavarotti. Originally from Colorado, I studied music/theatre, as well as vocal pedagogy at The University of Colorado at Boulder, where I graduated with highest honors. I made my Broadway debut in "The Phantom of the Opera" at age 24. I also performed in "Chess in concert" as a featured rock tenor soloist at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Broadway with Josh Groban. I have understudied and performed lead roles in the first AEA National Tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s "Whistle Down the Wind." Regionally, I have played many lead roles all over the United States in productions including "Les Miserables," "Miss Saigon," "The Wild Party," and "She Loves Me."

As an ASCAP recording artist, currently I am working in the studio with a full production team on my first pop/rock album. I also often sing on demos for producers and write songs for other artists in many different genres.

As a TV/Film actor, most recently I was on set with Marvel's TIARA 2 on Netflix. I have booked lead roles in 4 SAG-AFTRA short films, as well as the comedic lead in a SAG-AFTRA Web-series. I have been writing songs for more than 8 years and have recorded 6 full length albums of original material in a variety of genres including rock, blues, country, reggae, bluegrass, Americana, and folk. My students can expect professional, expert advise from a working performance artist. One of my main philosophies is a focus on fun. If music is fun, then students will practice more - which leads to accelerating returns. My students can expect lessons tailored to their specific goals. My first lesson with Richard was great! He explained how to set everything up and a few fundamentals in a way that we were able to get through them fairly quick and we got right to the fun part. I found myself playing a few cords and jamming with Richard halfway through my first 45 minute class. This is exactly why I wanted to have an instructor, so I can reap the benefits almost immediately, which makes me want to come back for more.

My name is Victoria. I'm originally from beautiful San Diego, California, but I am now a full time professional musician based out of Philadelphia. I've instructed students (of varying ages and backgrounds) from all over the country on bass, guitar, live performance, and song writing. This includes one-on-one instruction and group lessons. I received a certification in live performance, studio work, and songwriting through The Contemporary Music Center, now located in Nashville, TN. Now, let me also clarify that my positive attitude and laid back demeanor are not excuses for students to be undisciplined and uncommitted. I promise to work hard toward your development as a musician to make you the best you can be, and I appreciate the same commitment from all of my students.
Music should be enjoyable, but also rewarding and enriching to your life! I don’t want to sell that short!

Below is a basic rundown of what a student can expect to learn while under my instruction. I would first like to preface this information by saying that I fully recognize that every student is different; therefore, I tailor lessons to fit an individual’s needs and goals. Because of this, the priority of certain skills tends to vary from one student to another, as does the order in which this skills are taught. I also want to note that I tend to use some self-made resources (charts, explanations, etc) in addition to published books. Taking into consideration the aforementioned variables, here is the basic rundown of the material I try to cover with students, in the general order it is taught:

-Understanding of guitar parts (anatomy of the instrument) and basic terms (ie note, chord, etc).
-Names of strings (E-string, B-string, etc.) and corresponding numbers for strings (1-6), and which fingers are given what numbers.
-Tuning of the instrument
-Basic technique (how to finger a fret board, hold guitar, hold pick, etc).
-How to find notes on the fret board/chromatic
-Basic rhythm concepts and counting (whole notes, quarter notes, time signatures, etc)—usually involves clapping exercise, single note playing exercises, reading rhythm charts, and learning what different note values look like.
-Basic concepts of “keys”
-Basic major and minor scales (especially for “warming up”)
-Chords (mostly basic open chords)
-Strumming
-Learning songs to put concepts together
For more advanced students, we will likely get into the following:
-Power chords, bar chords, and complex chords beyond majors and minors.
-Scales beyond basic majors and minors
-Music theory (chord construction, modes, etc).
-Knowledge of gear (for those guitarist who wish to branch out to electric guitar)—bass players will already have to know some of this before moving to more advanced work since they already require an amp.
-How to play with other musicians and instruments (collaboration, listening, understanding each instrument’s part, etc).

[To give students a basic timeline for these skills, one can expect to be playing open chords within three months and probably their favorite songs within 6 months]

About David
Composer and guitarist David began formal music training at the age of 5 on the drums. He taught himself guitar as a teenager and began playing in local rock bands. Initially entering college as a Journalism major, his passion for music led him to Meramec College where he studied Music Theory with Robert C. Howard and classical guitar with Larry Bolles. From 1990 through 1993, he attended Webster University, and became only the second composer in the school's history to receive the BM/MM Scholarship. While at Webster, he studied composition with Dr. Kendall Stallings, Robert Chamberlin, and Kim Portnoy, Jazz History with Paul Demarinis, and 18th Century Counterpoint with Dr. Eloise Jarvis. During his education, he performed with many student ensembles and sat in on master classes by the great sitarist and surbaharist, Imrat Khan and jazz
guitarist Peter Leitch.

In 1993 he started St. Louis SoundWorks with Grammy nominated Adam Long and Mark McClanahan that specialized in mobile recording, and composing music for films and commercials.

As a musician, David has composed over 200 pieces for various instruments and combinations from small chamber ensembles to full orchestra. He was bandleader of two creative ensembles that focused on alternative notation compositions and improvised music, and later co-founded the avant-garde influenced rock band Diverted Course which released two CD's.

As a teacher, David has taught classical guitar and musicianship as an adjunct faculty member at Meramec College and Webster University. He has given seminars on the music of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, and Anthony Braxton. He has been teaching privately for 23 years and many of his students have gone on to successful music careers and performed all over the world.

I teach students of all ages in a fun and positive manner. I am flexible and will tailor the lessons to satisfy your own individual goals. Whether you are a beginner that wants to gain a foundation in technique, sight reading, and basic theory or an intermediate or more advanced player that wants to increase their knowledge and polish their skills, I will devise a plan to meet your needs. I encourage regular practice and like my students to keep a journal to monitor their progress.

I teach a variety of styles including classical guitar, blues, rock, jazz, and avant-garde.

Ultimately, I believe everyone needs a creative outlet, a way to express themselves, and has something unique to say, and I aim to help those students find their own voice.

Dave has been able to take me on a great journey! We have covered many kinds of music, and I'm greatly appreciative of his patience and encouragement. He was able to tell after just a couple of lessons that my original plans for getting lessons was never going to be enough. He introduced several topics, and whetted my appetite for more! I'm a self taught guitarist who has been playing for nearly 20 years. I have played professionally in numerous bands and ensembles ranging from jazz to folk to rock, and I've been writing music for the same length of time. I currently perform with one of my students from TakeLessons named Mackenzie O'Brien.

I graduated from Columbia College Chicago in May 2014 with a BA in Music Composition. I studied under composers: Drew Baker, Kenn Kumpf, Ilya Levinson, and Marcos Balter. I've performed and worked with members from the groups, Del Niente and Chicago's Composer's Collective.

I build my lesson plans around each of my students based on their interests. I'll try to incorporate music they enjoy into their music regime. I keep lessons pretty relaxed, but will challenge a student who is looking for something m

I'm an "older" adult who wants to learn to play the ukulele. I have very little experience in reading or playing music. Jeremie was super in starting from my point of comfort. I'm very pleased with my 1st lesson and looking forward to more lessons.

For a first lesson, I was impressed and very excited to begin playing the guitar. The lesson started with Jeremie understanding what I already knew and then going forward from there instead of going over things that I already knew. For about five years now, I have been actually completing playable music. The past couple years, my school's jazz combo has even taken a couple of my songs to compete with at local jazz festivals. I have studied primarily under the fantastic composer, guitarist and teacher, Tom Hynes the past couple years. Prior to my studies, I was self taught, as a way of expanding my improvisation. I write primarily for Chamber ensembles, Jazz small ensembles, and even some pop music. I use Handwritten, Finale and Logic pro for notation, so whichever is most convenient, I'll use. In lessons, I will ask students to bring in material they have written each week, which we will review together. I'll add some suggestions, but will not change the integrity of the music, just refine it. We shall look at composing in different styles, as well as expanding upon the styles in which the student is most interesting in pursuing.
